Newport, Rhode Island gained a reputation as a playground for the rich and is home to some of the most impressive mansions from America's gilded age, but the area has always been home to a working maritime industry, as well, with a rich nautical history. Castle Hill Light is small at only 34', and far from opulent, but it performs its duty with the steadfast resolve of a New England waterman, regardless of the conditions.

The first house was build in the thirteenth century as a hunting lodge used by the counts and dukes of Gelre. The house was named 'Pauwenburcht' (Peacock Castle) because of the white peacocks they kept there. The dukes of Gelre used to wear the feathers on their helmets.

The present house was build in 1905 on the foundations of a house dating from the seventeenth century.

Staverden Castle is build on the foundations of a seventeenth century house.

At the backside of the house lies a small island in a pond. On the the island you can find the tomb of Eleonora. This Eleonora lived at Wildenborgh Castle, one of the eight castles of Vorden. She had a lover, who went on a crusade in the Holy Land. When he was away, another man wanted to gain her by force. When her lover returned home, he was killed by his rival. Eleonora wanted to escape this evil man and fled to Staverden, where a mighty knight lived, who gave her protection. She stayed there for the rest of her unhappy life, always dressed in black.

After her death she was buried on the island in the pond. On moonlit nights, the black lady is seen there, walking to and fro on the island, wringing her hands and lamenting about her lost love.

This double crested cormorant did a few circles of the lake to gain altitude before it finally left the area. Gave me a few passes at it. Didn't nail the focus, but I liked the dynamic pose enough to post it.

In meteorology, a cloud is an aerosol comprising a visible mass of minute liquid droplets, frozen crystals, or particles suspended in the atmosphere above the surface of a planetary body. The droplets and crystals may be made of water or various chemicals. On Earth, clouds are formed as a result of saturation of the air when it is cooled to its dew point, or when it gains sufficient moisture (usually in the form of water vapor) from an adjacent source to raise the dew point to the ambient temperature. They are seen in the Earth's homosphere (which includes the troposphere, stratosphere, and mesosphere). Nephology is the science of clouds which is undertaken in the cloud physics branch of meteorology.

There are two methods of naming clouds in their respective layers of the atmosphere; Latin and common. Cloud types in the troposphere, the atmospheric layer closest to Earth's surface, have Latin names due to the universal adaptation of Luke Howard's nomenclature. Formally proposed in 1802, it became the basis of a modern international system that divides clouds into five physical forms that appear in any or all of three altitude levels (formerly known as étages). These physical types, in approximate ascending order of convective activity, include stratiform sheets, cirriform wisps and patches, stratocumuliform layers (mainly structured as rolls, ripples, and patches), cumuliform heaps, and very large cumulonimbiform heaps that often show complex structure. The physical forms are divided by altitude level into ten basic genus-types. The Latin names for applicable high-level genera carry a cirro- prefix, and an alto- prefix is added to the names of the mid-level genus-types. Most of the genera can be subdivided into species and further subdivided into varieties.

Two cirriform clouds that form higher up in the stratosphere and mesosphere have common names for their main types. They are seen infrequently, mostly in the polar regions of Earth. Clouds have been observed in the atmospheres of other planets and moons in the Solar System and beyond. However, due to their different temperature characteristics, they are often composed of other substances such as methane, ammonia, and sulfuric acid as well as water.

Taken as a whole, homospheric clouds can be cross-classified by form and level to derive the ten tropospheric genera and the two additional major types above the troposphere. The cumulus genus includes three species that indicate vertical size. Clouds with sufficient vertical extent to occupy more than one altitude level are officially classified as low- or mid-level according to the altitude range at which each initially forms. However they are also more informally classified as multi-level or vertical.

No reason. Just posted. lol

The Dark Hedges is an avenue of beech trees along Bregagh Road between Armoy and Stranocum in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The trees form an atmospheric tunnel that has been used as a location in HBO's popular television series Game of Thrones, which has resulted in the avenue becoming a more popular tourist attraction.

In about 1775 James Stuart built a new house, named Gracehill House after his wife Grace Lynd. Over 150 beech trees were planted along the entrance road to the estate, to create an imposing approach.

According to legend, the hedges are visited by a ghost called the Grey Lady, who travels the road and flits across it from tree to tree. She is claimed to be either the spirit of James Stuart's daughter (named "Cross Peggy") or one of the house's maids who died mysteriously, or a spirit from an abandoned graveyard beneath the fields, who on Halloween is joined on her visitation by other spirits from the graveyard.

The Dark Hedges took on worldwide fame after appearing in the first episode of the second season of the Game of Thrones, as a backdrop to the passage of Arya Stark disguised as a boy who runs through it with Yoren, Gendry and Hot Pie while escaping from King’s Landing.

