The Winter natural wreckage at McCord Creek in the wake of the Eagle Creek Fire is on display. The trail had been closed for 3 years since the fire, and it finally opened up on the 1st. We took a very short hike, and I managed to get a few pictures. I decided that this one needed to be black and white.

This was my first hike up to Upper McCord Creek Falls in a few years. I was rather surprised to have made it up there because the trail is suppoed to be closed. I was going to hike until I saw the barrier erected to close the trail (usually caution tape), but I never saw one. It's a steep trail. My heart rate was up to 140 BPM about 3/4 of the way up. I bought an Apple watch so I can keep track of things like that. I'm undergoing a process I call"debasketballification", which means "losing weight". Strenuous hikes are good for that.

The underbrush that has grown since the Eagle Creek Fire has blocked every place to set up a tripod near this waterfall, so I had to hold the camera over my head, and hope that I framed it right when I fired the shutter. Maybe in a few years, the stronger trees will have eliminated the competition enough to get a better view, and a longer exposure.

This is from a few years ago, back before the Eagle Creek Fire, and the Covid-19 pandemic when someone could roam the Columbia Gorge trails at will. I do miss those days.

This beautiful falls is only a short hike up from Elowah falls which is along the Columbia Gorge, Oregon

Uh-oh, back to the lame photo titles....McCord Creek, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon. Elowah Falls is upstream and the upper falls beyond that. The leaves are turning early in the Gorge this autumn, so anyone hankering to shoot the fall colours here should get on it this week. I certainly hope to, if circumstances turn in my favor - no guarantee of that, though, and my scheduled shooting vacation is still two weeks off....

Thanks for viewing!

If you are in to bushwhacking and shooting the beautful creeks of the Pacific Northwest than McCord Creek has your name on it.

This is one of the last shots I took on this day and by this time my feet were literally numb. Also>>my eye was not feeling too good from an earlier branch in the eye episode. OK I'm done whining.

This shot>> as simple as it looks was a nightmare. The lighting was tough and I couldn't accomplish the exposure. The water was getting blown out and I really wanted that flow to look good. I ended up stacking a couple ND filters and moving them around while i was taking the shot.

This area is really nice and the creek is definitely going to get a long second look.

This shot brought to you by great personal risk to my camera... Elowah Falls and McCord Creek were absolutely raging from 3 straight days of rain combined with snow melt in the upper regions of the Columbia River Gorge. Venturing out into the creek to find compositions was pretty much impossible and the lone accessible spot I could find was splashing quite a bit, as you can see in this frame. It was time to get patient about wiping off the lens, relaxed about gear getting wet, and creative with composing and focusing with not much room to work with. Happy to have come away with a view of the falls I like.

The roof, obviously.

From the site you read:

"This exhibition offers a new perspective on the career of William Notman (1826–1891), who became the first Canadian photographer with an international reputation during the nineteenth-century. It demonstrates how Notman owed his success to the modernity of his approach to photography – an approach founded on principles of communication and innovation."

I found this really pristine spot at Upper McCord Creek in the Columbia River Gorge last week with my son. It had a nice whirlpool that was swirling the fallen leaves in the flowing creek. The afternoon light accentuated the mood and made for a great scene, in my mind. Have a great Sunday! 5 more days in Oregon!

Upper McCord Creek Falls is swollen with November rains in the Columbia River Gorge, near Portland, Oregon. The winter rain in the Pacific Northwest is legendary, and not without reason: On Thanksgiving alone it rained nearly 1", and of course, it also rained for the several days leading up to Thanksgiving, and many of the days afterwards. While not necessarily the best photography weather in terms of keeping equipment dry and safe, the incoming moisture does have noticeable, and beautiful, effects on waterfalls. The rain has other side effects too, such as creating trails that are really impossible to navigate while keeping the feet dry, due to the preponderance of puddles of indeterminate depth. I find The Gorge almost an endless place to explore, with creeks in numerous folds and crannies, and more waterfalls than can be easily enumerated. Despite having grown up near Portland, it is not very hard at all to spend a day investigating someplace I've never visited, which leads me to conclude that a sense of familiarity can breed a false sense of knowing, and mask the intricacies of reality.

Hand-held, due to the stubby travel tripod being too darn short.

I revisited one of my favorite spots this weekend - the base of Elowah Falls and McCord Creek in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon. I decided to try to improve upon my prior photograph from early summer, with a winter composition further back and looking more down upon the creek. I had to do some tricky maneuvering to get up a mossy boulder to get this sweet view of a small reflection of the falls on the boulder in front of me. On the way back out of the creek, I fell in and banged up my leg nicely, but no damage to my camera, which is all I care about. It was raining, cold, and breezy, making for some very challenging shooting conditions. Tomorrow I head to the coast to see what else I can photograph out there. Happy New Year!

William Workman, (1807-1878), originaire d'Irlande.

I was in the Gorge last Saturday for what turned out to be a very short hike. I went out too late to make it to Upper McCord Creek falls, but I wanted to get a decent way up. That was not happening, because the rain started in earnest, and darkness was falling by the time I made it about a quarter mile. That's okay. I got this picture.

I don't often do this, but I am putting both a black and white version of this, and a color version.

Happy waterfall Wednesday! Heres a look at one of the twin falls of Upper McCord creek, a fun little falls above Elowah in the Columbia River Gorge.
