DOWNTOWN PRESENCE

Artist: Monte Wright

Location: Market Lane entrance to the Kitchener Market, 300 King Street East

Medium: Mixed media mural

This mural uses a colour palette that resonates with strength, honour and humble caring feelings. The story told through the piece leads the viewer’s eyes to the centre and back out to the other side of the mural. The movement allows for every element to be showcased in its own unique way.

On April 26, 2022 German, pioneering electronic musician, Klaus Schulze passed away. Schulze was the great "granddaddy" of the German Electronic scene that burgeoned forth in the late 60's and came to full fruition in the mid to late 70's. He was a great inspiration to his fellow Germans but he achieved world-wide recognition as well. Many of the later generation of electronic musicians cited him as their greatest influence.

Klause Schulze belonged to what became known as the "Berlin School" of electronic music. He worked with many famous people over his long career, such as Arthur Brown, Lisa Gerrard, Steve Winwood, Manuel Gottsching and Edgar Froese. His music is very classically oriented but almost always features some form of percussion as well, since Schulze started out his career as a drummer for Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel.

He was 72 when he passed away. He had been fighting a long term but undisclosed illness for some time before he succumbed to it. In his life he released over 100 albums, some of the best of which are: "Mirage", "Kontinuum", "Moonlake", "Live@Klangart", "Vielen Dank" and "X". His music is often on when I create and has been a lifelong inspiration to me.

Tangerine Dream are a German electronic music band founded in 1967 by Edgar Froese.

Tangerine Dream are considered a pioneering act in electronica. Their work with the electronic music Ohr label produced albums that had a pivotal role in the development of the German musical scene known as kosmische Musik ("cosmic music").

Delonix regia is a species of flowering plant in the bean family Fabaceae, subfamily Caesalpinioideae native to Madagascar. It is noted for its fern-like leaves and flamboyant display of orange-red flowers over summer. In many tropical parts of the world it is grown as an ornamental tree and in English it is given the name royal poinciana, flamboyant, phoenix flower, flame of the forest, or flame tree (one of several species given this name).

Water is a polar inorganic compound that is at room temperature a tasteless and odourless liquid, which is nearly colourless apart from an inherent hint of blue. It is by far the most studied chemical compound and is described as the "universal solvent" and the "solvent of life." It is the most abundant substance on the surface of Earth and the only common substance to exist as a solid, liquid, and gas on Earth's surface. It is also the third most abundant molecule in the universe behind molecular hydrogen and carbon monoxide.

The properties of water have historically been used to define various temperature scales. Notably, the Kelvin, Celsius, Rankine, and Fahrenheit scales were, or currently are, defined by the freezing and boiling points of water.

Drinking water, also known as potable water, is water that is safe to drink or use for food preparation. The amount of drinking water required to maintain good health varies, and depends on physical activity level, age, health-related issues, and environmental conditions. For those who work in a hot climate, up to 16 litres a day may be required. Typically in developed countries, tap water meets drinking water quality standards, even though only a small proportion is actually consumed or used in food preparation. Other typical uses for tap water include washing, toilets, and irrigation.

Globally, by 2015, 89% of people had access to water from a source that is suitable for drinking – called improved water source. In sub-Saharan Africa, access to potable water ranged from 40% to 80% of the population. Nearly 4.2 billion people worldwide had access to tap water, while another 2.4 billion had access to wells or public taps. The World Health Organization considers access to safe drinking-water a basic human right.

About 1 to 2 billion people lack safe drinking water. More people die from unsafe water than from war, then-U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in 2010. Third world countries are most affected by lack of water, flooding, and water quality. Up to 80 percent of illnesses in developing countries are the direct result of inadequate water and sanitation. Water covers approximately 70% of the Earth's surface, where approximately 97.2% of it is saline, only 2.8% fresh. Source Wikipedia.

It is alway interesting to read an autobiography about someone who has influenced you! In this case…it is Edgar Froese! His music…is scripture to my ears! To listen to Tangerine Dream is to be transported to that other place…a wilderness within…where chaos and understanding meet…a desert within…a mystical state.

Summer Painting Project 2021.

Acrylic on Canvas. 12" x 12".

A friend of mine once gave me a few albums in payment for some artwork I did for him One of those albums was Tangerine Dream's "Phaedra". It was a revelation to me. Non-rhythmic, free-flowing music without the formal structures of Rock, yet it was wildly experimental for its time. Inside the original vinyl album were a series of blue paintings by Edgar Froese that were all in blues and quite striking.

