Although small, Holgate Glacier is active.

On a recent catamaran tour of Kenai Fjords National Park from Seward, I was able to capture several images of this glacier calving small icebergs (known as growlers and bergy bits) into Ailik Bay.

Holgate Glacier is both a mountain and a tidewater glacier, meaning it fills a valley between two mountains, and it terminates in the sea, as shown here.

Incomprehensibly massive sheets of ice, the flow and calving generate an incredible amount of sound, nut unlike artillery fire, followed by large splashes. To get a sense of scale of the glacier shown in this image look to the lower right third of the image for three birds that are flying away from the calving portion.

Better yet, take an opportunity to go visit Kenai Fjords National Park. There are several options to experience this environment originating from Seward, Alaska.

Similar to an image posted a couple of weeks ago; this was taken on a very calm morning above the weir on the River Derwent at Calver.

Icebergs form when chunks of ice calve, or break off, from glaciers, ice shelves, or a larger iceberg. Icebergs travel with ocean currents, sometimes smashing up against the shore or getting caught in shallow waters ( credit NSIDC). We sailed into Paradise Bay it was very dark with mist. Then there was a break in the clouds over the mountain slope. This photo was taken in the mid afternoon. The seas were still but visibility was poor. Off the coast of the uninhabited Peter Ist Island in the Bellingshausen Sea South Atlantic Ocean (middle left), calved blue icebergs from a huge mile long tabular iceberg sported a white coat from recent snow. Rough seas, fast moving grey clouds were a clear sign of very bad weather coming and that our ship had to move quickly towards continental Antarctica some 260 nm (450 kms) away.

After cracks and mysterious noise from within, Margerie Glacier sends ice crashing into Glacier Bay

Ice calving

Ice calving, also known as glacier calving or iceberg calving, is the breaking off of chunks of ice at the edge of a glacier. It is a form of ice ablation or ice disruption and is normally caused by the glacier expanding. It is the sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier, iceberg, ice front, ice shelf, or crevasse.

Todays adventure took me to Shuttle House at Calver, walking along the banks of the Derwent River, came across a small clearing and stopped here for a while admiring the incredible view.

This big iceberg in East Greenland's Sermilik fjord had split apart on numerous occasions and would do so again soon. The zodiac to the left of the iceberg will give you an idea of its size.

He keeps shaking his head and moving trying to get away from the flies.

It was awesome when you hear the loud thunder sound of the ice cracking and then the calving ... An impressive moment!

#DoodlewashJanuary2022 prompt: Glaciers.

Did you know that ‘calving’ is a term used when icebergs break off from glaciers? And now one of the downsides of granulating colors. I accidentally grabbed hot press paper instead of cold press — smooth is not the best texture for granulating colors, lol.

I shot about fifty of these..I'll spare you and move onto something else. It really was an incredible sight and the sounds the glaciers make are awesome.
