Today I met Haribo and his wife Lubybel, two Flickerites who happen to live not far from me. Had a great chat then Haribo and I set out, with cameras, in my Seven. We didn't take a single photo as we just had fun tearing around the lanes. (I think he liked it...)
Lubybel took this photo before we set off. I didn't think to take a photo of her. Doh! Next time. She wants a ride in the Seven too...

With the project now over the half way point ideas.lego.com/projects/87703
I'm working on another version to throw in the mix.
This new version (the one on the right of the picture) is built in a different way, so that it builds as the real car would be. i.e. chassis, seperate seats, bulkhead, engine, half roof, full roof, etc. All modular.
I'll get full pics up of the new version alone with all its components and in all its options in the future when I'm happy with the final product, but thought I'd get a shot of them all together now as I wont see 2 of them for a few months after today, they will be away at shows without me :)
I probably should have said here that feedback is appreciated RE. this pic:

A "what if" update for the Caterham 7 Ideas project: ideas.lego.com/projects/87703
This is using some older now out of production parts, and a few connections that would never get into an official set, so not a refined update for the project.
Its meant more as a taste of what can be done. The sky is the limit for options / possibilites with these.

I've hand cut a clear perspex windscreen for my colleagues yellow model, just to keep him happy :)
Features on both: Removable nose cone. Removable wheels including spare. Poseable steering position.
Extra features on the yellow one: Removable door pannels.
Extra features on the green one: Removable tonneau cover. Removable bonnet. Tubular interior chassis. Detailed engine compartment.
I think its fair to say I'm quite happy with how these have turned out :)
Update: Now added to LEGO ideas after many requests / conversations.

This went live last night, in less than 24 hours it has 550+ supporters. Blinding! :) I expect it will die down and there is a long way to go, so IF you were one of the people who said they would love to see this as a set, then please help support it and spread the word where ever you are able to. Lets see if we can make this happen (and yes I have a few plans and compromises to make this to set standards)
I'm also open to suggestions of colours and models, but one step at a time :)
UPDATE: Caterham have now confirmed they are 100% behind this and routing for it to get through! Brilliant news and lets hope they can generate some extra supporters :)
UPDATE2: Now added a Twitter feed for the project updates and info: twitter.com/Bricktrix_Carl

A further possible design idea for model features for the LEGO Caterham Ideas project: ideas.lego.com/projects/87703
This one incorporates a linked steering assembly, so when one front wheel is turned, the opposite wheel turns with it. (see video)
It also features a working piston engine.
There are 2 connections within this version that I'm not sure of the legitimacy on. i.e. if they are "set friendly" (I "think" they should be okay, but I'm not 100% sure)
The bonnet / hood has again been slightly reworked to improve the stability of connections within it.
So, between the R500 and 620R there are now 2 legitimate workable designs, which can be produced in a range of colours
The features between both versions can be voted upon, as to which ones people would rather see in the final end version (IF) it were to ever make it through.
i.e. The 620R model, but with the R500 linked steering, static removable engine. In BRG with yellow stripes and grey bodywork / black wheel arches could be option no.1.
I'm also working on a 3rd design, which has the long flared fixed front wheel arches, full windscreen and removable side door pannels, again to throw a 3rd option of choices into the mix for the final design.
As previously mentioned, I will try to get a poll together for this "if" we reach around 8000 votes.

Going to be a busy but exciting month!!
A quick complete re-design / rebuild of my Ideas set done in one afternoon and night.
Now incorportates working steering again.
Reduced total height of front by 1 plate, having to remove all the forward technic chassis to allow for this. Initially reduced all height by 2 plates, but looking at reference and plans again, as this is now 1 stud longer than my original, 1 plate lower seemed to be proportionate.
Adjusted ride height of front axle / steering.
Closed rear arches together as per original design.
Shaped and strengthend nose cone.
Corrected bonnet vents and side vents.
Closed gap between bonnet and nose cone.
Re-worked headlight assemblies
Re-worked seats to stop being all black cockpit, added harnesses.
Repositioned / strengthend dash - windshield, altered handbrake to not be so chunky, reduced size of mirrors to be more proportionate.
Strengthend internal floor, removed all floor studs, filed gaps.
Re-worked rear tonneau cover slightly, removing the offset steps under it, smoothed out the rollbar supports. (Will re-work this so they attach to the body, allowing them to stay in place when tonneau removed...when I get more time!)
Added decals!!!..ya know I love em! ;)
See if you can spot anything else that I've forgotten!
I must add, that I absolutely love the standard set considering the limitations that TLG have to work to and this in no way is trying to address what the model should have been....its just not possible within their constraints.
I, however, am able to take it back and put my mark on it, to get it closer to my original designs.
I've tried to keep it more in line with the standard set, rather than just completely re-building it to one of my original concept designs with a yellow colour change....if that makes any sense?
I had to do it first!....not that I've had much time recently ;)
See this, along with the standard set and real Caterham Seven 620R at the Brickish STEAM museum show www.greatwesternbrickshow.com/ THIS coming weekend (1st -2nd Oct)
The set goes live for sale this weekend and I'll be doing box signings throughout, if you should so happen to want one....or not! ;)
Final pics showing a few more details and all the modular options between full roof, with door pannels, no doors with roof, no roof and different screens.
All options are designed to be easily placed and removed.
I'd really recommend clicking through the full folder ( www.flickr.com/photos/bricktrix /sets/72157650361282265/ ) to get a good idea of all the possibilities within 1 set.
I've not pictured or decided on the fixed "clamshell" arches yet. I think these are probably enough for now ;)
Please continue to support and spread the word, that chequered flag is within sight ;)
Another idea to throw into the mix for ideas.lego.com/projects/87703
I've redesigned this so it now builds with modular sections, i.e. body / chassis, seats, engine, etc....along with a choice of windscreens.
I've put a tublar chassis frame within the engine compartment, trying to get the model back to being closer to the original design. Although this is less "set friendly" Its all legit connections, I just think it would be too complex to meet set building standards, but its something else to throw into the "ideas bag"....along with a different exhaust design.
The montage picture www.flickr.com/photos/bricktrix/15682639153/ shows from the base body, being built upwards, you can zoom into the image but there is also this main pic www.flickr.com/photos/bricktrix/16276575306/in/photostream/ to show the chassis / body alone at a higher res.
Pics of the completed car with options to follow.
We are now at almost 6000 votes for the project which is fantastic, so please keep spreading the word and lets get this to the finish line :)
Completely re-built to what I think would be suitable for an "official set" standard.
Everything is now legit in terms of parts, connections, strength and above all an enjoyable building experience :)
The short cut 3mm rod on the front wheel arches will be replaced with black t-bars when I can get some.
I've had to dumb down the detail in this version, compared to my previous renditions and honestly I think "IF" this idea ever got through review, etc, it would have to be dumbed down even more, but I went with this one with everything I could do.
This is one legal option, I will do another with fixed steering as I think realistcically that is the route TLG would go with if this ever "made it".
Huge thanks to all who have voted so far, please keep them coming in and also spreading the word, lets see if we can make this happen :)

