Look no wires! A model of how to build a new tram system in a World Heritage Site city: accessible, reliable and beautiful. At this key historic location, the tram stop is marked only by a slightly raised platform, four stone benches and two litter bins, all aligned symmetrically with the axis of the Place de la Bourse - there is no extraneous clutter here, not even ticket machines!

Architects: Brochet Lajus Pueyo.

Designers: Lanoire & Courrian, Absolut Design.

Landscape designers: Group Signes.

Station and furniture design: Elizabeth de Portzamparc.

Extensive user consultation took place during the planning stage. An underground third rail powers the tram through the historic core of the city and overhead wires are used elsewhere. Planning and design began in 1997. The first phase of two lines, through the city centre, was constructed 2003-2005 for a cost of €686m, and a further line opened in 2009 at a cost of €598.

Though best known as an ancient wine region, Bordeaux France is also a highly-livable city full of splendid 18th century architecture. Here, the trade centre, Place de la Bourse reflects in a splendid reflecting pool between the building and the Gironde river, which bisects the city.

At 130 meter long X 42 meter wide, this set of granite slabs forms the largest reflecting pool in the world. The pond's water cycles from almost dry (looking like a huge slate), then it produces plumes of mist that turn the quay in a fairyland, finally the fog yields to crystal clear water that perfectly reflects "Place de la Bourse", as seen here. Glorious ! @travellingeye

A lady watching the world go by along the quayside of the Garonne River in Bordeaux.

The Quai Louis XVIII and Quai du Mal Lyautey form the link between the city of Bordeaux and the Garonne River.

Restored and resplendent, they are home to walkers, cyclists and rollerbladers gliding along beside the water on wide boulevards.

The buildings of Bordeaux's Place de la Bourse reflected in the Miroir d'Eau as the sun goes down over the city.

The Place de la Bourse is the centuries-old heart of old Bordeaux, with grand buildings linking the riverside with the old city.

The riverside square was renovated in the 18th century by architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel, with the majestic old stock exchange and the Hotel des Fermes flanking the open space around the 1864 Fontaine des Trois-Graces.

In more recent years, the square has seen the city's modern tram network run through its heart, while the Miroir d'Eau, a spectacular flat water feature which intermittently reflects the city and sprays mist in which children of all ages play in, is a popular new attraction busy throughout the day.

What a risky decision, putting the tram stop in the middle of the view. Personally I like it

Vroeg opgestaan voor het mooiste licht en om de meeste toeristen te vermijden die er overdag rondlopen (waaronder ik ^^)

Got up early for the most beautiful light and to avoid most of the tourists who flood the city during the day ( i am one of them ^^)

The sun goes down over the Place de la Bourse in the city of Bordeaux.

It is a port city on the Garonne River in the Gironde department in southwestern France.

The city of Bordeaux, with a population of 242,945 inhabitants, is the ninth largest city in France; its metropolitan area (aire urbaine) is the fifth largest in France, with a population of 1,114,000. It is the capital of the Aquitaine region, as well as the prefecture of the Gironde department. Its inhabitants are called "Bordelais" (for men) or "Bordelaises" (women).

The city's nicknames are "La perle d'Aquitaine", "La Belle Endormie" (Sleeping Beauty) in reference to the old center which had black walls due to pollution. Nowadays, this is not the case. In fact, a part of the city, Le Port de La Lune, was almost completely renovated.

Bordeaux is the world's major wine industry capital. It is home to the world's main wine fair, Vinexpo, while the wine economy in the metro area takes in 14.5 billion euros each year. Bordeaux wine has been produced in the region since the 8th century. The historic part of the city is on the UNESCO World Heritage List as "an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble" of the 18th century.

The former Stock Exchange Hall is now Bordeaux’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry. La Place de la Bourse is a fine example of French classical architecture. On the façade mascarons of these buildings you can observe Neptune opening the city’s commerce; Mercury favouring this commerce; Minerva protecting the arts; the allegory of Time discovering Truth; the Garonne-Dordogne junction; and African women’s faces in reference to the slave trade that brought wealth to Bordeaux. The square clock is decorated with paintings and tapestries woven in the Gobelin factory.
