Today we travel to my favorite park, the Magic Kingdom, for a shot of Engine Co. 71 fire station which pays homage to the year the Magic Kingdom was opened. Here you can see glass cases with hundreds of local Firehouse patches that have been donated to Disney from firehouses all across the country. Do you make it a "must visit" when your going to the Magic Kingdom? Have a magical day!

As you make your way underneath the Train Station tunnels heading into the Magic Kingdom, you’ll find both City Hall and the Fire Station of the fictitious “Engine Co. 71” (the number 71 came from 1971, the year Walt Disney World opened) on the left side of Town Square. Unlike it’s Disneyland counterpart, the WDW Fire Station did not house an apartment for Walt Disney (an apartment in WDW for his family was to be built inside the Castle). Also, this one is not to be confused with the real fire department of Walt Disney World, the Reedy Creek Fire Department (RCFD).

“The Disney World property is protected by a full time paid fire department, the Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID) Fire Department. They provide fire protection and emergency medical services to the parks and they also respond as mutual aid to the surrounding counties. By the 1990's their were 4 stations, 2 stations were standard type fire stations and 2 were double wide mobile homes. There are about 200 firefighters, who work on 3 platoons, with one platoon on duty at all times. The firefighters are on duty for 24hrs. and then they are off duty for 48hrs.. The department responds to about 10,000 calls a year. One of the daily duties of the firefighters is to inspect each kitchen to insure that it is clean and free of defects that could cause a fire, a kitchen that is found to have a fire hazard is not allowed to open until the hazard is removed. In the first 25 years Walt Disney World has not had a major building fire loss on the property, most of the fire loss comes from automobile fires in the parking lot. The Walt Disney World property has one of the most stringent fire codes in America, most of the states' fire codes now follow their lead.” - wiki

^obviously that information hasn’t been updated in a while, but I don’t think Disney has lost a building to fire in the last 15 years either (in addition to the “first 25” the article refers to above). Very impressive.

This shot is nothing fancy, but it is a good example of how a tilt-shift lens can be used to get close to taller buildings and help keep vertical lines straight to avoid convergence if you’re after that effect. That being said, I’m not sure I’ll be “straightening up” any more buildings at WDW. These types of shots are very technical in nature, taking a lot of time to execute and I just don’t feel the resulting static building images pack any kind of punch or "wow" factor that I like to see in Disney photography.

Nothing really special about this particular shot accept that it's helping me get even more excited about our upcoming trip. This was taken with my good old 50mm f/1.8D, which was a really great money and still is one of the best bangs for the buck. Can't wait to be standing on Main Street again, now with all the Halloween decorations, and shoot with all this new knowledge I've acquired over the last couple of years since I was there last. Please let me know what you all think as any suggestions are welcomed and appreciated. Enjoy!

Tried to keep this somewhat on the simple side. I think this might even be the only picture I have of this firehouse.

"Main Street, U.S.A. is America at the turn of the century - the crossroads of an era. The gas lamps and the electric lamps, the horse drawn car and the auto car. Main Street is everyone's home town...the heartline of America." - Walt Disney

My grandfather was a firefighter. He died in the line of duty when my mom was 13 so I never had the chance to know him. And even though I never thought of following in his footsteps, I still seem to be drawn to firehouses.

This was one of my favorites from this morning at Magic Kingdom. I really love Main Street and love spending time there. I got this one in Town Square of some of the great blooms hanging from the lightposts. I was really happy I had another chance to get back to Main Street for some shooting. :) Enjoy!

So, apparently the Engine Co 71 closed down this last year around July. Altough I haven't heard what will be going in here, if anything. Does anybody else know?

Still a cool building to shoot, and it's all decorated for Christmas!
