From the outside, they look like many American country churches built around the turn of the last century -- arched Gothic Revival windows, facades clad in white frame siding or in stone, lone steeples rising up into the Texas sky.

Cross the threshold of these particular Texas churches and you'll encounter not a simple wooden interior but an unexpected profusion of color. Nearly every surface is covered with bright painting: exuberant murals radiate from the apse, elaborate foliage trails the walls, wooden columns and baseboards shine like polished marble in shades of green and gray. These are the Painted Churches of Texas.

Built by 19th century immigrants to this rough but promising territory, these churches transport the visitor back to a different era, a different way of life. Inscriptions on the walls read not in English, but in the mother tongue of those who built them: German and Czech. The story of these buildings is the story of a people striving to succeed in a new country and still preserve the values and culture of their homelands.

In 1984, 15 of these churches, with their unique style of art, were listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Once taken for granted, the painted churches of Texas, and the people who built them, are now capturing the interest of designers, historians and ordinary tourists, both in Texas and out of state. This 1885 iron bridge is one of the few remaining in the country. Built by King Bridge Company of Cleveland, the bridge looks like a piano-wire truss. The locals say it is named after the musical sound that it makes when you drive over it.

Vrútecká Pětasedma projížděla v poledne 9. května 2025 kolem bývalého hradla Piesok v km 245,6. Společně s hradlem Dubina v km 249,0 napomáhaly propustnosti v dlouhém traťovém úseku mezi stanicemi Bartošova Lehôtka a Kremnica. Zatímco tuto budovu odvál čas u hradla Piesok, v otevřené krajině Kremnických vrchů, je tomu naopak. Domky pečlivě opatruje dvojice milých manželů, a to i navzdory občasné návštěvy medvědů.

View from a country lane of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church in Dubina, Texas

This church was established in the mid-19th century by immigrants from what is now the Czech Republic. They, along with other Central European immigrants, came to this part of Texas in fairly large numbers in that time period, and it is still possible to hear programs on local radio stations in their original languages. As late as the mid 1970s, Czech was the third most-spoken language in Texas after English and Spanish.

This is one of the famous painted churches in and near the town of Schulenburg.

One of the painted Churches in Texas. This one is located in Dubina. Beautiful weather last Saturday found me traveling the countryside. I managed to see two of the painted churches.

This is a view of the painted ceiling and the sanctuary of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Dubina, TX. This church is one of the painted churches near Schulenburg, TX, and is visited by thousands of people a year in spite of having a membership of less than a hundred people. The Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce heavily promotes the painted churches on its web site and conducts guided tours of several churches in the area.

Þingvallavatn is a rift valley lake in southwestern Iceland. With a surface of 84 km² it is the largest natural lake in Iceland. Its greatest depth is at 114 m. At the northern shore of the lake, at Þingvellir (after which the lake is named), the Alþingi, the national parliament, was founded in the year 930.

The lake lies partially within Þingvellir National Park. The volcanic origin of the islands in the lake is clearly visible. The cracks and faults around it, of which the famous Allmanagja canyon is the largest, is where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet. Silfra fissure is a popular scuba and snorkeling site. The only outflow from lake Þingvallavatn is the Sog River.
