Sashimi- Ematei - Toronto - November 2009

Had the Omakase which consisted of:

- appetizer (tofu in a miso sauce)

- sashimi www.flickr.com/photos/yenc/4268284082/ & www.flickr.com/photos/yenc/4267537969/

- a soup which had egg, unagi and mushrooms

- soba noodles

- grilled eggplant, black cod www.flickr.com/photos/yenc/4268282938/

- tempura okra, mushrooms and fish www.flickr.com/photos/yenc/4268283270/

- sushi http://www.flickr.com/photos/yenc/4268284672/ & http://www.flickr.com/photos/yenc/4268318068/

- dessert (agar jelly with fruits)

Top row (L to R): Chirashi san-something set #2, Chirashi set #3, Salmon Don with ikura (salmon roe)

Bottom row (L to R): beef and simmered egg on rice, Sushi Cafe set, Unatame (BBQ eel and simmered egg on rice)

I had to take these pictures quickly because everyone's chopsticks were poised over their dishes! They were as good as they look!

Unfortunately, I don't remember most of the dish names.. I had the unatame, which had a generous portion of very sweet and flavourful BBQ eel. I liked how the egg was neither runny nor cooked through. One of my favourites!

We came here for a light NYE lunch on my suggestion. Since our guests are from Vancouver (home of super-cheap and super-good sushi), it's hard to come up with acceptable Japanese restaurants in Toronto (especially Scarborough). I would usually suggest Nami and Ematei (and still need to try Japango, but I hear it's a great secret!) for more affordable fare. Le Cafe Michi is one of the best I've been to for sashimi and sushi in Toronto, and the prices are quite reasonable! Bonus: all of the sets come with cakes for dessert!

Everyone was happy with their meals, with exception to the lack of toro (boo). Next time...

[post-script: I forgot..I went to Japango years ago when I was working down the street and thought it was nothing special. I wonder if it has changed?]

Note: Sounds like there has been a change in ownership from Kaji to Toshi in the spring of 2007.

Broiled tofu with sweet miso paste. I usually get the nasu dengaku (eggplant), but my friend, L., is slightly allergic to eggplant, so we went for this instead.

Not bad -- the creaminess of the the paste matches the smooth texture of the tofu, which is also rather neutral in flavour. It was just sweet, to be frank, though it did have an added dimension of depth to the sweetness.

I recently had the omakase ($45) at Le Cafe Michi, and I found that while the quality of everything served was very good for Toronto standards, the actual menu was pretty boring. ($30 omakase at Ematei has yielded extensive and interesting "what is that?" menus each time, and Tojo's ($50) in Vancouver is still memorable 3? years later...)

Salad with smoked salmon, sashimi (2 of salmon, maguro and hamachi), ikura don, nigiri sushi (maguro, salmon, tai, hamachi, ebi and uni), maki set (maguro and salmon), and dessert and coffee (I chose the chocolate sake cake).

The ikura don (salmon roe on sushi rice) was very nice - not too salty, and absolutely bursting with that fishy-but-not-too-fishy flavour and oily-but-not-too-oily texture with every bite!

I went to Ematei Japanese Restaurant. Very tasty Japanese food

Ematei 繪馬亭 (30 St.Patrick St.)

Japanese Chinese-style fried chicken. Large crunchy nuggets of juicy chicken thigh meat, marinated in soy and ginger and aptly fried. Probably the best rendition of chicken kara-age I've had so far because it was superbly crunchy, even when cold, and very juicy. I didn't get a hint of the ginger though, so not perfect, but good.

...yes, I did write that the braised pork belly with mui choy necessitates it as a "once a year" dish, but when I saw this on the menu, I couldn't resist. My fellow diners, L.L. and C.L., when I proposed this dish, didn't veto me either.

Even more fatty than the braised pork belly and I would be hard-pressed to choose between the two. This has QQ skin that refuses one's greatest efforts tear it apart, creamy fat that dissolves on the tongue and tender meat flavoured with soy and dashi. A serious "Mmm..." dish.

Chewy and meaty grilled beef tongue. Wish it was grilled some more so it would have been smokier with a hint of crunch. It seems undercooked, which it wasn't really, but I longed for it to spend some more time under/over some more intense heat.