I was listening to Tangerine Dream when I was painting this and immediately thought of Froese's pieces. Their music is often on when I'm painting.

***** I want to thank Paul Ewing, Bramdass, Miranda Murray, Tim Noonan and Bill Smith for their continuous support and encouragement to get these things posted to Flickr.

Buildings in Black & White .

I have taken this building as I think it should look good in B&W , I have taken a few shots of the structure before , but not from this angle . I have know this building all my life and always thought it had a rather sombre , dominating and menacing feel to it and maybe Dystopian if the word fits . At the time I took this the sun was shining through the bare trees nearby casting some intriguing shadows on the walls .

Built in 1935 it has an Art Deco feel to the structure , and looking at the size of all the windows and the skylights that are in there , it should be full of light though . It has been known to be flooded with water on occasion in the past when the close by River Mole has been in flood !!

The first public water supply in Leatherhead was created in 1884, when a stream-driven pumping station was constructed in Waterways Road. The works, designed by John William Grover, were capable of lifting 90,000 litres (20,000 imp gal) per hour to a reservoir on Reigate Road. A second diesel-powered station was constructed alongside the first in 1935 and was later converted to electric power. The steam-powered works were demolished in 1992.

The Leatherhead and District Water Co. had been established in 1883, when an Act of Parliament was granted which created the company, and authorised them to build wells and a pumping station on land close to the River Mole and the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway, in the parish of Fetcham. This was connected by a pipeline to two service reservoirs, both in Leatherhead, which were used to supply water to Leatherhead, Ashtead, Mickleham, Fetcham, Great Bookham, Little Bookham, Stoke D'Abernon, Church Cobham and Street Cobham, now both part of Cobham. They also drew water from a borehole in Waterway Road, where the original

buildings lasted until 1992, when they were demolished to make way for housing. Leatherhead became the next area to join East Surrey Water, when it was taken over in 1927.

The enabling Act extended East Surrey Water's area of supply to include all of the area then supplied by Leatherhead and District Water, and also included the village of Effingham.

A large pumping station was built in the 1930s, next to the original Waterway Road works, which was equipped with diesel pumps to transfer the water to the new Elmer Works on Hawks Hill. Diesel engines were subsequently replaced by electric motors. Elmer Works is labelled a water softening works on the 1935 OS map. The source of water for the Leatherhead pumping station is still a series of ten artesian wells near the millpond at Fetcham. Sutton and East Surrey Water plc was rebranded to SES Water plc in February 2017.

THE GERMAN HERITAGE OF THE KITCHENERWATERLOO REGION

Artist: Gus Froese

Location: Market Lane entrance to the Kitchener Market, 300 King Street East

Medium: Mixed media mural

Constructed as if reading an old newspaper, this piece showcases the German heritage of the City by capturing a couple dancing, and melding both historic and present-day images. The colour palette used is influenced by German culture, with rich earthy tones and aspects showcased in traditional German clothing. The work is encased with a decorative border that lets the piece blend organically onto the market wall.

Based on the album cover for Epsilon in Malaysian Pale by the late Edgar Froese.

Excerpt from www.hamilton.ca/things-do/arts-music/public-art:

Music City Markers (38) by Dave Kuruc: This artwork by Dave Kuruc consists of four 9 metre high x 1 metre wide digital images installed in glass and steel beacon features. Love for the city, traditional wooden type and local music history inspired the art featured in these Gore Park Beacons that highlight words written by musicians and bands who are Hamilton-based (or who once called Hamilton home). Traditional letterpress-printed type is digitally enhanced with bold coloured backgrounds and texture to evoke eye-catching concert posters found in the urban environment. The lyrics connect to the history and significance of Gore Park for Hamiltonians while capturing its ever-changing nature. Like music itself, these pieces invoke reflection, love, anticipation, longing, regret, joy and movement while inspiring a conversation about place, memory, architecture and our city. With letterpress printing by: Sara Froese (All Sorts Press) and Greg Smith (blindpigpress).

Three in B&W .

I don't have a set of three wise monkeys and did not want to post just three items plonked on the oven top studio so I turned to the little grey cells thinking of " three" . First thing to come to mind is a track by Tangerine Dream called " Three Bikes In The Sky " off of the Melrose Album . Well this piece of music now firmly in my head , this is what my SSC shot is going to have to be . Therefore ,on a quick walk down to the local Sainsburys with camera at the ready a backdrop was soon captured along with in no time a passing cyclist . A brief visit to Serif Craft Artist and job done .

