It was the approaching demise of these noble machines, the Bristol KSW-type that, in early 1975, started me taking photos of buses. Or rather re-started: I'd taken a few, since lost, during my early, schoolboy phase ...the duffel-coat years. The KSWs had been around almost for as long as I'd been alive and were, of course, an 8ft-wide version of the K-type, a design going back to 1936. I'd always admired them. There was something about the radiator, the tapering bonnet, the trembling expanse of mudguard and the nearside headlight, on its stalk, with the foglamp and foot-step suspended underneath, that deeply appealed to me. I filled pads of Silvine cartridge paper with drawings of them. I started to design buses myself (a favourite diversion during Maths lessons) and in all of them there was a look of the KSW.

With this juvenile phase long moribund, I found my soft spot for the KSWs unstiffened by long years of working on them as a conductor, and when they were down to a final handful of survivors I thought I'd get a few snaps to remember them by. Thus, on Wednesday 26th March 1975, I took a stroll around Lawrence Hill yard with my camera. C8376 was parked up "Delicensed" (note paper sticker in windscreen) having been withdrawn from service at the end of February. It passed to the well-known dealer, W. North, of Sherburn-in-Elmet, the following January. The neighbouring L-type, 2493 (LHY 974) had been withdrawn from the training fleet in 1971 and then passed to the Bristol Omnibus Preservation Society, an association of company employees. It passed to a showman for spares and was broken up at Bishopsworth in 1978. I'm not sure about the other L-type, but it was probably 2495 (LHY 976), also owned by the preservation boys but these days, I believe, the property of a fellow-Flickrite.

So it was the KSWs that set my interest in buses gently smouldering again, to finally re-ignite about a year later when I passed my PSV driving test. I drove a few KSWs during my training, but I was just too late to get a chance in service. Buses were always parked here facing outwards to protect the residents of Brixton Road as far as possible from the noise of early morning cold starts. On the Allocator's board this position in the yard appeared simply as "wall" and I think buses parked here were, in a further instance of the company's solicitude for its neighbours, the last scheduled out of the depot in the morning.

Their brass was moved from the church and later found in an outhouse on Lady Dormers Warwickshire estate in 1924 & tracked back to here helped by information left by a visitor in 1812 & recorded in the Gentleman's Magazine, who described the figures & heraldry. "on the south side of the chancel, on the floor .. a brass figure of a man in armour and hair, and a woman in a veil head-dress ........ " When found it was in a stone slab with indications of another shield; Sadly it was removed and remounted on a board.

A pleasant afternoon was spent at the yard of Westward Travel (South Gloucestershire) on Tuesday 17th March 2009. Not managing to photograph many of there older fleet whilst it performs copious School Duties, we had to revert to an afternoon in their premises. I would like to thank the owner (John SImmons), as he was very kind and full of useful information. Westward do have a very eclectic older fleet, with Tigers, Olympians, Atlanteans, Volvo's and a Leyland Titan, they may further down the line become a very handy source of spares for my Tiger ;-). Seen in this photo are two Plaxton Paramount 3200 bodied Leyland Tigers, the one on the left (A930JOD), was new to Snell at Newton Abbot before coming to Westwards. The Tiger on the right has been operated in the South West since new (TIL4679/A443RYC), this coach started out with Blagdon Lioness, moved to Glenvic of Bishopsworth, before being bought by Westward Travel. I am hopeing to aquire one of these beauties when they come out of service, and they are both MANUALS!!
