On February 1, 2019, BNSF’s Chewelah Turn trundles through Clayton, Washington, passing a couple of snow-covered relics parked in a vacant lot along Railroad Avenue, including an old Dodge Power Wagon tow truck.
Silverpeak far right. The white line almost points to Alcatraz Island. The dunes are only faintly visible in the shadow of Split Mountain middle left. I also shot the dunes near sunset on this same day, much closer.
Nestling in the foot of the beautiful South Downs, just to the north of Brighton, Clayton Tunnel North Portal is a truly unique building. Every day hundreds of trains hurtle under this Gothic folly whose imposing castellated towers protect the old tunnel keeper's cottage.

The Clayton Wetlands is fed by a bore that has not been capped. It is 55 kilometers up the Birdsville Track from Marree. It is a very important watering spot for all bird and animal life in the surrounding area.
With the replacement of open bore drains with closed systems, bore drain wetlands such as the Clayton wetland are being evaluated to determine their importance. Those of high importance will be maintained by an allocation of flow and managed by the local community.
A fellow photographer, possibly a Flickrite, nabs a shot of D8568 departing Highley, SVR, 21st May 2022
I'm staying in University City, not far from Clayton, a suburban business district of St Louis. I could have been in St Leonards, Chatswood any similar area where office buildings have grown from what was originally a residential neighbourhood.
Delmarva Central's HA-1 road freight departs Clayton, Delaware behind a pair of SD40 carbodies after swapping its train with NS K64 in the siding north of town.
‘Fox’ KLR 2-6-2T
Waiting to depart from Clayton West in August 2012, ‘Fox’ is a Hunslet-like freelance narrow gauge engine built by Brian Taylor in 1987 for use on the Kirklees Light Railway..
After an overnight journey across Illinois, Iowa and part of Nebraska we literally ran into a westbound Kyle train as the crew showed up to take the train into Goodland. This was our first big road trip with our St. Bernard, Barkley, who was more than curious is to what I was doing. Jul 28, 2019
Sunrise in the Mt. Diablo foothills near Clayton, CA. I hiked up in the dark though some slick mud and sharp wind, not sure if the storm would break enough to get a photo.
I shot something else altogether under some drab overcast and then decided to pack up and continue up a trail to scout compositions for next time. As I paused at this rock outcrop, suddenly the sun popped out from behind the cloud mass to backlight the drizzle. You can't see the rain falling due to my shutter speed, but I was quite happy with the unexpected treat. Of course, after 5-10 minutes or so, it was all over and back to grey flat light.
This is a single frame, 3-exposure(-2, 0, +2 ev) manual blend. Lens is the D FA 55mm f/2.8.
Hope you like it.
BR 'Clayton' Type 1s at Polmadie shed, in around 1970, with D8531 nearest the camera, and blue-liveried D8503 behind..
The class were unloved and unreliable, and some only lasted around 5 years in service.. D8531 entered service in May 1963, and was withdrawn in September 1971, and scrapped in September 1975. D8503 entered service in October 1962, and was withdrawn in October 1971, and scrapped in June 1962. Amazingly, one example has survived, after some years in industrial use, and D8568 operated on the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway for some years, and is today (2022) at the Severn Valley Railway, being overhauled, and has recently been painted in BR Blue livery (which it never carried in BR days)..
Polmadie shed had closed to steam in 1967, but was then redeveloped as a traction and maintenance depot, and is still in use today.
