Amazing natural and artificial lighting games on Nikiforos's Railway Station building !!! Enjoy the beautiful after sunset atmosphere with the small stony fountain on the left, the abandoned but still in excellent condition building and the three still showing off their intense red color chairs that were once used by travellers !!!

I wanted the viewer's eye to be able to immediately focus on the light of the lamp on the building and I believe I pretty much did it !!!

The collegiate church of Herzogenburg marks the end of the High Baroque in Austria

When it was built in 1882, the Alexandra Bridge was one of the country’s largest, strongest and most beautiful bridges, a feat of engineering. In 2013 the surviving piers, towers and abutments of the bridge are a monument to the skills of its engineer Leslie Duncan Macgeorge. The structures have withstood the power of the Clutha/Mata-au, one of New Zealand’s largest and swiftest rivers, for over 130 years.

I told you that on the morning of the 30th of July I came face to face with maybe the most interesting from a "photographic" point of view sky I've ever seen .... The sun, not yet visible, sends its piercing rays through the scattered clouds all over the earth ... The whole Nature around wears the warm colors of a beautiful sunrise .... I decided to take down the scene by altering the white balance of my camera, adjusting it exactly at 5800 deg. Kelvin ... I believe the final result rewarded my choice ...

Earth on the other hand, feeling propably sky jealous, uses Strimonas river to try to visualy absorb everything that takes place up there in the sky !!!

With the Isle of Portland shrouded in sea mist, an unidentified ship is just visible moored in the Weymouth Bay.

Many historic railroad lines run through Bohemia, including the Franz Joseph Railway from Vienna to Pilsen/Prague. On the way to Prague, I was able to take a picture of the pretty village of Arnoštovice with its graceful church tower from the Rychlik.

Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere

The phrase "in Trastevere" (beyond the Tiber) describes the neighborhood of Rome in which the Basilica of Santa Maria is located. In ancient times, the neighborhood was mainly inhabited by immigrants, sailors, fishermen, and retired soldiers. Before Roman Emperor Constantine the Great (306–337 AD) decriminalized Christian worship by issuing the Edict of Milan in 313, Christian worship took place in "tituli"--private "house churches" that were sometimes named for the priest designated by church authorities as the patron. The original house church in this site was founded in 220 by Pope Callixtus I, who died in 222; and it became known as "Titulus Callisti."

The oratory of the house church that Pope Callixtus I proposed to build at this location necessitated displacement of part of the "Taberna meritoria" (a tavern and refuge for retired soldiers). This created a dispute between Christians and tavern-keepers. The new and young Roman Emperor Alexander Severus (approximately 14 years old)--not himself a Christian--settled the dispute in favor of the Christians, reportedly declaring, "I prefer that it should belong to those who honor God, whatever be their form of worship." Implicit in the young emperor's ruling, Christian worship in the church was known about and allowed 93 years before such worship's official decriminilization in 313's Edict of Milan. This then became one of the first locations (perhaps the very first location) of imperially permitted Christian worship in Rome.

According to inscriptions in the basilica, the original structure was rebuilt and enlarged in 340, restored in the 5th and 8th centuries, then re-erected on its old foundations in 1140-1143. The remains of Pope Callixtus I are preserved under the altar.

The central nave down which this photo looks, is built on the original floor plan. It is bounded on the sides by an assortment of granite columns that were taken from various ancient Roman ruins.

Bit of a story here....

Some 29 years ago (yikes!) I arrived in Sheffield having transferred from London Ambulance to take up my new post at Longley Ambulance Station.

I filled a vacancy there due to a chap leaving and going off to Canada to start a new life over there in the ambulance service.

His name was/is Lou Gelsthorpe.

The other day I was sat in Middlewood Ambulance Station when a guy came in and asked if there were any 'old' ambulance men about..

I said no everybody was out bar me and the cleaners.

I asked him what he wanted 'old ambulance men' for and he said that he used to work for South Yorkshire Ambulance a while back but had moved to Canada...

The penny slowly dropped and I asked him his name.....

Yes! It was/is the same guy! Lou Gelsthorpe!

I was amazed at seeing him and then I told him that I was the guy who took his place at Longley Station 29 years ago... It was then his turn to be amazed...!

What a thing eh!

For me to be at Middlewood Station when he called in on the off chance & not even the station we were both at 29 years ago either!.

Amazing..!

We sat down and had a bit of a reminisce and I got out the station photo albums and we looked through them and he saw guys and gals that he recognised and even remembered names of! I had to point out the ones who had not only retired but had unfortunately died as well.. (bit sad but very good too!)

He couldn't stay too long but I asked if I could take a picture of him and put it up here on Flickr..

So I did! There he is in the top one with one of our newest vehicles.....

Plus for a 'context' view I have placed him (in the lower picture) leaning on the very vehicles that both he & I drove & worked from out of Longley Station, but of course not at the same time!

Not a great 'clone' shot but I thought I'd put them together...

Wow what an interesting encounter eh!

Lou said that he had some old photos from his time with SYAS and would email them to me... So watch this space..

I work for Yorkshire Ambulance Service on the RRVs in and around the city of Sheffield in South Yorkshire.

It’s a great job and I feel very honoured to be able to help people at their point of need.

Check out the website for all sorts of info re YAS and the work we do.
