Just playing around in Topaz Studio - this photo was taken on a road trip along the Washington coast.

Thanks so much to all my Flickr friends for their continuing support, encouragement, and inspiration!

Sunset Afterglow, Pacific Beach, Washington

This photo was taken the second day of my Washington coast trip, on an evening which featured a beautiful sunset and an even more striking afterglow that went on and on and on as the sky seemed loathe to surrender its ever-changing colors to the darkness of night.

I stayed down on the beach for awhile after sunset, but it was very windy and after the sun went down, that wind had a chilling bite to it. And since I had not brought gloves to the beach in July (silly me! 😄) my hands were getting numb, so when the colors started to fade I headed back up to the house where I was staying. As I climbed the stairs and trail up the steep hillside however, the sky lit up in shades of purple and orange that had me stopping every minute or two to take 'just a few more' shots.

The one here is from partway up the hill, where the conveniently spaced branches of this tree provided a viewpoint back down to the beach. Most of the sunset watchers had left the shore by then, but one solitary figure lingered down by the water, immersed in the post-sunset glow.

Pacific Beach, Washington

Earlier this month I spent a weekend out on the Washington coast. This area is further south and more developed than the wilderness beaches of Olympic National Park, but is still a beautiful section of beach and coastline, and a much shorter drive from home for me. In the area I was staying, the houses are up on a bluff above the beach (out of the tsunami hazard zone that exists on the low-lying areas of the coast), and there is a steep path leading from there down to the beach.

The trail begins in the trees, but the alluring sound of the ocean is easily heard and the unmistakable scent of saltwater is carried on the breeze. As the path winds its way lower, the trees thin out and the ocean beyond suddenly comes into view. At the sight of it my heart always lifts with joyous anticipation and I want to hurry down the path to reach the sand below. Although I did stop long enough to take a couple of photos of the view through the trees!

[Side note: this area is quite windy and you can see the impact that has on the trees and their branches.]

A pause before turning the corner on a coast backpack. Sometimes it pays off trailing behind.

Hi friends, it's been a while since I've been on flickr and I almost forgot they switched to the new layout. I decided to take a couple weeks off and that turned into almost two months... I've been shooting just not posting. I cant wait to see what everyone has been up to. In the nearly two months off I've totally reworked my processing work flow and wanted to do it without any outside influences and I feel I have got it dialed in. So I guess I've been in a transitional phase you could say.

This is a shot from the Washington coast after a hike out to hole in the rock. I look forward to getting back into the flickr groove and am excited to see what you all have been up to.

Thank you for all your comments and Fav’s

An eerie golden sunset glow caused by the wildfires back in the month of September. I had hoped to capture the red sun that I saw in the sky over Astoria, but as the sun set over the ocean it turned golden. A spooky strange atmosphere at the oceans edge that day!

More from Second Beach

I have driven by these trees may times and always thought they would make a nice photo, except the light was alway harsh. Today was the day, I finally got some fog, and the photo I was wanting!!

I hope you enjoy my newest series of the Cape Disapointment waterscape photos and the king tide waves.

I appreciate all the comments and awards. Be safe and enjoy the experience of photography.

I keep thinking "this is too blue"...but it really did look just like this. Right out of the camera. There are more coming.