Melrose is the thirty-ninth major release and twentieth studio album by Tangerine Dream. This album was released in 1990 on the Private Music label founded by former Tangerine Dream member, Peter Baumann. The album further developed the instrumental pop style known from the previous two Private Music albums, Optical Race and Lily on the Beach. Edgar Froese's son, Jerome, for the first time appears on a Tangerine Dream album as a full-time member. This was Paul Haslinger's last album with Tangerine Dream .

Well I do not know where this image come from other than blue and orange - or tangerine ! The Dali style is maybe a nod to the early days of Edgar Froese founder of Tangerine Dream who had close links to Salvidor Dali .

So off to the shops for some Tangerines but there were not any available so for purposes of the shot Clementines will have to do . Well the strange idea just grew quickly and well here it is . There is even a nod to the Beatles and " Lucy in the Sky " which as you can read is where the group conjured up the name " Tangerine Dream " .

With a name like that, you'd think Edgar Froese had either literally woken up in a citrus trance and feverishly scribbled the words in his dream journal, or that he was being deliberately colourful, to try and approximate a psychedelic reverie. However, the slightly more boring truth is that he misunderstood the lyrics to the Beatles song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (which is, to be fair, exactly that kind of trippy vision).

As English is not his first language, he thought John Lennon's "tangerine trees" was "tangerine dream", and named his band in homage. Mind you, he wasn't the first to make such a lyrical mistake. The Mystery Trend took their name from the "Mystery Tramp" in Bob Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone, and The Lightning Seeds got their name from Prince's Raspberry Beret: "The thunder drowns out what the lightning sees."

Edgar Willmar Froese (6 June 1944 – 20 January 2015) was a German artist and electronic music pioneer, best known for founding the electronic music group Tangerine Dream. Although his solo and group recordings prior to 2003 name him as "Edgar Froese", his solo albums from 2003 onwards bear the name "Edgar W. Froese".

Froese was born in Tilsit, East Prussia, on D-Day during World War II; members of his family, including his father, had been killed by the Nazis and his mother and surviving family settled in West Berlin after the war. He took piano lessons from the age of 12, and started playing guitar at 15. After showing an early aptitude for art, Froese enrolled at the Academy of the Arts in West Berlin to study painting and sculpture.

In 1965, he formed a band called The Ones, who played psychedelic rock, and some rock and R&B standards. While playing in Spain, The Ones were invited to perform at Salvador Dalí's villa in Cadaqués. Froese's encounter with Dalí was highly influential, inspiring him to pursue more experimental directions with his music. The Ones disbanded in 1967, having released only one single ("Lady Greengrass" / "Love of Mine"). After returning to Berlin, Froese began recruiting musicians for the free-rock band that would become Tangerine Dream.

So to the music - how do you choose from a discography of over 150 albums and soundtracks ?? Just pick a couple of random favourites I suppose ---

Edgar Froese - Aqua

Florian Froese-Peeck, Buddy, 2011

Joshua Tree National Park, California

Found in the crypt area of Winchester Cathedral this is an Anthony Gormley statue. In the wetter months this area is usually flooded to a depth that you can see as marked on the walls. When there is water there it is pumped into the cupped hands and overflows back into the body of water. The statue has the head looking at it's hands as if deep in thought watching it flow. As you can see , unfortunately this was a dry time so we missed out on the full effect.

youtu.be/jNWF50faO0s

Although there is no water here at the moment , the whole concept of this statue in this setting revolves around the still water around the base of the statue and the flowing water from the cupped hands, therefore I have chosen music by Edgar Froese. This album was recorded by a then new technique that meant it was intended to be listened to on cans ( headphones ) , this I did do only to end up with hallucinations on track three - Must admit a Bacardi or two was involved . I can still picture exactly what I saw at the time. Oh , name of the album -- AQUA .

8.I love reading Harry Potter books to my daughter.

9.I’m fascinated by the mediaeval.

I sadly learned today that Edgar Froese the founder and creative genius behind the band Tangerine Dream had passed away. Most of you have probably never heard of this group or its music, but you really have. Edgar Froses and Tangerine Dream have provided the soundtrack for countless films for over thirty years.

I first fell in love with this band in college when my roommate was playing the LP “Rubycon”. Atmospheric, dark, other worldly, those are just a few of the adjectives that describe their music. In later years their sound would become a bit more mainstream and laid the way for many of the current “trance” bands and performers.

Thankfully this has been a prolific band and they produced many, many, exceptional LPs and CDs. Their music may not be for everyone, but it has been the soundtrack for my life since the early 1970’s.

