1. Batellerie de Loire, une tradition toujours vivante :
Du XVIIe au XIXe siècle, alors que les ponts se faisaient encore rares, la Loire était la principale voie commerciale pour le transport des marchandises mais aussi de passage pour les habitants des villages ligériens. Le fleuve royal a ainsi donné naissance à la Marine de Loire et à une multitude de bateaux traditionnels, à découvrir encore aujourd’hui.
2. Petite histoire de la batellerie de Loire
Avant l’avènement des ponts et du chemin de fer, la Loire était une importante voie commerciale. Chanvre, pierre de tuffeau, épices et vins étaient autant de marchandises transportées d’un bout à l’autre du fleuve, entre Orléans et Nantes. C’était aussi une pourvoyeuse de poissons : saumons, brochets et sandres abondaient, au grand bonheur des habitants et des nombreux pêcheurs professionnels d’autrefois.
Si cette époque a pris fin, elle n’est malgré tout pas tout à fait révolue ! Quelques passionnés continuent à la faire vivre, grâce à des répliques de bateaux traditionnels.
3. Les différents bateaux traditionnels à fond plat :
Un fond plat adapté à la navigation fluviale et à un faible tirant d’eau, voila la caractéristique commune des fameux bateaux traditionnels de Loire.
. Plus gros bateau ligérien, la gabare est un bateau à voile blanche ou rouge de quelque 22 tonnes qui servait à transporter les marchandises. Cette embarcation propulsée par la force du vent possède un fond plat. Surmonté d'une voile rectangulaire, elle mesure de 15 à 30 mètres de long et jusqu'à 5 mètres de large. Une taille qui permettait de transporter jusqu'à 80 tonnes de marchandises. Ce type de bateau a disparu à la fin du 19e siècle, notamment suite à l'arrivée du gouvernail.
. La toue, plus petite, est l’embarcation type des pêcheurs. Elle peut être « cabanée » (présence d’une petite cabane). Ce bateau à fond plat et à la voile carrée mesure entre 10 et 15 mètres de long. Il tire son nom du verbe anglais "tow" (tirer, remorquer). Il est à l’origine de la technique de touage au XIXe siècle ; activité qui consistait à remorquer des péniches à l’aide de bateau grâce à une chaîne.
La toue sert autant au transport de personne qu’aux marchandises de pêche. Sa proue est large et son faible tirant d’eau permet d'apponter facilement les bords de Loire.
Cette embarcation traditionnelle était utilisée pour la pêche au saumon au filet-barrage, ainsi que pour l’extraction du sable
. Plus petit bateau de Loire, le fûtreau servait aux pêcheurs mais aussi aux passeurs et aux habitants. Une activité aujourd’hui relancée pour passer d’une rive à l’autre.
Le fûtreau est l'un des plus petit bateaux de Loire. Cette embarcation à fond plat mesure entre 6 et 11 mètres de long. Son gréement carré est utilisé pour la pêche à l’anguille et à l’alose mais aussi pour le transport. Le fûtreau était aussi utilisé comme annexe des grands chalands et comme moyen de transport pour les riverain du fleuve. Il faut savoir que ces principaux modes de propulsion étaient la bourde, la rame ou la voile carrée.
. Enfin, la plate de Loire : Un petit bateau traditionnel de 5,50 mètres de long. Cette embarcation "plate" comme son nom l'indique, était notamment utilisée lors des crues. Et plus original, on se servait de la plate également dans le cadre sportif.

A pretty backyard bird. But, wow, are they pigs at the feeders. They will sit and eat and eat and eat. One interesting thing about their feeding habits is how they deal with sunflower seeds. Inside the hard outer shell, the seed itself has a thin seedcoat, or testa, covering it. It appears the finches don't want to ingest it. They use their beaks and tongues to remove it, and the feeder will gradually "grow" a top layer of translucent seedcoats.

Son uno de los símbolos de la ciudad y poseen un enorme valor tanto cultural como histórico. En 2010, el Comité del Patrimonio Mundial decidió presentar la zona de canales concéntricos del siglo XVII como candidata a entrar a formar parte de la Lista del Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO.
Como dato técnico, es interesante saber que cada tres días el agua de los canales es totalmente renovada, lo cual se realiza cerrando cada noche una decena de esclusas y bombeando miles y miles de metros cúbicos de agua desde la isla de Zeeburg.
Si bien la cantidad de canales es bastante importante, los canales principales son cuatro, dispuestos en forma semicircular concéntrica: Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht y Prinsengracht, aunque hay otros canales secundarios más pequeños que son también muy atractivos.
Típica de Amsterdam es la arquitectura de las llamadas "casas del canal", construidas por pequeños y medianos comerciantes, caracterizadas por sus estrechas y relativamente altas fachadas. En su mayoría consistían de un depósito de mercancías instalado en el altillo y la vivienda propiamente dicha. Las mercancías eran transportadas por los canales y subidas a los altillos por medio de unos montacargas que todavía pueden observarse en algunas viviendas. Los característicos hastiales (rectos, escalonados, en forma de cuello o campana) que rematan la parte superior de las fachadas fueron pensados en principio para ocultar los tejados, aunque respetando en la diversidad un cierto estilo típicamente holandés. Hasta que el sistema de numeración vino a reemplazarla, la forma de identificar cada vivienda consistía en colocar una placa con escenas que representaran el oficio o la ocupación de sus habitantes. Algunas todavía están en su lugar, otras fueron rescatadas y expuestas en los jardines del Rijksmuseum.
