Hami Dahaidao is a clear example of what a Yadan is. In China there are quite a few of these so-called geological forests and in the province of Xinjiang there are several geological formations with this type of Yadan structure, the most beautiful and well-known being those in the Lop Nor Desert. This one in particular is known as "Devil City" or "Hami Devil City" due to the disturbing and supernatural atmosphere created by the imposing and steep rock formations, which can resemble the ruins of a city, and with a supernatural appearance. In China, it is common to use names similar to this, such as Ghost City, Ghost Desert, the City of the Eight Devils... generic names that increase the supernatural and mystery of these Yadan places. The word Yadan does not have an exact translation into other languages. In the scientific community, the word "yardang" is used to refer to this type of geological formation, which is characteristic of desert areas and is the result of wind erosion. Yardang also has no exact translation into any language. The word Yadan, as a set or the word yardang as a geological formation, are terms that come from Uyghur, a language spoken by the Uygur ethnic group, inhabitants of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwest China. A yardang is formed from rocks or sediments that are sculpted by the wind, creating elongated ridges, often with parallel grooves, where the different sedimentary strata are clearly distinguished, sometimes in several different colors. They vary in size, from formations a few meters long to others several kilometers long. This erosion process lasts for thousands or millions of years. At first, water currents are the main element of erosion. But when places become arid and waterless, it is then that the wind mostly does the work of shaping or "sculpting" these natural sculptures with elongated and strange shapes. The wind, blowing over the surface, selectively erodes the softer layers of rock or sediment, leaving behind the harder layers in the form of ridges or protuberances. It is a combined action of abrasion by the wearing away of sand particles carried by the wind and by deflation, removing the eroded and loose material from the rock, which is carried away by the wind itself. This aeolian process occurs when the wind always blows in the same direction and constantly collides with the same point of the yardang. That's why yardangs form exclusively in desert areas, where the wind can move at high speed, raising large quantities or dust clouds of sand. The tiny grains of suspended sand impact the yardang rock, eroding it imperceptibly. This erosion process acts as a natural sculptor, carving unique, often fantastical and fanciful shapes into the landscape. These yardangs, sculpted by nature, over time, after thousands or millions of years of being patiently shaped by the wind, are eventually completely destroyed and simply turned into dust and sand. The Great Sphinx of Giza, for example, was originally a yardang that began to erode more than 40,000 years ago. It was sculpted by nature, especially by the wind, and eventually, the Egyptians of the Pharaonic period used it as material to carve the Sphinx. Yadan or yardang landscapes tend to have elongated shapes, with one side exposed to the wind, which is usually steeper, and the other, gentler, on the opposite side. However, this erosion can give rise to very diverse forms, such as narrow ridges, mushroom-shaped structures, formations with a parallel structure of sedimentary strata, or very complex and imaginative structures. The Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is located in the extreme northwest of China and is the largest province in the country. This region, located in Central Asia, has a semi-arid to arid climate and is abundant in deserts and dry, arid areas. The best known is the Taklamakan Desert, which is the second largest desert on the planet. Another is the Gurbantunggut Desert, but this Lop Nor Desert is probably the most beautiful, being a Yadan landscape, where yardang formations abound. Xinjiang has a complex ethnic composition, as it is inhabited primarily by Uygurs, but also by Mongols, Russians, Han ethnic groups, Hui, Xibe, Tibetans, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, and Tajiks. This is because this vast province borders countries as diverse and different as Mongolia, or at the opposite extreme, India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. It also shares borders with Russia and the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and... Tajikistan.

Badlands is an Anglicism used to refer to wastelands, which are especially prevalent in the United States and are similar to yardangs. But Bruce Springsteen's song speaks of a different kind of barren or wasteland. He uses the term "Badlands" metaphorically to refer to other equally real places or situations. It's a song about resilience, perseverance, and hope amidst the adversity that is often encountered throughout life.

