THOMASVILLE ARMORY, Thomasville, Ga., May 16, 2012 – The Thomasville Military Family
Assistance Center, operated by family assistance specialist, Melissa Dalton, hosted the Thomas County Family Connection Collaborative meeting on March 20 at the Georgia Army Guard’s 1230th Transportation Company armory.
Here, Staff Sgt. Edward Stone, noncommissioned officer-in-charge of the unit’s readiness, talks with visitors about the tactical trucks the 1230th uses for moving the fuel, food parts and personnel that keep it and the units it serves mission capable.
More than 50 members from various organizations around Thomasville and Thomas County were
present for the meeting. Among them were Kathy Megahee, Thomas County Family Connection
coordinator; Michelle Collins, Family Connection vice chair and volunteer coordinator at Archbold
Memorial Hospital; Rebecca Cannady-United Way director; Debbie Reynolds-representing Sen.
Saxby Chambliss; Ray Auman Sr., district attorney for the Southern Judicial Circuit; Almeda Simpson, AMH Assistant vice president for community and clinical outreach; Lester Hayes, Veterans Service representative and a host of other area dignitaries. During the event, Dalton gave a presentation illustrating the connection between the Georgia National Guard and the community, and identified the family assistance center as a liaison between military families and the community regarding information and resources. Representing the 1230th, besides Stone, were Staff Sgt. John Meredith- the unit supply NCO; and Staff Sgt. Diana Meredith, training NCO.

Georgia National Guard ADT III team member, Sgt. Christopher Ellis, tasted raw honey from a beehive during technician Jennifer Berry's demonstration on basic apiculture. Learning about bee keeping, greenhouses, soil preparation, dairy cattle, and other farming techniques may seem out of the ordinary for a military mission to Afghanistan, but not for the Georgia National Guard’s Agribusiness Development Team III. Guardsmen from the 201st Regional Support Group attended a weeklong training course at the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Ga. hosted by the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

CLAY NATIONAL GUARD CENTER, Marietta, Ga., Dec. 06, 2012 – Soldiers from the 78th Homeland Response Force contribute first hand to the usability study of the new Midazolam Auto-Injector Advanced Anti-convulsion System (AAS). This system has been selected to replace the Convulsive Antidote for Nerve Agent (CANA). The new auto-injector is expected to enter the force by 2014.

Colonel Michael Scholes Sr., who commands Marietta’s 78th Homeland Response Force, acknowledges the safe return of Kennesaw’s 277th Maintenance Company from a year in Afghanistan under the command of Capt. Anna Smith.
Clay National Guard Center, April 5, 2011 – Capt. William Parker, the new Security Force Planner with the Georgia Army National Guard’s 78th Homeland Response Force, works on operational plans in preparation for an upcoming training mission.
“My primary responsibility is to provide the operational planning for the 1st of the 214th Field Artillery Battalion.”
The 214th is the first responder in a nuclear disaster. They oversee all security and logistical functions for the Georgia Guard’s Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and high-yield Explosive Response Force Package, also known as the JTF 781 CERFP.
“My soldiers in the 1-214th provide Command and Control for any and all CERFPs to assist in Decontamination of any contaminated victims in the event of a nuclear disaster,” said Capt. Parker.

Four-year-old Shannon Filkins of Glennville says ‘hello’ to his dad Spc. Gary Filkins, an all-wheeled mechanic for the 277th Maintenance Company. It is the first time the two have seen each other since the 277th deployed to Afghanistan one year ago.
Soldiers of Douglas’ 848th Engineer Company, the search and extraction element of Georgia’s Joint Task Force 781 and CBRNE Enhanced Response Force Package (CERFP), see to the needs of an “earthquake victim,” while other “victims” line up for the walk to nearby "medical assistance."
The simulation is part of Operation Vigilant Guard. Operation Vigilant Guard 2011 is a multi-state exercise designed with the improvement of interagency cooperation in mind. It provides an opportunity for State National Guard headquarters, State joint task forces – like the 781st and its elements – to improve command and control, and operational relationships with local, state and federal emergency responders.

Staff Sgt. Christopher Hill and Spc. Kerry Thompson, both with Georgia’s 78th Homeland Response Force, help Staff Sgt.
