De geschiedenis van dit restaurant begon met een houten kiosk voor gebak en limonade, gebouwd door banketbakker Johan Daniel Jerngren in het Esplanadi-park in 1840. De kiosk leek op een kerk of kapel en werd daarom Kappeli ("de kapel") genoemd.

The history of this restaurant started from a wooden pastry and lemonade kiosk built by confectioner Johan Daniel Jerngren at the Esplanadi park in 1840. The kiosk resembled a church or chapel and so it was known as Kappeli ("the chapel").

1748 bis 1750 wude nach Vorlagen des Baumeisters Balthasar Neumann die Wallfahrtskirche Mariä Heimsuchung errichtet. Die Gestaltung des Kirchenbaus mit seinen zwei achteckigen Fassadentürmen wurde der zuvor gebauten Kirche Stift Haug angeglichen.

Die wunderschöne sich auf dem Nikolausberg befindliche Kirche wird im Volksmund Käppele genannt.

From 1748 to 1750 the pilgrimage church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was built according to the plans of master builder Balthasar Neumann. The design of the church building with its two octagonal facade towers was adapted to the previously built church of the Haug Abbey.The beautiful church located on the Nikolausberg is popularly called Käppele.

De 1748 a 1750, la iglesia de peregrinación de la Visitación de la Virgen María se construyó de acuerdo con los planes del maestro de obras Balthasar Neumann. El diseño del edificio de la iglesia con sus dos torres octogonales de fachada se adaptó a la iglesia previamente construida de la abadía de Haug.La hermosa iglesia ubicada en Nikolausberg se llama popularmente Käppele.
