Type: Fairey Firefly AS.5
Operator: Royal Australian Navy
Rego: WB518 / 903 / K
Serial: F8646
Location: Tourist Information and Visitor Centre. Griffith, NSW Australia
Date: 10/12/2023
Notes: The aircraft was originally delivered to the Royal Australian Navy as an AS.5 version and flown from the carrier HMAS Sydney. It was later converted to a TT.18 Target Tug aircraft and then after retirement in the early 1960's was obtained by the Griffith RSL and mounted on a pole in the carpark of what is now the Griffith Tourist Information Centre in late 1967. In 1991 thee aircraft was taken down for a short time with its front section being taken and grafted onto aircraft WD828 (VH-HMW) a flying example that had been damaged. The front of WD828 was then grafted onto WB518 with cosmetic repairs and the aircraft was returned to its pole in Griffith where it remains today. The prop dose move in the wind and a manikin is in the pilots' seat for display.

WB518, a Fairey Firefly AS.Mk 6, built in 1950 was originally delivered to the Royal Australian Navy. The Firefly entered service with 817 Squadron (it later served with 816 Squadron) and saw action during the Korean War when it flew from the deck of HMAS Sydney. Its service career over, the aircraft was retired and displayed on a pole in the town of Griffith, New South Wales as a war memorial.

Fairey Firefly WB518 was one of the first ten MK VI s built but still retains the earlier fuselage of the MK V. The aircraft was originally delivered to 817 Squadron. 817 Squadron then exchanged their aircraft for those of 816 Squadron for duty in Korea. The aircraft has been painted to represent WB377 which was loaned to 817 Squadron aboard HMAS Sydney by the Royal Navy for duty in Korea. The Australians had damaged most of their original aircraft in accidents. WB377 '201' in the commanding officer's colors was no exception being damaged in Typhoon Ruth in October of 1951. The wartime guise of 201 was chosen not only for aesthetics, but because it had most of the representative equipment of the period i.e. rocket rails, drop tanks, etc...
After being flown on the US airshow circuit for a decade, WB518 was damaged in a landing accident in 2012 due to a parts failure on the landing gear. The Firefly was returned to Q.G. Aviation in Colorado who completed the re-restoration in 2019. WB518 made a triumphant public return at Oshkosh 2019.
This aircraft is for sale, I think. When I heard this I got real excited and ran to my bank. I was so disappointed when I picked up my bank and shook it. I forgot that I had cashed in my coins recently. Anyway, I did not check to see what they are asking for this beauty, but probably more than 27 dollars and 13 cents. Maybe I can buy a plastic model kit.

1637. There seems to have been dozens of crash pictures like this from the service days of HMAS SYDNEY [III], Australia's first true aircraft carrier.
See pics NO. 1182 here for example:

Or Pic NO. 249 here:

Really, the choices are wonderful, and these are but two of dozens one could go to.
In 2010 - almost half a century later - the aircraft shown above was scheduled to start flying again as a restored 'warbird' in the United States. This would have made it one of two Fireflies off HMAS SYDNEY [III] doing the US air show circuits, where restored Sea Furies have also proved popular.
The aircraft shown crashed here, serial NO. WD840, was delivered to SYDNEY at Glasgow's King George V docks on Oct 16, 1952, and served with 817, 816 and later 851 squadrons.
In this accident, Kim Dunstan, ex-FAA, tells us in 'comments, she was piloted by Slt. J.A. Bolton. Some time after the mishap she was converted to a target tow, and used in this role as Sea Venom jets came into service.
On July 8, 1966 the plane was sold to Aircraft Engines Overhaul and Service of Peakhurst NSW [for $627, with other parts thrown in], who in turn sold it on to Mr Bob Diemert, an enthusiast in Manitoba, Canada.
Shipped via Vancouver, the plane arrived however without its engine and with many almost equally essential parts missing. Mr Diemert nonetheless managed to convert it to a seven-seater, and it was registered for flying operations again when sold to Mr Gene Fisher's Confederate Air Force, which began the work of restoring it to a Firefly Mk6 configuration again, rather than a small passenger plane.
At this stage it was sold again to Don Knapp of Abilene Texas, but after Mr Knapp was sadly killed in an Air Show accident the plane was moved to the Lone Star Museum in Galveston, Texas, and stripped of some parts for the restoration of another Firefly, Captain Eddie Kurdziel's WB518 [see next photo].
Stuart Ellis of of Airplane Services in Jay, Florida then acquired WD880, but the engine was damaged when the truck hauling it was involved in a highway accident. No further work was done.
Finally, on March 10, 2006, WD840 was sold again to Arm Aviation of Park City Utah, and transported to Heber, Utah, for conversion back to her original Firefly MkV configuration.
In Sept 2009, the plane was transported to Ray Middleton's Q. G. Aviation in Fort Collin, Colorado, for the final phase of its restoration and flight tests. Middleton's QG company is the one that also completed Captain Kurdzial's WB518 and got it flying.
The expectation back then was that the plane that once served in Korea and belly flopped down the flight deck of HMAS SYDNEY [III] would soon be taking to Mormon skies, on a wing and prayer, and amazing everyone: However, we have subsequently received even further information from Photostream commentator Les Roberts: Les says: 'Sorry to disappoint...but Aeroplane Monthly.com reports that Fairey Firefly AS.6 WD840 has been sold by Las Vegas, Nevada, USA-based Platinum Fighter Sales to a new owner in Europe. The ex-Royal Australian Navy machine is currently under restoration at QG Aviation in Fort Collins, Colorado.'
