His name is Zach Houston, and in addition to running the Poem Store on various street corners around San Francisco, he also just opened a show in a gallery on the other side of The Mission.

Our family stopped to get a poem. He said statistically people wearing crazy hats always want poems. He's typing on an old typewriter.

Here's the poem...

the craziest hat they make is halos

and we all have the same shape of our heads and the approximate number

of eyes finger toes and going home is

so special that pending approval

we will all be given the gracious and

crazies hats available on the drew cards

for who got to wear the jesters

happy face the grandparents

with sarcastically demonic head where

there used to be really nice halo.

from zach houston's poem store in front of SF MOMA.

She sits there at the Arcata market, with a turquoise manual typewriter to match her outfit, waiting for people to commission a poem. I had her write one for Sue. It was quite lovely. And she probably comes out ahead of what poetry magazines would pay her!
