A Hindu Wedding is not simply an exchange of vows and rings. It includes a number of religious rites which are performed. These represent the importance of the bond between a husband and wife. it is rooted in Vedic tradition, signifying various aspects of life that are to follow after the marriage. The various steps in the marriage ceremony include:
Ashirwad (Blessing)
Baraat/Milini [Arriving at the mandap]
Jai Mala [Introduction]
Sarvadeva Pujan
Kanyadan (Giving away of the daughter)
Granthi Bandhan [Tying the clothes]
Paanigrahan or Hasta Milap (Holding the hand)
Laajahuti
Mangal Phere
Shilarohan
Saptapadi (Taking seven steps): [The most important ritual]
Sindoor
Mangal Sutra
Bidaai (Farewell)
Ashirwad is a bengali version of Enganement, where the elders of the families from bride and groom give blessings to the Bride and groom. The tradition is to give Chandan-Fota on the forehead and Dhan-Durba on the Head. Symbolizing their joining to both the families.
The following poem reflects the philosophy of Ashirwad:
"Father Blessed him
and spoke kind words
and he became a man
I heard
A Man of kindness and of care
A man of faithfulness, and being there
Hands laid upon His head
remembering what his
father said
Now his sons and daughters too
would get a blessing
and be one too
Each culture, tribe, and kin
Should endearingly pass down
The Blessing"
BASAN, a part of marriage ritual in some parts of bengal usually performed on day 2 ( the day after the marriage day)at bride's/ groom's place. The main idea behind this ritual is that the bride and groom will perform a puja of the Surya Devata (SUN GOD) in presence of the purohit (brahmin). This will bring them luck and happiness for rest of their life.

Sindoor is first applied to a woman by the husband during the marriage ceremony. The custom called SINDOOR DAAN is one of the most important part of the Hindu wedding ceremony. Subsequent sindoor is applied by the wife as part of her dressing routine. Use of sindoor is prohibited for widows.
Sindoor is vermilion, powdered red lead, applied as a dot on the forehead, like the regular 'bindi' or in the parting of the hair by all married Hindu women. To those uninitiated to the tradition, the application of sindoor may appear ornamental, but to Indians, application of sindoor carry deep social significance. Most of all it indicates the married status of the Indian women. Sindoor applied in the parting of hair is also seen as the visible expression of a woman's desire and prayers for her husband's longevity.
Tradition of wearing sindoor is said to have started 5000 years ago. Female figurines excavated at Mehrgarh, Baluchistan, show that sindoor was applied to the partition of women's hair even in early Harappan times. It is interesting to note that the ancient tradition has still not lost its charm and married ladies still consider it important to wear sindoor and carry forward the tradition.

4ltd 'D~ep: Unpack The Ruling Class PoliticalDiscourse That Seeks to Silence Burning Questions of People's Movements .
Re{:ent years have witnessed sustained democratic struggles and intense people's movements. There were massivewaves of protest against corruption, corporate plunder and the policies that promote it, against rape and rape cultureand for women's freedom. .
Pitched battles have been waged at Nagri near Ran chi and againstthe Koodankulam, Jaitapur, POSCO, Vedanta projects,.
that threaten to grab land and livelihood and endanger safety. Workers have held unprecedentedly successful massscale all-India strikes, and have struggled against crackdowns on labour laws and industrial democracy, most notablyat Maruti's Manesar factory. .
Sustained campaigns to expose and demand justice in fake encounter and custodial torture and custodial death casesand against witch-hunt of Muslim youth are taking place -in the Batla House, lshrat Jahan, Malegaon and MeccaMasjid cases, at Azamgarh and Darbhanga, to name just a few. Efforts of activists have yielded results in exposing.

Even as perpetrators of Dalit massacres in Bihar were set free, campaigns against the judicial massacres have emerged with new determination. And in the face of all odds,.

