GAWK! photos on Flickr

I'm posting this shot for any of you who have tried to photograph the 12 Apostles from this viewing platform, especially at sunset which is when this shot was taken. If you have, you will know that this is a most unusual sight!! For those that haven't been to this location, that rail is usually completely overcrowded with gawking tourists. It is not unusual for there to be 15,000 visitors a day to this spot, many of them at sunset.

As we look to find silver linings during this rotten pandemic and the latest round of lockdown restrictions, this was a very welcome one - albeit from a totally selfish perspective.

p.s. I've had terrible trouble with the internet and connectivity over the last week or more (due to maintenance apparently), so bear with me as I catch up with your latest posts.

The northern flicker (Colaptes auratus) or common flicker is a medium-sized bird of the woodpecker family. It is native to most of North America, parts of Central America, Cuba, and the Cayman Islands, and is one of the few woodpecker species that migrate. Over 100 common names for the northern flicker are known, including yellowhammer (not to be confused with the Eurasian yellowhammer), clape, gaffer woodpecker, harry-wicket, heigh-ho, wake-up, walk-up, wick-up, yarrup, and gawker bird. One of my common loon babies I followed all summer long, now a juvenile, taking flight. This made my morning! There was a lot of mist on the lake so couldn't believe my eyes when he popped up in front of my kayak when I thought he was already gone. His parents left quite a while ago. After a few minutes of gawking at each other he let off a cool sound before lift off... almost as if he was saying goodbye....

The Mockingbird’s Car Alarm Concerto by Eric Gofreed

In a patch of city trees wedged between parking lots and power lines, a mockingbird practiced his craft. Not on songs of meadowlarks or warblers—he had those already. But on stranger things, it's car alarms, ringtones, and microwave beeps. even the faint two-note squeal of the subway brakes.

The pigeons shook their heads.

“Ridiculous,” they cooed.

The sparrows rolled their eyes.

“You’re embarrassing the species.”

Even the crows cackled.

“Those aren’t songs, they’re malfunctions!”

But the mockingbird didn’t stop.

Night after night, he performed a medley of the city’s oddest sounds, a one-bird orchestra of confusion and clang.

One evening, a shadow slipped through the streetlights,

a feral cat, slow and silent, creeping toward the trees.

The sparrows froze.

The pigeons panicked.

But before the cat could pounce, the mockingbird cut loose:

REE-REE-REE-REE!

(The perfect car alarm.)

BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP!

(The exact panic tone of a delivery van.)

MEEEEEP!

(The shriek of subway brakes.)

The cat spun in circles, ears twitching, tail puffed, and bolted back into the dark.

The sparrows stared.

The pigeons gawked.

Even the crows muttered, “Well, I’ll be…”

The mockingbird puffed his chest, cocked his head, and began to mimic a laughter ringtone, just to rub it in.
