A shot that is unmistakably L.A.: the iconic Theme Building of the airport, built almost sixty years ago. At first the restaurant rotated, so diners would overlook the entire airport area. The restaurant is no longer in operation; the current security situation is not too compatible with a restaurant that one would have to leave the secure area for. But there is talk of building a people mover and moving a brewpub into the restaurant.
Originally constructed in 1961 as the Los Angeles International Airport Theme Building. It is presently Encounter Restaurant with additional businesses sharing part of the building. I think I see George Jetson and Mr. Spacely siting down to a business luncheon.
always wanted to do some long exposures inside airport grounds but never really made the effort until today. i didn't really know which parking structure to park at and shoot from so i basically tried to go into as many of them as i could and see the views from there. i kept wondering if airport police would come and tell me to leave. didn't happen and i didn't want to tempt fate so i didn't stay long.
This is the landmark theme building at LAX, home of Encounters restaurant. We were just there for dinner to see friends passing through LA on their way to Patagonia, and found out that the restaurant will be closing its doors on 12/31. Though setting is the main draw, it was still sad to hear of its closing,. I returned the next day to take commemorative photos. I was exceedingly fortunate with the weather.
Stay tuned for a series on this structure, both the exterior and interior.
LAX March 1978. Many thought the building was another control tower. Note the absence of the upper levels and parking structures.

Often mistaken as the "Control Tower" it's an iconic building that few people ever have the time to visit at LAX, but it's quite an eyeful, and the food is way better than you normally get at airports
