Two giraffes by Kathyrn Wiegers in Rutland, Vermont.

Storefront for the New Kong Chow Fusion restaurant on Center Street in Rutland, Vermont.

Someone has a photo from 2008 before the restaurant was new and fusion. They mention that it was reviewed in the New Yorker in 1939.

"Wise Man" by Kathyrn Wiegers on Wales Street in Rutland, Vermont. Wiegers also painted the Vermont farm scene and the "Batman vs. Griffin" murals (and more, stay tuned!) in Rutland.

Two ghost signs on a building in Rutland, Vermont. The Oakman Electric Supply ghost was partially covered by another plywood sign for Turner Motors in the 2012 Street View.

One of the newest sculptures in the Rutland Sculpture Trail is this bust of Martin Henry Freeman. The sculpture was designed by Mark Burnett and carved by Don Ramey.

Freeman was born in Rutland, graduated from Middlebury College in 1849 as salutatorian. After graduation he became a junior professor at the Allegheny Institute (later Avery College), an all-Black school in Pittsburgh. He was named president of the school in 1856, becoming the first Black American to head a college. In 1864 he moved to Liberia to become a professor of mathematics at Liberia College and became president of that college in 1868. Freeman died in 1889.

An admittedly not great photo of Seward's in Rutland, Vermont. Look at all those glass bricks!

English author Rudyard Kipling married wealthy American Caroline Starr Balestier in 1892. They planned an around-the-world trip for their honeymoon but Kipling's bank failed. Instead they moved to Vermont. First to the Balestier home in Brattleboro and then to the house they had built in nearby Dummerston called NaulakhaIt. It was in Vermont that Rudyard wrote The Jungle Book.

This sculpture, which sits on a large marble pedestal (but that photo turned out crappy) is by local sculptor Sean Hunter Williams.

2 months later and still the people of Southern Vermont are reeling from the loss of homes and businesses. Families are homeless, many hopeless and not rebuilding. Homes and land for sale. Some just say "make an offer".

My Cousin Cheryl, at home, at age two

and me a couple of months younger..

After I posted this photo, my niece out in eastern Long Island emailed me that a whole photo album just turned up of Cheryl and me at a beach. We each were first-born in our families so we are in lots of photos.

Rutland is the urban center of Vermont's marble industry. The Vermont Marble Company had 4,000 employees in the late 1800s. This sculpture in Center Street Marketplace Park was designed by Kellie Pereira and carved by Stephen Shaheen, Alessandro Lombardo and Andrea Ingrassi.
