Thanks to Unrelated Pattens for the Kre-O Joes. They are great and I doubt we'll ever see them this side of the pond. Order (the dog) looks a little bit prehistoric though... which of course is no bad thing!

El Checkpoint Charlie fue el más famoso de los pasos fronterizos del Muro de Berlín entre 1945 y 1990. Se encontraba en la Friedrichstraße y abría el paso a la zona de control estadounidense con la soviética, donde actualmente se unen los barrios de Mitte y Kreuzberg. Sólo se permitía usarlo a empleados militares y de embajadas de los aliados, extranjeros, trabajadores de la delegación permanente de la RFA y funcionarios de la RDA.
La denominación Charlie procede del alfabeto fonético de la OTAN y es su tercera letra. Checkpoint Alpha era el paso por la autopista en Helmstedt, Checkpoint Bravo el paso de autopista en Dreilinden.

Checkpoint Charlie was the most famous of the crossing of the Berlin wall between 1945 and 1990. He was in the Friedrichstraße and opened the passage to the area of American control with the Soviet, where currently the districts of Mitte and Kreuzberg together. He is only allowed to use it military employees and embassies of the allies, foreign workers of the delegation permanent of the FRG and the GDR officials.The name Charlie comes from the NATO phonetic alphabet and is its third letter. Checkpoint Alpha was the passage on the highway in Helmstedt, Checkpoint Bravo pass highway in Dreilinden.

The Allied checkpoint at Helmstedt, on the Autobahn to Berlin. I was not allowed to go to Berlin during my U.S. Army time. People did not have trouble at the Allied checkpoint. That came at the East German / Russian checkpoint, just to the east. A gray, overcast day seems appropriate for this photo.

In the mid 1980s, someone at 246 Pro Coy, controlling Allied Checkpoint Alpha at the western end of the Helmstedt-Berlin Road Corridor, had the bright idea of producing these rather large car bumper stickers, for sale to Allied travellers processing through Allied Checkpoint Alpha. They show the turn offs and count the distance down to Berlin, to assist travellers in navigating the corridor. The badges along the top are, L-R: RMP, USMP, Gendarmerie Francaise and the Berlin Bear.
Marienborn was the border checkpoint at the inner-german border on the Autonbahn to Berlin. Nowadays it's a memorial site with information on the customs procedures, the escape attempts from eastern germany etc.

REME & Coldstream Guardsmen along the inner German border,somewhere near Helmstadt. The patrol is heading towards a field owned by a Farmer Braun ,who at the beginning opted to have his entire farm in East Germany ,but later pressed to have it re- mapped into West Gemany. This field ,nearest to the border, remained uncultivated,as the guards were believed to take pot shots at Farmer Braun,each time he entered this field.

One of the forgotten places of the transit corridors to Westberlin. Now an average customs office at the motorways - before 1990 the allied Checkpoint Alpha.
"Fiffi" war alles andere als ein niedlicher Hund: Eine von vier rollbaren Stahlschranken, die sämtliche Fahrbahnen blockieren konnten. Fiffi war nicht mit Fahrzeugen zu überwinden: Es war ausgelegt Lkw mit 50t Gewicht aus einer Geschwindigkeit von 80 km/h zu stoppen. Und sie funktionierten: Fiffi kostete mehrere Leben und verursachte schwerste Verletzungen.
"Fiffi" wasn't a nice dog: One of four Steel barriers to block the complete Motorway. Fiffi wasn't to overcome by any vehicle: it was constructed to stop lorries with a weight of 50t and a speed of 80 km/h. And they worked well - Fiffi caused some heavy injuries and losts of life.
