Situated at the mouth of the Humber estuary, between Cleethorpes and Humberston, this is one of two forts built during the First World War, to protect the entrance to the river, though not actually completed until after the war.
My first visit here, not sure why it’s taken me so long, but a great morning shooting through the sunrise.

A corner view of the Fiddick House in Galena. John Fiddick was born in Cornwell, England in 1826. He immigrated to the United States in 1841, and became a prominent dry goods merchant in Galena. Fiddick built this beautiful Second Empire style mansion in 1859, with additions made in 1883. He lived to the age of 92, and is buried in Galena's Greenwood Cemetery along with his wife, Mary.
This angle also provides a glimpse of the Asa Haile Row House next door. This Federal-style brick home with Greek Revival accents was constructed in 1856 for Asa Haile Row, a riverboat captain and successful mason. Both the Fiddick House and Row House are contributing properties in the Galena Historic District which encompasses 85 percent of the City of Galena and includes more than 800 properties. The Galena Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, with modifications in 2013.
Galena is the seat of Jo Daviess County in the northwest corner of Illinois. This is the unglaciated area of northwestern Illinois. The rolling hills, history and abundant 19th century architecture draws visitors from throughout the country. The estimated population of Galena in 2019 was 3,158.
On the occasion of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee these days I remembered this photo in our family archive. In February 1965 we had lived in Ethiopia, where we had the opportunity to see the Queen, Prince Philip and Emperor Haile Selassie, who wears the Field Marshal's uniform with a lion’s mane helmet. My father took this image at the greeting celebration after the Queen had landed at the airport in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa.

Another shot from the visit to Humberston Fitties to shoot Haile Sand Fort at sunrise, which can be seen as the small speck on the horizon.

The highest clouds in the Earth’s atmosphere - night shining clouds seen to the north above Haile village fields. The sun is able to light these clouds all through the summer night whilst it is not far below the northern horizon.
On a beautiful Dickenson County afternoon, empty Haile, FL - Typo, Ky unit train E444-08 rolls by the US&S P-5 signals at S.E. Allen with the CSXT 410 north in the lead.
Rerouted across the Cumberland Valley earlier in the day due to the south end of the CRR being closed, this train of 103 KGLX autoflood II hoppers came up from the Argos Cement Plant near Newberry, Florida; word on the street is this is the last complete set left in the eastern US.

Peace is the only battle worth waging.”
Albert Camus
Peace is a day-to-day problem, the product of a multitude of events and judgments. Peace is not an ‘is,’ it is a ‘becoming.
Haile Selassie
Be selective in your battles. Sometimes peace is better than being right.

Of all our dreams today, there is none more important—or so hard to realize—than that of peace in the world.
Lester B. Pearson
Peace is not the highest goal in life. It is the most fundamental requirement.
Sadhguru
World peace can be achieved when, in each person, the power of love replaces the love of power.
Sri Chinmoy
You can’t separate peace from freedom because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom.
Malcolm X
Not one of us can rest, be happy, be at home, be at peace with ourselves, until we end hatred and division.
Congressman, John Lewis
Peace brings with it so many positive emotions that it is worth aiming for in all circumstances.

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! ❤️❤️❤️
Interesting World War Two fort, one of two actually designed at the start of World War One and built over the war years to defend the mouth of the River Humber, the fort wasn’t actually completed until WW1 was over so it first saw service in WW2. In use by the military until 1956 now privately owned and in a state of repair commensurate with its age, I do wonder if they could be brought back into service if Trump or Putin decide to annex the U.K. I’m only joking, of course, but I’m honing my drone skills just in case it does happen and I get recruited into the Home Guard!
No trip to Cleethorpes is complete without a shot of Haile Sand Fort, a World War One gun emplacement at the mouth of the Humber Estuary. The birds added the extra attraction of the fly by.
Wife and consort of Emperor Haile Selassie I. Empress Menen was the daughter of Jantirar Asfaw of Ambassel, and Woizero Sehin Mikael. Through her mother, Empress Menen was the granddaughter of Nigus Mikael, King of Wollo, and neice of Lij Iyasu (Iyasu V). Nigus Mikael's family claimed decent from the Prophet Mohammed. Negus Mikael's first wife, Woizero Fantaye Gebru (maternal grandmother of Empress Menen) was a decentant of Emperor Susneyous the Catholic in the Seife Melekot line. Through her father Jantirar Asfaw, Empress Menen was a direct decendent of Emperor Gelawdiwos and his daughter Enkulal. Thus the Empress had significant Solomonic blood as well. First married to Dejazmatch Ali of Cherecha, she bore the Dejazmatch a daughter, Woizero Belainesh Ali, and a son, Jantirar Asfaw Ali. After she divorced her first husband, Empress Menen married Dejazmatch Amede Ali Aba-Deyas, by whom she had another daughter, Woizero Desta Amede and a son, Jantirar Gebregziabiher Amede. Following the sudden death of her second husband, her grandfather Negus Mikael arranged for her to marry the much older Ras Leul Seged. She had no children by Ras Leul Seged, and this marriage was disolved at the order of her uncle Lij Iyasu who arranged to have her marry Dejazmatch Taffari Makonnen, who later became Emperor Haile Selassie. With Emperor Haile Selassie, she would have six children, Princess Tenagnework, Prince Asfaw Wossen, Princess Zenebework, Princess Tsehai, Prince Makonnen and Prince Sahle Selassie. The Empress died in 1961 after a long illness.
The second of a trio of images taken of this interesting old World War Two fort. The building is now showing its age but all in all it’s in remarkable condition given its exposed location. I suppose the building is testament to the quality of construction as I guess it will have been built at speed. With hindsight I wish I’d moved the drone a little to the northwest so as to take in more of the onshore wind farm in the distance.

