3rd October 2013 at Cecil Sharp House (Kennedy Hall), London NW1.
Country: United States. Style: Traditional American Folk & Traditional Haitian & Cajun/Creole.
Lineup: Rhiannon Giddens (v/banjo/fiddle/g/kazoo/triangle), Leyla McCalla (v/cello/g/tenor banjo/triangle).
Rhiannon Giddens & Leyla McCalla are members of the Carolina Chocolate Drops (one a founder, the other a recent arrival). Giddens is from Greensboro, North Carolina, and Leyla McCalla was raised in New Jersey by Haitian parents (and now lives in New Orleans). The Carolina Chocolate Drops were formed in 2005 influenced by Black String Band music and in particular Joe Thompson (who I was lucky enough to see perform at Merlefest in 2006). I haven’t seen the Chocolate Drops since their lineup changes. When I did in 2008 and 2010, they were already branching out into otherstyles like Jug Band Music and the Blues. Judging by this duo, McCalla has brough Haitian music, Cajun and Creole (e.g. songs by Canray Fontenot and Bebe Carriere) to the mix, whilst Giddens continues to explore varied traditions (e.g. Scots Gaelic puirt à beul).

5th May 2011 at the Fair Grounds Race Course (Fais Do Do Stage), New Orleans, USA.
New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, www.nojazzfest.com/.
Country: United States - Louisiana. Style: Creole & Zydeco.
Lineup: Cedric Watson (v/accordion/fiddle), Lance Boston (clarinet/tenor sax), Djalma Garnier (bass g), Ryan Poullard (d), Mike Chaisson (congas/ti-fer/rub-board) and guest: Chris Stafford (g).
Creole music predates Zydeco and is closer to Cajun music. Cedric Watson was born in San Felipe, Texas (to the west of Houston). Texas is the only state apart from Louisiana where Zydeco had a substantial following (Clifton Chenier lived there for many years). Watson moved to Louisiana and joined the Pine Leaf Boys, before forming his own band in 2008 to focus on Creole and Zydeco. One other band member, Ryan Poullard, is from Texas.
