Sigríður from Brattholt

Sigríður Tómasdóttir was born in Brattholt on 24th February 1871 and lived there all her life. She was the second-eldest of the 13 children of Margrét bördandottir, a housewife, and Tomas Tómasson, the farmer in Brattholt. Seven of the children reached adulthood. Sigríður quickly became the leader of the sibling group since her elder sister and only brother left home at an early age. The sisters who remained felt that Sigridur was often rather strict. She was hard working and mainly worked outdoors early in her life

Brattholt stood by a mountain heath, which meant that sheep herding was often difficult, both in spring and autumn, That task fell to the siblings. This led to Sigridur's intimate knowledge of her home country. Sigridur would often take long Trips, both to herd sheep in the mountains and to the town, either walking or on horseback

The Artist and the Guide

Sigridur was artistic and drew and embroidered pictures of flowers and animals. She was a skilled botanist and knew the names of most plants that grew around her home

remote and mainty During that time, Brattholt visited by travellers on their way to Gullfoss. Foreigners who were passing through often bought pictures from Sigridur. She was also good at sewing saddle blankets, a piece of fabric often inserted under a horse's saddle, both for decoration and to protect the tack and riding clothes from dust and horse hait Many of the locals owned a saddle blanket made by Sigridur

Tourists began to frequent Gullfoss around 1875 in Increasing numbers. Prior to that time, the waterfall was hard to reach because of rough terrain and impassable rivers on the way there. Sigridur in Brattholt and her sisters often guided visitors to Gullfoss, making the first trail that led down to the waterfall.

Sigríður í Brattholti

Sigríður Tómasdóttir var fædd i Brattholti 24. febrúar 1871 og bjó þar alla sína ævi. Hún var næstelst af 13 börnum Margrétar Þórðardóttur húsfreyju og Tómasar Tómassonar bónda í Brattholti. Sjö af börnunum komust til fullorðinsára. Sigríður varð fljótlega foringinn i systkinahópnum, þar sem eldri systir hennar og bróðir fluttu snemma að heiman. Systrunum sem eftir voru þótti Sigríður oft á tíðum heldur ströng. Sigríður var víkingur til verka og vann framan af að mestu við útistörf.

Brattholt lá að afrétti og því var fjárgæsla oft erfið, bæði að vori og hausti. Hvildi það starf á systkinunum. Þetta varð til þess að Sigríður þekkti heimahagana vel. Hún fór oft í löng ferðalög, bæði i smalamennskur til fjalla og i kaupstaðarferðir, ýmist gangandi eða á hestum.

Listakonan og leiðsögumaðurinn

Sigriður var listræn og teiknaði og saumaði myndir af blómum og dýrum. Hún var einkar vel að sér i grasafræði og þekkti nöfn á flestum plöntum sem uxu i heimahögum hennar.

Á þessum tíma var Brattholt afskekkt og þangað komu helst ferðalangar á leið að Gullfossi. Útlendingar sem áttu leið þarna um keyptu oft myndir af Sigriði. Hún var lika lagin við að sauma undirdekk, en það er klæði sem oft var lagt milli hests og reiðtygja, bæði til skrauts og til að hlífa reiðverum og reiðfatnaði fyrir hrossamóðu. Margir Tungnamenn áttu undirdekk eftir Sigríði.

Í kringum 1875 fóru ferðamenn í auknum mæli að venja komur sínar að Gullfossi. Fram að þeim tíma var ekki auðvelt að komast að fossinum, enda yfir vegleysur og óbrúaðar ár að fara. Sigríður i Brattholti og systur hennar fylgdu oft gestum að Gullfossi og lögðu þær fyrsta stiginn niður að fossinum.

Oppført i 1930 på Erkegarden på Bjørke av byggherre John Mork og medhjelparar. John Mork vart til dagleg kalla «Bukke-Jo». Han teikna sjølv dette spesielle tømmerhuset, bygd av stokkar henta på Skodje.
