In thinking of gourds, most people would think of pumpkins, or perhaps the bright colors for the season...but in photographing these gourds, I particularly like the detailed lines that are so evident. What a distinct element! Hope you enjoy!

War and peace. Outlaws and executions. Life-saving food and medical supplies. Justice, and injustice. An abandoned fort, and a thriving hub of life. A waypoint for future Western exploration and settlement, and an end-point for the tragic forced relocation of the Cherokee from the East. Fort Smith has seen it all, and then some.

Founded in 1817 but abandoned after only 7 years, it sprang up again in 1838 and lasted until 1896. As a federal fort, it was one of several end-points for the appalling "Trail of Tears", survived a Civil War battle in 1864, formed a major supply station, and finally became a federal court where many stories and myths of the Old West were made.

Now however, it's almost forgotten history. Thousands of cars and trucks pass by on Highway I-64 within a thousand feet of the fort every day, and never even notice it. Such is American History: so much passion-of-the-moment, followed by complacency, then apathy and abandonment for something else to be passionate about.

Fortunately for those of us who are interested in history, the site has been preserved by the National Park Service. Here in this shot is the Old Fort Smith Commissary, dating from 1845, and on the right as a companion, one of the famed covered wagons that made heading West in the 1800s possible for the Army and entire families looking for a life on the edge of the frontier.

Curious about this yellow building with the mural of a woman painted across its front, I did some research and found out that it is a Coho Commissary Kitchen that offers shared commercial kitchen solutions for new or growing food business needs.

Coho Powell, housed in a heritage building in what was historically known as the Cedar Cove district of East Vancouver, was designed to accommodate bakers and small scale food producers. It is perfectly situated 10 minutes from downtown Vancouver and the nearest access to Highway 1.

This is the historic Commissary Cabin, located in the cabin district of Valles Caldera National Preserve in New Mexico. Once part of the operational infrastructure for the working ranch that predated the preserve, the cabin now stands as a weathered but enduring symbol of the Caldera’s layered past. Photographed in black and white with the Nikon Zf, the image emphasizes the rich textures of aged timber, open sky, and quiet forest surroundings.

Hopson Commissary is a century-old building that originally served as the commissary for Hopson Farm in the early 1900s. In 1944, International Harvester introduced the first cotton picker at Hopson Farm. This plantation was the first in the world to grow and harvest a commercial acreage of cotton entirely by mechanical methods.

Today it's a venue for blues musicians and downhome southern cooking.

This is near the southern end of the Wyoming and Salt River mountain ranges. Late afternoon in the Bridger-Teton National Forest

This building, built around 1900, was the farm's commissary. It was the general store where the tenant sharecroppers who raised "Mr. Ira" Ethridge's cotton could buy supplies on credit. On the outside wall hangs a collection of rusting farm implements.

The Ethridge farm is now an outdoor agricultural museum. The complex is a plein-air paradise. It wasn't easy to decide which of the many weathered buildings to tackle during the hour I'd budgeted for my visit.

Army spouse Adrienne Rodriguez, selecting red potatoes from a bin in the center of the Fort Carson Commissary produce department, said she had been looking forward to the commissary opening for months, and she liked what she saw on opening day. "It's visually more appealing and has a much bigger selection than the old commissary,"; she said. (DeCA photo: Nancy O'Nell)

About Commissary Ridge:

Much of the western border of Wyoming is dominated by the Salt River and the Wyoming Range. After about 50 miles, the two ranges join to create Commissary Ridge which runs southward almost all the way to Kemmerer, Wyoming. For many miles the ridge tops 9000 feet with numerous sections over 10,000 feet elevation. Parallel to it are various other N/S trending ridges.

This scenic and wildlife rich area is little known except to local people. Moose, elk and deer are common. It is a natural migration corridor to SE Idaho and Utah, probably how moose reinhabited Utah beginning about 50 years ago. Wolves also follow the vicinity of the ridge south, but often run into the many bands of sheep.

The furnace was blown out on Christmas Eve in 1928. Dismantling was begun almost immediately. The Commissary and a few employee homes are all that is left.

Scenes like this is why I carry my camera's everywhere I go. You never know when these kind of shots will appear.

Fort Larned was established in 1860 to protect the travelers and commerce along the Santa Fe Trail. The current stone and timber buildings were constructed between 1866 and 1868. Decommissioned in 1878, Fort Larned became a unit of the National Park Service in 1964.