In the scene of the television series, the road is perfectly recognizable, despite some adjustments in the post-production phase. The popularity gained by the road thanks to Game of Thrones has made Dark Hedges so crowded as to generate problems for residents and those who must cross the road every day to go to work or just live.

3135 feet of elevation gain in 3 1/2 miles. And that's all that I have to say about that...

Mildred point is one of the highest viewpoints on the South side of Rainier next to Van Trump (which is kinda in view to the right) and of course Skyline which if you lost your baring's you might find yourself on the summit of the volcano... It is also unique in that it doesn't take you to a lovely spot, nay, it takes you to a chasm, a rocky valley carved and eroded by many a lahar and landslides depicting the more volatile aspects of the Grand Lady. Up and to the left you can just discern the Kautz Glacier and the birth of the creek by the same name as it is expelled into the world via waterfalls and a downhill run that would make a bobsledder cry. The chill wind is in your face and ruffling your clothes all the while the sound of water surrounds you interrupted occasionally by the sound of a boulder bouncing down the steep slopes and the insanely loud CRACK of the glacier melting in the Summer heat. I was alone as I'd set off at dawn and I couldn't find a bird, squirrel, dear, elk, bear, nor human in any pics or in person, it was eerie, just me and the mountain that I'd not seen in what felt like ages sharing a moment.

God rest the Queen, long live the King.

ps. once you see the smiley face you won't be able to unsee it. :)

Blow it up, lots to see in there.

My legs screamed in protest, but the view from the British Lookout silenced them with a gasp. After a grueling 4-kilometer slog from the Francés Lookout, I finally stood at a staggering 1,000 meters (3,281 ft) above sea level.

Below me, the north valley unfurled like a crumpled velvet tapestry. Imposing granite walls rose from the emerald expanse, their sheer scale eliciting a muttered "what the hell?" – a phrase that perfectly captured the humbling beauty before me.

This, my friends, was the crown jewel of the French Valley – Mirador Británico, a hidden gem and undisputed highlight of the W Trek. It's not for the faint of heart; reaching this viewpoint requires a dedicated day of hiking. But for those who persevere, the reward is a jaw-dropping 360-degree panorama.

Pehoe Lake shimmered like a fallen sapphire, dwarfed by the colossal Los Cuernos peaks and the mighty Paine Grande. These granite titans, unseen from other vantage points, thrust skyward like the spires of a forgotten city.

A Grueling Ascent for Glorious Vistas

The British Lookout isn't for the weary. Those seeking a gentler pace can descend from the Francés Lookout. But for the determined hiker, a further 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) beckons. This leg promises a scenic wander through native forests, but be warned – the elevation gain is no joke. It's a 500-meter (1,640 ft) climb on a rocky path, switchbacking through dense woods before emerging into the open at Mirador Británico.

The effort, however, is utterly eclipsed by the reward. From this lofty perch, you'll have a front-row seat to the Cuernos' dramatic display and the surrounding forest of granite spires. Keen-eyed climbers will even spot "The Fin," a notorious challenge for mountaineers.

A Parade of Patagonian Giants

Let's not forget the supporting cast in this awe-inspiring spectacle. From left to right, a parade of majestic peaks unfolds: Cerro Castillo (1,421 m / 4,662 ft), the towering twins of Cerro Los Gemelos (1,998 m / 6,555 ft), the needle-like Cerro Aguja de los Quiquichos (1,703 m / 5,587 ft), the stubby Cerro El Tambor (230 m / 754 ft), the imposing Cerro Cota (2,000 m / 6,562 ft), the aptly named Catedral (Cathedral Hill) at a staggering 2,200 m / 7,218 ft, and the Shark's Fin (Aleta de Tiburón) at 1,717 m / 5,633 ft, just to name a few. (Hover over the photo if you're on a computer to see my peak annotations!)

Nature's Masterpieces: A Cathedral Carved by Glaciers

The French Valley itself is a masterpiece of glacial sculpting. The colossal western walls of Cerro Cota 2000 (2,000 m / 6,562 ft) and Cerro Catedral (2,200 m / 7,218 ft) dominate the landscape. Cerro Cota aptly lives up to its name, its highest point reaching a cool 6,562 ft. Cathedral Hill, on the other hand, earned its moniker from its sheer eastern face, which resembles a magnificent cathedral facade.

To the north, the granite ridge known as Aleta de Tiburón (Shark's Fin / 1,717 m / 5,633 ft) cuts a dramatic silhouette against the sky. Millions of years of glacial erosion have honed this peak into a climber's dream, its steep slopes a testament to nature's relentless artistry.

A Challenge Worth Taking

Reaching the British Lookout is no walk in the park. The hike is typically an out-and-back affair, with a moderate to challenging difficulty rating due to the steady elevation gain.

