Le pélican est un des oiseaux dont l'origine remonte le plus loin. Ses ancêtres auraient fait leur apparition il y a environ 100 millions d'années, à la fin de l'ère secondaire. Seuls les ordres comprenant aujourd'hui les grèbes, les cigognes et les hérons peuvent se prévaloir d'une origine aussi ancienne. C'est la raison pour laquelle on considère les pélicans comme des oiseaux primitifs, par opposition aux passereaux, par exemple, d'apparition beaucoup plus récente.
La diminution de l'aire de répartition des pélicans a été particulièrement forte en Europe et se poursuit en ce moment. Qu'il s'agisse du pélican blanc ou du pélican frisé, une espèce voisine, ces gros oiseaux sont en effet très farouches et ont absolument besoin, pour installer leurs colonies de nidification, de trouver des espaces à l'abri de toute perturbation. Une forte pression humaine est donc incompatible avec leur maintien.
Actuellement, le pélican blanc, surtout répandu dans les territoires de l'ex-U.R.S.S. (Asie centrale, Russie, Caucase) et en Afrique, est assuré d'un meilleur avenir, mais le pélican frisé est, lui, au bord de l'extinction.

The Church was built in about 1220 as a ‘Chapel of ease’ to Wotten Church for “ye inhabitants or ye outborders of ye parysshes of Wotton, Okley, Abinger, Rydgewyke, Warnham and Ewhurst in ye county of Surrey and Sussex……whiche dwell very ffar distant from ye parryshe churches”.
The original founder of the chapel is not known and the earliest record is dated 1290 and states that Sir Walter de Fancourt presented a priest to the chantry. It was endowed by the gift of land to the value of £200 by Edward de la Hale, a local resident, and a brass is set under the chancel floor recording his death in 1431.

That Ted Kennedy's death was expected and imminent was not in doubt in recent weeks, but it's still very hard to accept that our country's liberal lion is gone. May he rest in peace after his steadfast battles for justice for all Americans and his valiant fight against the accursed disease that took him from us. May we all remember his desire and ability to enlist allies to avoid the kind of bitterness that has overtaken national politics, and may all his colleagues, including those across the aisle, honor his memory with action for the greater good of the people.

My thoughts go out to his family, who have lost their Uncle Teddy.
Gone now all three brothers, who played enormous roles in forging my liberal beliefs. An era is over. I can only hope there will be others who will take up the torch.

Alaskan scientists have identified a unique antifreeze molecule, Xylomannan, in this species in 2009. Unlike other biological antifreeze molecules, which are proteins, this one is the only one consisting of mostly a saccharide and a fatty acid, allowing it to be incorporated into the cell membrane. It prevents ice crystals from forming inside the cells and allows this beetle to survive in -60 degrees C.
