The "Tek" is the river that undid Chris McCandless. After realizing his predicament he tried to cross the Tek on the Stampede Trail, but was scared by the fast water and returned to the bus, where he ultimately starved. Where we crossed the Tek, higher up near the park road, it is only thigh-high and a relatively straightforward crossing.

"I told you, we're goin' nowhere!"

Alexander Supertramp 1990-1992.

Into The Wild is on tonight at ten. It's my favorite movie, and I keep trying to convince my best friend Lindsey to watch it, but, alas, she has not. Well, she told me it's on, and since I have the movie, I said I'll watch it with her. Now, the coolest thing would be to actually watch it WITH her, but this is close enough. XD

This is for Lindsey and her amazingness, and for the Magic Bus. <3

"...the joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, andhence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun."

-chris mccandless AKA alexander supertramp, into the wild

Two years he walks the earth.

No phone, no pool, no pets, no cigarettes.

Ultimate freedom. An extremist. An aesthetic voyager whose home is the road.

Escaped from Atlanta. Thou shalt not return, 'cause "the west is the best." And

now after two rambling years comes the final and greatest adventure. The climatic battle to kill the false being within and victoriously conclude the spiritual pilgrimage. Ten days and nights of freight trains and hitchhiking bring him to the Great White North. No longer to be poisoned by civilization he flees and walks alone upon the land to become lost in the wild.

-Alexander Supertramp (aka Chris McCandless) May 1992.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend! H.S.S.

Brett at the Fairbanks 142, the bus made famous as the site where Christopher McCandless died of starvation in 1992. Just a few days before we reached the bus, Jon Krakauer (author of "into the Wild") and McCandless' sister had visited the bus and left a book of poems and a log.

just a little quickie. i decided to do a simple one for a change, paying tribute to my favorite movie and book, Into The Wild. 2 layers, acrylic on cardboard. if you haven't seen the movie or read the book, i highly suggest you look into it. it's one of the best (and sadly, true) stories i've ever heard.

Bright yellow between the green and the saturated sky of Lautaro. There he was, waiting, resting in the sun. How many trips will their owners have made? What places will they have visited? Like a lighthouse he called me from a distance his color, his form his classic style. It was perfect to start a trip "to wild routes", right Alexander Supertramp?

Instead of following McCandless' route, which weaves through a swampy lowland on an old road, we hiked in from Denali National Park.

This is me sitting in front of the bus from the movie "Into the Wild." The film crew donated it to the 49th State Brewery (49statebrewing.com) because too many people were dying trying to get to the infamous real bus. If you are not familiar with the story it is interesting and tragic. The movie is based on the book by Jon Krakauer but it is a true story. Here is a page about Christopher Mcandless aka Alexander Supertramp (www.christophermccandless.info/).

fairly certain it's abandoned, but in this area of rural illinois it's safer to not investigate

a pair of tech guy socks knit for my cousin Tyler for Christmas. Named Alexander Supertramp socks because as an outsider (from Indiana) he has a weird affinity to Alaska, and even down with the long hair and scruffy granola beard. He is a bit smarter than Chis McCandless though-thank god.

"The sea's only gifts are harsh blows, and occasionally the chance to feel strong. Now I don't know much about the sea, but I do know that that's the way it is here. And I also know how important it is in life not necessarily to be strong but to feel strong. To measure yourself at least once. To find yourself at least once in the most ancient of human conditions. Facing the blind death stone alone, with nothing to help you but your hands and your own head."

-Alexander Supertramp aka Christopher McCandless

doesn't quite go with the picture but i like the quote.

LONG NIGHTS

Have no fear

for when I'm alone

I'll be better off

than I was before

I've got this life

I'll be around to grow

who I was before

I cannot recall

Long nights allow

me to feel I'm falling

I am falling

The lights go out

let me feel I'm falling

I am falling

Safely to the ground

I'll take this soul

that's inside me now

like a brand new friend

I'll forever know

I've got this life

and the will to show

I will always be

better than before

Long nights allow

me to feel I'm falling

I am falling

The lights go out

let me feel I'm falling

I am falling

Safely to the ground

(soundtrack from the movie)

~~~
Note: I've never been a fan of Pearl Jam, but Eddie Vedder, on his own, is a whole 'nuther story!!! His is one of those voices that reasonates through every pore of my body... yeppers, I am unabashedly in love with his voice!!!
And on another note, if you've not read the book, (Into The Wild, by Jon Krakauer) seen the movie, (screenplay and directed by Sean Penn, and staring Emile Hirsch) and listened to the soundtrack, (totally Eddie Vedder!) you owe it to yourself! I've purchased all three... it is/they are that worthy.
If you'd like to listen to Eddie Vedder sing this song, here is the link to the You Tube video...
The song, on its own, could be my personal anthem now. Christopher McCandless' life, however, was one that most of us wouldn't even dare hope to dream for.
Rest In Peace, Christopher...