A Choice between 'Governance' and 'Secularism'? .
A5 the Lok Sabha polls of 2014 approach, the mainstream media and ruling parties are defining the clioice before theIndian citizen as a choice between 'governance' and 'secularism'-a short-hand description of choice between /Modias equivalent to governance' and 'Congress as equivalent to secularism'. It is implied that ifwe want 'governance', we .
I.
should concede that communal violence or fake encounters or corporate land grab are irrelevant questions. And it isimplied that ifwe want 'secularism', we must likewise agree to overlook massive corruption, open plunder, opportunism, and outright repression. .
Must we resign ourselves to this 'choice'? Or must we assert that such a .
'choice' is an affrontto the tough questionsposed by the people's movements? .
On the eve of Independence Day let us instead strive to unpack the official, superficial discourse of 'governance' and/secularism', which empties these terms of any democratic content-and define it in terms that are compatible with.
the highest, most consistent democratic norms, with the goals for whrch people's movements are striving. .
The New Myths of.'Governance' and 'Development' .
In the corporate media's language, 'governance' and 'development' have always meant neoliberal, pro-corporate.
.
policies {supposedly 'good for the economy'), insulated from the compulsions of 'populism' (read democracy). And ifpeople protest against what's 'good for the economy' but bad for their rights to land, livelihood, labour rights etc,'good governance'I is supposed to be the ability to control and suppress protests. .
Itis importantto recall that, until the Radia Tapes and revelations of multiple scams spoilt the story, Manmohan Singhwas feted bythe corporate media as a model leader representing 'good governance.' Similarly, we can recall that until.
very rec~ntly, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar was the media d2rling, hailed for changing the old 'feel-bad' Bih:jr script, andushering in an agenda of 'development' and 'growth.' Today, the new corporate-backed superman of 'governance' is.
supposed to be Narendra Modi. But in each ofthese cases, these votaries of'development' are presiding over neoliberalpolicies that are the harbingers of crony capitalism, widespread displacement, environmental degradation and theloss of lives and livelihoods. .

RSS-VHPs Communal Hate Mongerers.
Try to Barge into JNU -Indulge in Open Hate Mongering and.
Incitement at JNUs North Gate!! .
.
AISA condemns in the strongest possible manner the RSS-VHPs attempts to spread communal frenzy in JNU. Today (17 Sep), under the pretext of a protestin the context of the ongoing debate in JNU on eating beef and pork, several VHP-RSS activists assembled at the North Gate of JNU at around 11 am and held a session of provocative hate-speeches for several hours, disrupting the traffic. During the long hate-speech session, several speakers indulged in the most condemnable hate speech. Speaker after speaker made highly communal and inflammatory speeches loaded with the choices of abuses against religious minorities. Open threats of the worst violence against minorities were repeatedly made, and highly derogatory and abusive language was used. Not just this, extremely communal, dangerous and divisive literature was openly distributed during the meeting. This literature was full of insults against Christianity and other religions. For instance, a booklet published by the Dharm Rakshak Shri Dara Senatitled Yeshu Mein Shaitan Haiwas distributed. As the name itself suggests, the booklet is aimed at propagating falsehoods and an anti-minority frenzy, by deliberately insulting and denigrating religious minorities. .
It is extremely shamefulthat all this happened in full public view, right in front of our universitys gate. Given the provocative nature of the protest, security forces of the North Gate had a hard time controlling the situation. This is not the first time communal right-wing forces have indulged in such tactics.Time and again we have seen them using any excuse to perpetrate violence against religious minorities. Campaigns against alleged illegal immigrants, against forced conversions, against inter-religion marriages are staple diet for such forces. Inside JNU, the ABVP specialises in such communal hate mongering.Throughout the recently conducted JNUSU election process, we saw the right-wing forces at work routinely engaging in hooliganism against women and minority students. Even on the evening of the Presidential Debate, a booklet ostensibly opposing beef eating, but actually targeting minorities was distributed in JNU hostels. It is now absolutely clear that communal forces affiliated to the Sangh Parivar including elements within the campus are together using the debate on Beef and Pork to vitiate the atmosphere in JNU. This is nothing but an organised hate campaign with a divisive political agenda. Communal fascist forces routinely use cultureand religion as excuses to spread division, violence and hatein society.TheyusetheexcuseofValentinesdaytoindulgeinviolence andmoralpolicing, they try to impose dress codes, they molest women in pubs. Such dangerous campaigns cannot be tolerated, and have to be robustly resisted. Moreover, such divisive and communal campaigns have to be dealt with an iron hand by the authorities. Given the well established linkages of elements in the campus with RSS-VHP and other Sangh Parivar forces, who are working to vitiate the atmosphere in JNU, we demand that the JNU administration take up this issue in all seriousness with the Delhi Police and other concerned.
