603 is the fourth loco in the South Australian Railway 600 Class. Only three remain in service, all currently owned by Engenco. All three locomotives still wear the colour scheme of former owners, Australian National (despite the locomotives having been transferred first to Australian Southern Railway, then South Spur Rail Services, then Coote Industrials Greentrains division, and now Engenco)

RL302 and 607 stand in the up refuge at Hawkesbury River with a Port Botany bound container freight. Earlier that day, RL306 (pictured to the right of 302) had failed on Cowan Bank, requiring the train to run back down to the refuge, where 306 was detached and placed in the siding to await repairs. As the remaining RL and 600 class did not have the power to lift the load up Cowan Bank, 442s3 and RL304 were requisitioned from a northbound freight to assist, having stowed their train in the loop at Gosford.

8044 and RL302 head up 1443N freight from Cooks River to Kooragang Island. They are nearly at their destination, seen here passing through Warabrook, in suburban Newcastle.

48s33 leads 4816 through East Maitland with a loaded box coal train from the Austar loader at Pelton, on the South Maitland Railway. During 2008, South Spur Rail Services had a short term contract with Mountain Industries to haul coal from the Pelton site to Kooragang Island. Due to the light rail on the branch, T, KL (49) and 48 class units were used on the line for the duration of the contract.

442s2 departs Botany Yard with a container trip train bound for Leightonfield, operated by South Spur Rail Services.

C504 leads 442s6 and C508 through Awaba with 4144 freight from Kooragang Island, bound for Port Botany. At the time, C504 was only recently refurbished in Adelaide. C508 is owned by CFCL Australia and was on lease to South Spur Rail Services at the time. It is currently on long term lease to Southern Shorthaul Railroad.

AF25 a former Commonwealth Railways wooden carriage and used as a lounge car. At the time of the photo it was acquired by South Spur Rail Services for possible use on their dining train. It is seen being moved into the old Midland/ Bellevue CBH silos (now demolished). The carriage minus bogies eventually ended up at the Loopline Railway at Boulder. It is understood that it was passed in at auction earlier this year and is quite dilapidated. Photo taken on 3 July 2007 by Jim Bisdee.

8044, C504 and RL305 work a late running P&O Trans Australia train (1811 to Narromine) upgrade into Auburn. Shortly after P&OTA took over South Spur Rail Services, they began using leased motive power and wagons from Greentrains, as well as their existing fleet of hires from CFCL Australia.

Interestingly the majority of the wagons on this train are NDQF and NQAF types - hired from RailCorp. These wagons are fitted with standard container twist-locks and are normally used with spoil bins for infrastructure trains.

A lot of the old overhead structures in this area have been replaced, along with the overhead wiring. A large signal gantry also dominates this scene with crossovers having been installed for trains to cross from the main to the suburban lines and vice-versa. Re-signalling of the Clyde to Lidcombe corridor has made this a very hard place to shoot today.

442s5 (44223) leads 442s2 (44202) and Cs5 (C506) through Campsie with 1443 empty container flats to Broadmeadow. At the time, both the 442 Class had been repainted into their new owners corporate scheme (Greentrains colours with Coote Industrial logos) whilst Cs5 had not yet been so treated.

Southern & Silverton train 1443 erupts through Enfield behind 872, 869 and RL302. At the time, Southern & Silverton were the NSW division of South Spur Rail Services (themselves owned by Coote Industrial). The locomotives used on this train were owned by Greentrains, a locomotive and wagon leasing subsidiary of Coote Industrial. By the end of the month, South Spur Rail Services would have been sold to burgeoning rail operator P&O Trans Australia (later Qube Logistics).

1443 freight operated from Port Botany to Wash Point on Kooragang Island for Mountain Industries. Mountain Industries was bought out by Asciano and absorbed into the Patricks business in late 2013. Shortly after this change of ownership, haulage of containers between Kooragang Island and Port Botany was changed to Asciano subsidiary Pacific National.

By 2016, the traffic to/from Kooragang Island had dwindled from a thrice weekly train, to being a handful of wagons attached to steel trains running between Newcastle and Sydney, with local shunts at either end. By the end of 2016, this traffic will cease.

New build 1103 (only recently arrived from The USA) rolls into Cowan Station with GL110 and a rake of ballast wagons in tow. It is on transfer from Broadmeadow to Chullora to be weighed, before heading to Adelaide for final checks and commissioning.

1103 is the first in a series of locomotives ordered from NREC by Qube Logistics. Little is known about these 3300hp locomotives yet, as their development has been kept unusually quiet.

RL304 and 442s3 arrive from Gosford light engine, to assist RL302 and 607 up Cowan Bank. Earlier that day, RL306 (out of shot to the right of 302) had failed on Cowan Bank, requiring the train to run back down to the refuge, where 306 was detached and placed in the siding to await repairs. C505 and 442s4 roll through Waratah with a load of new gas pipes bound for North Star. Despite being hauled by Silverton locos and crews, the rolling stock was a mix of Pacific National steel and log wagons.

RL310 and RL304 roar up the steep grade through Cheltenham Station with 1443N freight. 869 and 872 were also dead-attached as part of the load.

Sadly, a rather large cloud had covered the sun, requiring some Photoshop work to minimise the damage. I'm not entirely satisfied with the result, but it's better than the original!

The original of this photo uploaded to Flickr was a significantly wider angle, so I chose a different frame to focus more on the locomotive, to remove distractions.

Again, this was another shot that, at the time, I didn't give a second glance - shot purely for a record when the unit was scrapped. Imagine my surprise to see it overhauled and looking as good as new!
