This wooden bridge connects the two parts of Queens' college in Cambridge. This bridge was built in 1906, replacing an earlier bridge from 1749 (which had seen repairs in 1866). But the later version kept the original design (designed by William Etheridge and built by James Essex the Younger), using straight timber but at the same time creating the allusion of an arch.

The rather unusual design of the bridge has given it its current popular name of the Mathematical Bridge - but as Queens' college themselves point out on their website: 'There is no such thing as an “official name” for the bridge. It has never been named.'

In the 18th century it was known as “Essex’s Bridge”, it was later also known as “Newton’s Bridge” because it was erroneously believed he had designed the it. The bridge was sometimes called the Mathematical Bridge from 1803 onwards - but there was also another Cambridge bridge known by that name. But the bridge is also known as the 'Queens' bridge' - the above mentioned website calls it both the Mathematical and Queens' bridge.

And the flag decorating the bridge is the Transgender Pride Flag.

On a visit to the Isle of Bute in 2019 I stumbled upon the first ever pride march on the island. I imagine it takes a rural island community to use a tractor as transport for a couple of drag queens.

June was chosen as Pride Month because the first pride marches were held in June 1970 to commemorate one year after the Stonewall riots in New York City, USA.

A celebration of LGBTQ pride is needed because people that are LGBTQ have been abused, attacked and persecuted simply for being LGBTQ. Nobody should be persecuted simply for existing as their true selves.

Trans people are at serious risk right now as their rights and existence is under threat from culture war politics and manufactured hate. Much of that hate just recycled from terms and phrases used during the 80s to attack gays and lesbians.

Same sex attractive behaviour has been studied and identified in over 1500 species. Homophobia exists in only one species.

Love is Love.

Trans women are women.

Trans men are men.

Non-binary people are non-binary.

Any hateful, abusive, homophobic and/or transphobic comments will be reported, deleted and you will be blocked.

Spread love, compassion and empathy - not hate.

This was just a quick cellphone shot as I attended the pride flag raising ceremony yesterday at the Rehoboth Beach City Hall.

Thoughts & prayers go out to the families & friends of those affected from the horrific gay nightclub shooting in Orlando Florida this morning.

May this tragic event remind us of the power of hate & that love & compassion will always find a way.

As you scour the internet, you will see some messages of congratulations for the killer of the innocent lives. That is why we still continue Pride marches as a stand against hate & for acceptance & tolerance.

I stand with our community in pain & sorrow.