The Caterham 7 (or Caterham Seven) is a super-lightweight sports car produced by Caterham Cars, based on the Lotus Seven, a lightweight sports car sold in kit and factory-built form by Lotus Cars, from 1957 to 1972.
After Lotus ended production of the Lotus Seven, Caterham bought the rights to the design, and today make both kits and fully assembled cars. The modern Caterham Seven is based on the Series 3 Lotus Seven, though developed to the point that no part is the same as on the original Lotus.
The Rover K-series made its appearance in 1991, initially as the 1.4-litre engine from the Metro GTi. This engine became the backbone of the range for the next 15 years. The 1.6-litre K-series appeared in 1996 and the 1.8-litre a year later. 1996 also saw the addition of the Superlight range, a range that successfully focussed initially on reducing weight and subsequently on the bespoke tuning of the K-series to ever-higher outputs. Weight was saved by removing the spare wheel (and carrier), carpets, heater, and often the windscreen (replaced with an aeroscreen), hood, and doors.
Various other manufacturers offer a sports car in a similar basic configuration, but Caterham owns various legal rights to the Lotus Seven design and name

After the demise of Rover and Powertrain, Caterham started the process of phasing out the Rover K-series engine and replacing them with Ford engines; the Sigma engine for Road sports and later 270 and 310 models, and the 2.0-litre and 2.3-litre Duratec engines for the more powerful Superlight, CSR, 360, 420, 620 and Super Seven 2000 ranges
The existing range provided by Caterham Cars comprises a choice of two chassis types (the traditional narrow-bodied 'Series 3' chassis and a wider ‘Series 5’). All road going Caterham 7’s are powered by a 2.0 Ford Duratec engine except the 170, the Caterham academy cars are powered by a 1.6 Ford Sigma engine. All models are available either factory-built or as a self-build kit (620 factory built only).

This is NOT yet finished. A few parts in wrong colours and place holder decals. Final shots will be posted as and when all is completed.
I've been trying to get to grips with my camera more (blimey its a science with these things!), so thought I'd put a few of these pics up to show some of the details within the engine....again these are not yet final, but a view to whats going to be.
This version is again like the 620R buildable to what I would consider "set standards" One connection that I'm unsure of the legitimacy on is the outer exahaust manifold. Its certainly strong, but if TLG would allow it to be used is another matter?!
But, its another idea to add into the mix for: ideas.lego.com/projects/87703
This version has linked steering and a working piston engine, with removable top rocker cover.....okay, technically everything is removable as its LEGO! ;)
I will get a poll sorted out for this "if" it reaches the 8000 vote mark, that seems like a good time to start gauging opinions for stuff like that.
I know these pics are not great, but a lot better than my earlier attempts!

No prizes for guessing where this was.

The Caterham version of the earlier Lotus 7 has been around since 1973.
A few more orders turned up and made quite a difference to the looks of this.
I have the week off work, so making good progress with all builds needed to be finished for an unmentionable at the moment project ;)
I decided to play around with putting the removable door pannels on this, as the owner has them. I think it "adds something" to the model, so staying with the choice.
I've bridged the problem of the black rim within the wheel outer trim and the wheel hub, as seen on the front wheel in these pics. The rear wheel has an extended silver sticker on the inner rim, running outwards over the tyre by around 2mm, this succesfully hides that black band that was bugging me.
The main exhaust silencer on both this and my own model, will have the patterend cover over them.