I dreamed of one day seeing them in concert. That will never happen now. “The dream is always the same”.

Old Edgar will be spinning in his box.

The galaxy NGC 891...another quick and easy target because we weren't sure what the weather was going to do and we had a full Moon and stronger than usual winds to contend with. After a cloudy evening, the night sky became beautifully clear and NGC 891 was well situated for imaging. The shot was framed in such a way as to show some of the other galaxies that are part of the Virgo Supercluster (I counted 27 in the image but there are probably more). Astrometry.net identified only a few of them. Those identified are, from left to right: NGC 914, NGC 913, NGC 911, NGC 912, NGC 910, NGC 909, NGC 906, NGC 898. Their approximate distances from us range from between 200 million to 250 million light-years.

[From Wikipedia] NGC 891 (also known as Caldwell 23, the Silver Sliver Galaxy, and the Outer Limits Galaxy) is an edge-on unbarred spiral galaxy about 30 million light-years away in the constellation Andromeda. The galaxy is a member of the NGC 1023 group of galaxies in the Local Supercluster. NGC 891 looks as the Milky Way would look like when viewed edge-on (some astronomers have even noted how similar to NGC 891 our galaxy looks as seen from the Southern Hemisphere) and, in fact, both galaxies are considered very similar in terms of luminosity and size.

NGC 891 pops up from time to time in popular culture: it appears in the end credits of the Outer Limits TV series, which is why it is occasionally called the Outer Limits Galaxy; in the soundtrack of the 1974 film, Dark Star by John Carpenter, there is a muzak-style instrumental piece called "When Twilight Falls on NGC 891"; and there is a track called NGC 891 on the album Aqua by Edgar Froese.

Walking down the winding path

I hold tight to Daddy's hand

His firm but gentle grip makes me

Feel safe like nothing else can

I don't know where we are going

But my Daddy knows the way

He leads us down the path that's right

And will not let us stray

I hold on to his hand tightly

I know he won't let me fall

For my Daddy is the biggest and the strongest of them all

I don't ever have to worry

When I hold his hand in mine

Because I know he will protect

And love me for all time.

History / Wikapedia

The settlement, known from about 1781 as Butlersburg, in honour of Colonel John Butler, the commander of Butler's Rangers, was renamed West Niagara to distinguish it from Fort Niagara.[4] It was a British military base and haven for pro-British loyalists fleeing the United States during the volatile aftermath of the American Revolution.[5] Renamed Newark by Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe in 1792, he made it the first capital of Upper Canada (now the province of Ontario), The first provincial parliament was convened at the Navy Hall on September 17, 1792.[5] Due to Newark's close proximity to the American border, Simcoe moved the capital in 1797 to York and Newark was officially renamed 'Niagara' in 1798.[4]

Niagara played a central role in the War of 1812. Niagara was taken by American forces after a two day bombardment by cannons from Fort Niagara and the American Fleet, followed by a fierce battle. Later in the war the town was razed and burnt to the ground by American soldiers as they withdrew to Fort Niagara. Undaunted by this setback, often referred to as the "burning of Newark," the citizens rebuilt the town after the war, with the residential quarter around Queen Street and toward King Street, where the new Court House was rebuilt out of firing range of the cannons of Fort Niagara.[5] In 1859 the town built its first public school, Niagara Public School.[6]

The town's present name was adopted around 1880 as a Postal Address to distinguish the town from Niagara Falls. The name was not officially adopted until 1970, when the Town of Niagara and the Township of Niagara were merged.[5]

Historic sites[edit]

Most of the former military sites, such as Fort George, Navy Hall, and Butler's Barracks, have been restored. Fort George's restoration was done as a "Make Work Project", guided by plans from the Royal Engineers, during the Great Depression of the 1930s, an early example of historic preservation. Fort George National Historic Site is a focal point in a collection of War of 1812 sites which, collectively, are managed by Parks Canada under the name Niagara National Historic Sites. That administrative name includes several national historic sites: Fort Mississauga, Mississauga Point Lighthouse (1804, the first on the Great Lakes), Navy Hall, Butler's Barracks, and Queenston Heights.

A map of the National Historic District.

Cenotaph and clock tower.

