Blue flag / Verschiedenfarbige Schwertlilie (Iris versicolor "Kermesina")
in our garden - Frankfurt-Nordend
A fading, yet still almost intact Variegated Fritillary butterfly visiting a spiny Teasel flower.
Considered uncommon to the area. I've seen them almost every year I go out. This is my first at this location. For some reason these creatures frighten easily and are very hard to approach which makes taking an unobstructed photo difficult.
After a difficult start (too many late Spring frosts) our blue 'mophead' hydrangeas are finally blossoming. They all start like this, with a small cluster of pale blue and yellow petals. Then as they grow they turn fully blue and bigger!
Hoping that you have a restful and relaxing weekend

The cat in our garden is a stranger, probably a stray one.
Thank you all for visits, favs and comments, it's greatly appreciated!
A older adult male Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna) recently came in for a quick visit. Didn't stay long.
A immature male Indigo Bunting. This guy is still getting his blue colors. Probably a first year bird.
Our circle of birds coming to the new feeder is widening. So far it has been mostly robins and blackbirds but this collared dove is getting bolder. Surprising how timid and cautious birds are towards anything new, even feeders full of lovely seed.
I've been observing this nest since March 30th.
That is the day on which the swan mother sat down on the nest for the first time.
In between it was very cold and brooding was interrupted, but also resumed. About two weeks ago the swans cleaned the nest and ate a few eggs that were apparently dead. Today I saw that two chicks hatched. It could be that there is still something to come.
the weather wasn't the best this morning.
I stay tuned

Was surprised to see this unknow plant in my flowerbed this spring. Identified by a friend, it has to go. We already fight too many weeds in our pastures. Deer-proof, evergreen, hardy, invasive, fast spreading - and restricted in 12 US states.
Meet my latest Barnie. I found this young man quartering in a field just after spotting the SEO posted a few days ago.
I had heard about this owl when talking to a local farmer.
The farmer advised that they are currently raising three chicks in his barn.
With vole numbers down their chances are not too good.

This small Butterfly enjoyed the Cornflower so much that it stayed on the flower for some time.
It has now been identified on iNaturalist as a Yellow-banded Dart (Ocybadistes walkeri)
Man sollte früh anfangen, sein Baby ins Museum mitzunehmen...

You shouldn't wait too long bringing your baby into a museum...
Dorcadion aethiops (Schwarzer Erdbock) Klosterneuburg, Niederösterreich, Austria. A species that seems to be reaching Austria from the South.
It's always exciting to discover a new species in the garden. I spotted this decorative and rather formidable spider on the wall of our recycling bunker. It's a false wolf spider - zoropsis spinimana, which is a recent introduction from the Mediterranean area and for some unknown reason seems to enjoy the London area. It has a venomous bite but not enough venom to cause too much harm. Next time I see it, I hope it will be in a better lit location. This one was clinging to a shady wall so the photo quality is rather poor.
CSX ST70AH 8902 crosses the Kankakee River in Momence with Q648. This is the first time one of these units has come this far north.
The Dębogórze fuel base in the suburbs of Gdynia has a new workhorse. The S200-289 was produced in the ČKD works in Czechoslovakia in 1986 and surprisingly had been working on broad gauge, as the only 1520mm S200 in Poland, for its entire lifetime... until 2023. After a big repair it was refitted to work on standard gauge and very surprisingly has been assigned to the Dębogórze fuel base, which earlier has only been worked by two T448p locomotives.
Here it can be seen leaving the fuel base towards the post BP, where this siding connects to the PKP station Gdynia Port. On hook is a loaded fuel train with a total mass of over 3000 tonnes. This was the first time that I could photograph it, despite visiting the place relatively often.

This Three-cornered leek (Allium triquetrum) or Snowbell suddenly appeared in our garden in April which was a lovely surprise to find. I understand that it can become invasive but I rather like it and am going to let it stay and I have just learnt that it is edible so will try to remember to use it next year.
