The O2C Doeberl Cup chess tournament has been held annually over the Easter weekend in Canberra since 1963, except during 2020's COVID lockdowns. In 2023 just over 400 participated in five tournaments including four grandmasters (GMs).
This year's Premier event winner was GM Hrant Melkumyan, adding to his 2019 and 2022 trophies. GM Ian Rogers who has won the event 12 times(!) provided commentary.
There's a world championship going on between Ian Nepomniachtchi (Nepo) and China's Ding Liren. You might miss it as there's little media coverage outside streamers and chess columnists, with outgoing World Champion Magnus Carlsen deciding he didn't want to defend his title after 10 years. He's still considered the strongest chess player. The press conference in Astana after game 1 was a joke with no actual journalists. Despite that Ding has been remarkably candid, having switched hotels to be more comfortable and talking about being swamped by feelings and tension during the match. It didn't help him as he went down with the white pieces against Nepo in game 2 overnight. That was an exciting game. The streaming coverage is excellent - there are several to choose from on Twitch including Anish Giri with Chess.com and former world champion Vishy Anand for FIDE, and Gotham Chess has great recaps on You Tube if you prefer a short time capsule.
Former top 10 chess player Judit Polgar (left) kept the 2018 World Chess Championship interest high. Creative commentary had spectacular variations not likely to appear on the board! International master Anna Rudolf is centre and FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich avoided chess comment on the position, which is getting very interesting for the World Champion during game 12...