Niagara-on-the-Lake teems with historical plaques, many national and provincial, reflecting its significance in the establishment of many of the province's institutions. Among these were its first newspaper, lending library, parliament, historical museum, and governing body for the legal profession. Critical battles in the defence of Upper Canada took place here, at Queenston, including one in which heroine Laura Secord gained her fame. The town gave many black Americans their first taste of freedom, both as a stop on the Underground railroad for those travelling further into Upper Canada, and as a refuge in its own right. Its stock of Regency and Classical Revival buildings, considered the best in the country from the post-war of 1812 period, led the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada to recommend that the town's historic district be designated a National Historic Site of Canada, a designation which was approved in 2003.[7][8] The historic centre had already been designated as a provincial Heritage Conservation District under the Ontario Heritage Act in 1986. And, although it did not make the final list, the Historic District was considered for nomination as a World Heritage Site.[9]

Other significant sites in NOTL:

The town contains other National Historic Sites of Canada within its boundaries: the Battlefield of Fort George[10] and nearby Fort George,[11] Butler's Barracks,[12] Fort Drummond,[13] Fort Mississauga,[14] the site of the Mississauga Point Lighthouse,[15] the Niagara Apothecary (the oldest apothecary in Canada),[16] the Niagara District Court House,[17] Queenston Heights,[18][19] Queenston-Chippawa Hydro-electric Plant,[20][21] Willowbank[22][23] and Vrooman's Battery.[24]

McFarland House, built ca. 1800, is the oldest surviving building in Niagara-on-the-Lake. During the War of 1812 the house was used as both a hospital and Officer's Quarters, therefore it survived the Burning on Newark in December 1813. It is now open to the public for guided tours, as well as a tea patio and mini cafe.

Politics[edit]

Niagara-on-the-Lake is located within the federal electoral district of Niagara Falls, currently represented in the Canadian House of Commons by Rob Nicholson, and the provincial electoral district of Niagara Falls, currently represented in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario by Wayne Gates.

It is the only municipality in Canada whose elected leader is designated as Lord Mayor, a title more common in the United Kingdom.[3] Popular legend suggests that Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn bestowed the title on the mayor of Niagara during a visit to the town in the early 1800s, in recognition of the town's history as the first capital of Upper Canada;[3] however, there is no historical record of a mayor actually using it until Jerry Mussen in the early 1920s, and even after him the title was used only irregularly until the Regional Municipality of Niagara Act of 1969 officially legislated that "The mayor of the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake shall be known as the Lord Mayor."[3] The town's current Lord Mayor is Dave Eke, who was first elected in the 2010 municipal election; previous Lord Mayors have included Gary Burroughs, Art Viola, Mike Dietsch, Stan Ignatczyk, Jim Marino, Wilbert Dick, Jake Froese and Fred Goring.[3]

'Tangerine Dream' is a band that was formed in 1967 by Edgar Froese. He remained the leader and the only member to be in every incarnation of the group, who are renowned for their genre-leading electronic music and frequent changes of members, with each bringing a different shade to the overall sound. His untimely death in January 2015 was not the end of the band, though, and it continues to produce wonderful music along lines that he would surely have loved. The band, seen here at the Barbican Centre in London on 13 March 2019, now comprises (from left to right) Thorsten Quaeschning, Hoshiko Wamane and Ulrich Schnauss.

Epic album soundtrack composed by Tangerine Dream!! - Mike

*****

"Thief is a 1981 neo-noir film written and directed by Michael Mann and based on the 1975 novel The Home Invaders: Confessions of a Cat Burglar by 'Frank Hohimer' (the pen name of real-life jewel thief John Seybold). The film stars James Caan as the titular thief.

...Mann has gained a reputation as a director on the cutting-edge when it comes to the music for his films. Thief's moody soundscapes were composed and performed by Tangerine Dream, providing the first of many notable film compositions they had in the 1980s."

"Tangerine Dream is a German electronic music group founded in 1967 by Edgar Froese. The band has undergone many personnel changes over the years, with Froese being the only continuous member. Drummer and composer Klaus Schulze was briefly a member of an early lineup, but the most stable version of the group, during their influential mid-1970s period, was as a keyboard trio with Froese, Christopher Franke, and Peter Baumann. Early in the 1980s, Johannes Schmoelling replaced Baumann, and this lineup, too, was stable and extremely productive.

Tangerine Dream's early 'Pink Years' albums had a pivotal role in the development of Krautrock. Their 'Virgin Years' and later albums became a defining influence in the genre known as New Age music, although the band themselves disliked the term.

Although the group has released numerous studio and live recordings, a substantial number of their fans were introduced to Tangerine Dream by their film soundtracks, which total over sixty and include Sorcerer, Thief, The Keep, Risky Business, Firestarter, Legend, Near Dark, Shy People, and Miracle Mile." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tangerine_Dream
