From Wigton looking towards the solway and Criffel (scotland)

With nothing else about today, this was the main target as it's a once a week working. 70813 has just passed through Wigton heading north with the 6S48 Workington-Aberdeen china clays formed of the usual short consist.

A 9 hour trip this morning on the train just for this shot, which was a total gamble considering the weather wasn't guaranteed and the train wasn't updating properly on RTT, plus this is normally a Thursdays only diagram. Here is a frozen 70801 hammering away from Wigton with 6s48 Workington Docks (Ccc)-Aberdeen Craiginches T.C.

70806 heads north away from Wigton with the Thursday's only China clays from Workington-Aberdeen. I was hoping for one of the 56/66 that were up at Carlisle however it wasn't to be on this occasion. Still, the light was so nice that I couldn't pass up the opportunity given the decent load.

Some winter sunshine after days of grey gloom and rain were a welcome relief so I couldn't pass up this opportunity during the 10min wait for the section to clear through to Maryport.

The old bay platform still sees use for occasional berthing of tamping machines but was once the starting point for trains on the Mealsgate loop. Alas that line was an early casualty closing at the eastern end from 1921 and only being retained as a branch to Mealsgate from the Aspatria end before that to closed in 1952.

House Sparrow, Wigton, Cumbria

I was blessed this week with a visit from my former neighbour, flat-mate and long time great chum Eddie, a.k.a "Stapleton Road" who was up from Devon.

After his arrival on Thursday evening a plan was formulated for the following day.

That plan was for Ed to get some shots of the loco-hauleds and anything else that might be going on whilst I was happy to act as guide and chauffeur in order to facilitate it and perhaps get a snap or two myself if possible.

Unfortunately the weather forecast for the Friday was no great shakes and we were pleasantly surprised when we awoke to a bit of sun.

Plan was; do the first northbound at Wigton and then head for Dalston to do the tanks.

Here we see 37403 rolling past Wigton 'box on approach to the station with the 05.46 BIF - CAR.