It's hard to decide which is J.J. Cale's best album. My favorite might be "5," but "Okie" is possibly Cale's most authentic. The album's title gives a clear reference to his roots. John Weldon Cale was born in Oklahoma City and grew up in Tulsa, a city that shaped his life. J.J. Cale is key to understanding what was called the "Tulsa sound," a musical genre that blends blues, rockabilly, and country. An Okie is a person who belongs to the state of Oklahoma. Okies have their own culture, dialect, music, and folklore. In other parts of the United States, such as California, the word "Okie" is used to refer to the very poor migrants from Oklahoma who arrived in search of work, fleeing the Great Depression. The "Okie" migration developed primarily during the 1930s. One of the most famous photographs in existence is "Migrant Mother" (1936) by Dorothea Lange, considered an iconic image of the Great Depression. It is a portrait of Florence Owens Thompson, an "okie" migrant, gazing anxiously into the distance, with a baby on her lap and two children huddled around her, reflecting the plight of farmworkers who migrated to California during the Great Depression. Although the most common meaning of "okie" is simply someone who was born or lives in Oklahoma or as a term to describe migrants from Oklahoma, it has occasionally been used as a pejorative word, as is often the case with all migration movements.

PS: I hope you have a happy holiday and some happy... summer days.

I have to say, this was amazing to see, the high lunchtime sun penetrating through the thankfully persistent mist created some truly breath-taking sights! Standing in one of my favourite areas in Hillock Wood, the sun beams appeared to follow the lines of the pines creating a real strange but beautiful effect. Ah the wonders of nature :)

Here I am

And I try to keep the balance right

And I try but it feels like wasted time

In meteorology, a cloud is an aerosol comprising a visible mass of minute liquid droplets, frozen crystals, or particles suspended in the atmosphere above the surface of a planetary body. The droplets and crystals may be made of water or various chemicals. On Earth, clouds are formed as a result of saturation of the air when it is cooled to its dew point, or when it gains sufficient moisture (usually in the form of water vapor) from an adjacent source to raise the dew point to the ambient temperature. They are seen in the Earth's homosphere (which includes the troposphere, stratosphere, and mesosphere). Nephology is the science of clouds which is undertaken in the cloud physics branch of meteorology.

There are two methods of naming clouds in their respective layers of the atmosphere; Latin and common. Cloud types in the troposphere, the atmospheric layer closest to Earth's surface, have Latin names due to the universal adaptation of Luke Howard's nomenclature. Formally proposed in 1802, it became the basis of a modern international system that divides clouds into five physical forms that appear in any or all of three altitude levels (formerly known as étages). These physical types, in approximate ascending order of convective activity, include stratiform sheets, cirriform wisps and patches, stratocumuliform layers (mainly structured as rolls, ripples, and patches), cumuliform heaps, and very large cumulonimbiform heaps that often show complex structure. The physical forms are divided by altitude level into ten basic genus-types. The Latin names for applicable high-level genera carry a cirro- prefix, and an alto- prefix is added to the names of the mid-level genus-types. Most of the genera can be subdivided into species and further subdivided into varieties.

Two cirriform clouds that form higher up in the stratosphere and mesosphere have common names for their main types. They are seen infrequently, mostly in the polar regions of Earth. Clouds have been observed in the atmospheres of other planets and moons in the Solar System and beyond. However, due to their different temperature characteristics, they are often composed of other substances such as methane, ammonia, and sulfuric acid as well as water.

Taken as a whole, homospheric clouds can be cross-classified by form and level to derive the ten tropospheric genera and the two additional major types above the troposphere. The cumulus genus includes three species that indicate vertical size. Clouds with sufficient vertical extent to occupy more than one altitude level are officially classified as low- or mid-level according to the altitude range at which each initially forms. However they are also more informally classified as multi-level or vertical.