Something a little different from me today. This won't be everyones cup of tea but ICM is a technique that I have messed around with occasionally over the past few years. I really like the results that can be achieved but it is actually very tricky to get a good image. Subject, light, colour , shutter speed and movement are all elements which are important, just like they are in a 'standard' photograph, but there is definitely an element of trial and error involved. On this occasion I took approx 20 shots of these trees before I got this image which I am happy with. I have managed to bag another couple which I think work well and I will post these in the next few days.
A world War 2 gun emplacement in the Humber Estuary off Cleethorpes Beach...the same morning as Cleethorpes Sunrise.
Finally can tick this off my bucket list. I've always been fascinated with these ever since I went on a day trip as a very young lad, and my dad told me about them.
This one is the Haile Sands Fort, the one closet to Cleethorpes, and it's such a great sight to see this up close, finally.
A stunning display of noctilucent clouds seen across Dent, Cumbria. It’s a pleasure to be out during the night at the moment as it’s so warm, still and dry! In the early hours of Monday 9th July this was one of the best displays I’ve ever seen.
On a recent trip to Cleethorpes I witnessed a series of incredible sunrises over 4 days from Humberston across the tidal flats towards Haile Sand Fort, a World War 2 gun emplacement at the mouth of the Humber Estuary.
Taken in downtown Covington, Kentucky.
It was impossible for me to get a great shot of the mural w/o all the wires and because it was above the first floor and so hidden somewhat by the Point Learning Center building. If I hadn't retraced my steps that day, I wouldn't have even known it was there as it is only visible form one direction.
From the net:
"A picture of banker and philanthropist Ralph Haile, depicted against a stylized map of the region's urban core, now welcomes everyone entering Covington on Pike Street. It even features his signature bow tie.
"He started wearing bow ties when, as a young banker, his tie would get stuck in the teller drawer," Haile Foundation CEO Tim Maloney said.
Haile's bank was just around the corner in what is now Ralph Haile Square at Sixth and Madison. He wasn't a Kentucky native, but he helped push revitalization and riverfront development in the area. His family foundation is the driving force behind the multi-million dollar BLINK art and light festival."
In a village near Egremont, another view of a church I have on here. The far side of the church is stone, not white. With Medieval walls and Georgian windows it is a Grade ll Listed Building.

This was captured in the historic Haile home stead, located near Gainesville, Florida. The lake is Lochloosa, near Cross Creek, Florida, the long time home of novelist Marjorie Kennan Rawlings.
Haile Selassie I Emperor of Ethiopia
(Ge'ez: ቀዳማዊ ኃይለ ሥላሴ, 23 July 1892 – 27 August 1975), born Tafari Makonnen Woldemikael, was Ethiopia's regent from 1916 to 1930 and emperor from 1930 to 1974. He also served as Chairperson of the Organisation of African Unity from 25 May 1963 to 17 July 1964 and 5 November 1966 to 11 September 1967. He was a member of the Solomonic Dynasty.
At the League of Nations in 1936, the emperor condemned the use of chemical weapons by Italy against his people during the Second Italo–Ethiopian War. His internationalist views led to Ethiopia becoming a charter member of the United Nations, and his political thought and experience in promoting multilateralism and collective security have proved seminal and enduring. His suppression of rebellions among the landed aristocracy (the mesafint), which consistently opposed his reforms, as well as what some critics perceived to be Ethiopia's failure to modernize rapidly enough, earned him criticism among some contemporaries and historians. During his rule the Harari people were ethnically cleansed from the Harari Region. His regime was also criticized by human rights groups, such as Human Rights Watch, as autocratic and illiberal.
Among the Rastafari movement, whose followers are estimated to number between 700,000 and one million, Haile Selassie is revered as the returned messiah of the Bible, God incarnate. Beginning in Jamaica in the 1930s, the Rastafari movement perceives Haile Selassie as a messianic figure who will lead a future golden age of eternal peace, righteousness, and prosperity. Haile Selassie was an Ethiopian Orthodox Christian throughout his life. He is a defining figure in Ethiopian history.
The 1973 famine in Ethiopia led to Haile Selassie's eventual removal from the throne. He died on 27 August 1975 at the age of 83, following a coup d'état.
