From Ludolf of Lüdinghausen 1406 established Borgmühle was formerly a building belonging to the castle Lüdinghausen. At that time for the Borgmühle own new Steverarm had to be dug out.

After the death of the last knight of Lüdinghausen, in 1443 the mill, just as the castle, to the bishop of Münster and later reached to the chapter. From the renewal of the mill in 1711 the stone inscription about the entrance testifies. Today the mill offers an optically wonderful picture in the heart of the town.

The current mill wheel comes from 1988 and was donated by the home association.

The weather in Iceland is highly variable and on the day we planned to see the vulcano, the fog was so heavy you could not see it from a hill opposite. In the evening with the fog lifting we did follow a well established trail taking you to a hill with impressive views opposite the vulcano. The view was something out of the Lord of the Rings. Dark large lava fields with in the middle the vulcano erupting every 20 minutes or so surrounded by smoke. Seeing this around midnight at blue hour was particularly impressive with the dark oranges and reds.

it is thought that the eruption may continue for quite some time and if possible it is quite a sight to visit if you are in Iceland.

With the lack of opportunity to move freely during Covid 19, I decided to take a series of shots of reflections in the local streams, ponds, ditches and a short stretch of the River Thames.

This is the oldest British aircraft flying in the UK currently. It was a one-off built in 1912. Although it is substantially original, the engine is almost modern, the original having being replaced with a 1916 model.

This aircraft doesn't fly very fast - a cantering horse could probably keep up!

Hope you like this portrait of our dog, Marnie. She takes me out with her every single morning and here she is, focusing hard on something in the distance. I had to grab my chance quickly and get down low, as she's incredibly difficult to get in the right pose. She moves her head so suddenly so I got loads of her all blurred ! She's 6 now, and has been with us for just under a year. She feels fully at home, her confidence has grown incredibly. Loving and intelligent and .. oh I must stop singing her praises. We all love our animals, but for me she's pure joy and yes, she's a real lady !

If you have time, she's best viewed large for all the details.

The Orchidaceae are a diverse and widespread family of flowering plants, with blooms that are often colourful and fragrant, commonly known as the orchid family. Along with the Asteraceae, they are one of the two largest families of flowering plants. The Orchidaceae have about 28,000 currently accepted species, distributed in about 763 genera. The determination of which family is larger is still under debate, because verified data on the members of such enormous families are continually in flux. Regardless, the number of orchid species is nearly equal to the number of bony fishes, more than twice the number of bird species, and about four times the number of mammal species. The family encompasses about 6–11% of all seed plants. The largest genera are Bulbophyllum (2,000 species), Epidendrum (1,500 species), Dendrobium (1,400 species) and Pleurothallis (1,000 species). It also includes Vanilla (the genus of the vanilla plant), the type genus Orchis, and many commonly cultivated plants such as Phalaenopsis and Cattleya. Moreover, since the introduction of tropical species into cultivation in the 19th century, horticulturists have produced more than 100,000 hybrids and cultivars. Orchids are easily distinguished from other plants, as they share some very evident, shared derived characteristics, or synapomorphies. Among these are: bilateral symmetry of the flower (zygomorphism), many resupinate flowers, a nearly always highly modified petal (labellum), fused stamens and carpels, and extremely small seeds. It goes to show that it isn't just we humans that need a drink of water. During the current very hot spell, with bush fires and strong winds raging, my heart goes out to the wildlife as well. This Noisy Miner was going from here to there, trying to find a way of quenching its thirst.

Current

May. Rain has been pounding the Adirondacks for several days, and supersaturated the mountains. Seasonal streams have awakened, runoff and percolation feed the flow, all that water finding it’s lowest level and charging the whole Schroon ecosystem. Some miles below the dam at the lake, the river picks up speed on gradients through boulder fields, now inundated and drowned under the flow. They are immovable, their resistance invisible but for the standing waves throughout the volume. A light mist hovers above the raging current. Standing this close, I can feel the vibration of it’s power, urging my blood pressure higher to match the atmosphere I’m in. Here is spring as allegory to life, the relentless wildness of youth, bursting to race ahead towards that age when you don’t. What I wouldn’t give to truly feel that voltage again, and know the trajectory of where I was headed, instead of treading, spent, looking back at where I’ve come. I stay awhile on the edge of the surge, enjoying the power of the season.

Hooded vultures taken in Masai Mara, Kenya. International Vulture Awareness Day, 3rd September 2022.

It is suspected that this species is currently undergoing an extremely rapid population reduction owing to indiscriminate poisoning, trade for traditional medicine, hunting for food, persecution and electrocution, as well as habitat loss and degradation.

Wildlife poachers sometimes poison vultures because their presence in the skies near animal corpses can alert rangers to their illegal activities.

Because many species of vultures are social, vultures are highly affected by poisoning.

Over a hundred birds can be killed at just one poisoned carcass.

Vultures are the ultimate recyclers. They can strip a carcass in just a few hours.

They keep our environment clean and disease-free.

This beach is popular with surfers, but it is very dangerous because of rip currents. Rip currents are complex, can quickly change shape and location, and are sometimes difficult to see. What to look for are deeper, darker-colored water; fewer breaking waves; a wavy surface surrounded by calm water; and anything floating in the sea or foamy, discolored, sandy water flowing past the waves. Rip currents don't always show all of these signs at once, but they can be deadly.

Ride along the historic C&O Canal in a boat pulled by mules.

The C&O Canal operated from 1831 to 1924 and served primarily as a means to transport coal.

At the canal's peak, as many as 500 boats a season plied the 184.5-mile (296.9 km) canal, which caused a traffic jam in some area.

The current boat was named after the first President of the canal company, Charles F. Mercer.

Last week I visited the wildlife park and although I missed the "Bird of Prey Show" I lucked out because the keeper talked to someone he know and I got the chance to ask for some portrait pictures.