The full trek from Frances Domos to Paine Grande Refuge takes a whopping 10 hours, covering a challenging 23 kilometers (14 miles). The initial part is relatively easy, but the section between the French Valley's beginning and the British Lookout is a heart-thumper. This is why this vantage point is best reserved for experienced hikers.

A Fairytale Trek Through a Patagonian Paradise

The trail itself winds through a scene straight out of a fairytale. Towering, snow-capped peaks pierce the horizon, their reflections shimmering in the crystal-clear glacial lakes that dot the landscape.

But the true star of the show is the French Valley. As you round a bend in the trail, it unfolds before you like a majestic amphitheater carved

Can't help but wonder what the fish is thinking as they gain altitude and head for the tree line.

I've always been deeply impacted by the loss of rock stars...not those that have tragically taken their own lives through drugs...but those that have now more frequently begun to show the natural evolution of human mortality. Yesterday a case in point. I reckon it's because they have been friends for what is now a very long time...and in some ways better friends than most in that they have always been there in time of need at the spin of a turntable or the push of a button. And as Led Zeppelin said, "Good times, bad times, you know I've had my share." And we, who Steve Miller called "Children of the Future," growing up in the '60s and '70s took our music seriously. And we have been loyal to it throughout the decades. In our minds, nothing has nor will ever compare.

In recent years, the passing of rock icons through natural causes has brought the somewhat astonishing recognition that the future has arrived...and with it all the annoying symptoms of human frailty and seniority. They are losses of consequence, and, for me, cause for much reflection and thought as to a life lived.

And yet, just a few weeks ago, my Grandson entered the world...and today word that a valued contact named Marilyn was overjoyed at the arrival of a Grandaughter. These of course are the gains some of us are fortunate enough to experience. These remind of the hopes and dreams and expectations that we had for ourselves so many years ago -- some fulfilled, some denied. We now pass these on to others, still perhaps best expressed by another rock icon -- always best in his Jeff Beck and Faces days...;-))) Life, for now, goes on...

Three Buddhist monks at the ruins of Wat Chaiwatthanaram in the ancient capital of Ayutthaya.

Wikipedia: Wat Chaiwatthanaram is a Buddhist temple in the city of Ayutthaya Historical Park, Thailand, on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, outside Ayutthaya island. It is one of Ayutthaya's best known temples and a major tourist attraction.

The temple was constructed in 1630 by the king, Prasat Thong, as the first temple of his reign, as a memorial of his mother's residence in that area. The temple's name literally means the Temple of long reign and glorious era. It was designed in Khmer style to gain Buddhist merit and as a memorial to his mother, however Prince Damrong believed it was built to celebrate Ayutthaya Kingdom's victory over Longvek.

When driving around we noticed this Coyote crossing the water body few hundred yards away. With binoculars we found what it was carrying. We kept following it and at some point realized that it is trying to cross the road and go to the other side. I positioned the car such that I can get a better view and hoped that it will cross the road. It did and I took a burst of pictures. This is the first one in the sequence where the tall grass did not obstruct all of the body.

All of God's words have such authority,

conquer all people, showing His majesty.

Praise Him, all praises to Him,

all are dancing with joy!

And we dance around His throne!

All are dancing with joy!

Verse 2

We heard God's voice and have been lifted up before His throne,

to attend the Lamb's feast.

And we can enjoy His words every day, living in God's presence is joy itself.

so the more we dance, the more we rejoice.

On a cold fall day, a bighorn sheep chose to rest on a natural rock bench that had been heated by the sun. It was so content it was chewing its cud while soaking up the sunshine.

You may want to enlarge to see more detail of the sheep but I purposely shot for distance to get a better idea of the setting.

Photographed in the Colorado National Monument, Grand Junction, Colorado.

2024 was one of the hardest years of my life.

I learned so much about myself - strengths and weaknesses.

I broke myself repeatedly to form a more solid me.

I sacrificed true love on an altar of commitment.

I watched generations wither and stepped into the gap.

I gained beautiful flowers in my garden of friends.

I froze in the face of trial and closed within myself.

I created from the depths of my agony.

I screamed in silence for dreams unfulfilled.

I stepped up and made the choice - God over everything else.

I struggled out of the pit of surviving.

I don't know what 2025 holds.

But I know there will be continued pain... continued longing...continued moments of falling and picking myself back up. Moments of showing up for myself in solitude. Moments of nostalgia... and memory... that crush the air from my very chest.

And likely...Grief.

But through it all...

I will continue to persevere as best I can.

I will continue to cry out to God in my confusion and gain clarity.

I will continue to soak up the sun and dance in the rain.

I will continue to find small joys in the birds song.

I will continue to breathe in and out.

I will continue to believe.

I will continue to live.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