Clytra laeviuscula is a beetle of the family Chrysomelidae and has a length of 7 - 11 mm. They occur almost throughout Europe and can be found in various habitats like forest edges, grassland, dry slopes and wet meadows. Adults can be found from May through August. These beetles mate near ant hills. Females coat each egg with particles of feces and drop them in the vicinity of the ant hill. The ants eventually carry them to their nest where the beetle larvae feed on the food of the ant brood as well as waste and sometimes on the brood. They build a shell of feces around themselves which protects them from the ants. The young imagines do not leave the nest before their chitin shell has hardened.

HFF out there!

On this day we were surprised by a snow storm on the way. The view was so bad that we had to drive very slowly by car. There was not much of the landscape left. Trees at a great distance were only dimly visible. From the storm, the fine snow particles were whirled up from the field.

A break in the predawn snowstorm provided a good opportunity to view Emerald Peak and the Cilantro Cafe. Only 2 other photogs here to share this morning beauty at Emerald Lake. So serene and quiet, till the buses arrived. A favorite morning.

"Legendary guide Tom Wilson first stumbled across this small gem of a lake – famed for its jade-coloured waters – in 1882 during the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. It was Wilson who gave the lake its name because of its remarkable colour, caused by fine particles of glacial sediment, also referred to as rock flour, suspended in the water. However, this was not the first time Wilson had dubbed a lake 'Emerald'. Earlier that same year he had discovered another lake which he had given the same moniker, and the name even appeared briefly on the official map. This first lake however, was shortly renamed Lake Louise."

Käptn Peng - Monster - CARDINAL SESSIONS

I'm being menaced by a monster

(which is as) tall as a building,

as big as the Pacific.

I've brought it out of the cave,

it's free and wants to eat,

murder, devour me, tear me apart.

It has 7 billion heads which duplicate

as soon as I behead one.

It's incredible, gigantic and indescribable,

but my battle against it sadly is unavoidable.

I need to hunt and beat it,

(I need to) bury it 1000 meters beneath the ground.

But before (doing so) I need to find it,

sometimes I feel like I'm going blind,

I don't see it but I know it's near,

It's on my heels, no matter how far I drive.

Even now in this moment,

please, please, believe me,

a goddamned beast is standing in this room.

I have secretly infiltrated you all,

I'm the sign which you saw too late,

I'm the dark you constantly fear

I'm your counterpart, I'm your relative,

I'm the sum of all things which hate you,

of all things which hunt you and make you hate yourself

everything which makes you shrink and poisons you internally,

when your opponents are dead I'm the one who defeats you.

I'm everything that you are not.

You destroy yourself,

I've incited you to do so.

I want to hunt you

I want to seize you,

I want to bite you

I want to kill, skin, take, raze you,

I want to tear you apart,

I want to lacerate you.

Why don't you want to understand?

If you don't stop fearing me

I won't stop attacking you.

We are the particles of a whole,

we dance around ourselves/each other.

I'm the shadow you never face.

You need to decide.

How long shall we continue avoiding to quarrel?

You make us enemies, (you) prolong our suffering,

if you let me into your heart at last

you could ride on my back.

We could glide,

together we could achieve so much.

We need to mature and finally realize,

there's no way around it,

we need to unite.

An aurora (pl. aurorae or auroras), also commonly known as the northern lights (aurora borealis) or southern lights (aurora australis), is a natural light display in Earth's sky, predominantly seen in high-latitude regions (around the Arctic and Antarctic). Auroras display dynamic patterns of brilliant lights that appear as curtains, rays, spirals, or dynamic flickers covering the entire sky.

Auroras are the result of disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by the solar wind. Major disturbances result from enhancements in the speed of the solar wind from coronal holes and coronal mass ejections. These disturbances alter the trajectories of charged particles in the magnetospheric plasma. These particles, mainly electrons and protons, precipitate into the upper atmosphere (thermosphere/exosphere). The resulting ionization and excitation of atmospheric constituents emit light of varying colour and complexity. The form of the aurora, occurring within bands around both polar regions, is also dependent on the amount of acceleration imparted to the precipitating particles.

Most of the planets in the Solar System, some natural satellites, brown dwarfs, and even comets also host auroras.
