It has been the weirdest of years. Having a house project like the cellar has led to alternative Christmas presents this year. It is easy to appreciate a great Christmas Ale (naked :-) these days... and drink it by the Christmas tree... Happy year to all!

"Belgium- Belgian Strong Dark Ale- 10% ABV. This beer is reddish brown with a tiny bubbled white lace. It has a smooth and creamy mouth feel that builds on the palate with flavors of yeast, fruit, and spice." After keeping it for at least 4 years it's even better than before.
Jouluolut is Finnish for "Christmas Beer". Malmgård is one of these smallish breweries that doesn't seem to be able to make a single poor beer; all they brew is good!
I guess this one could be a little bit stronger ( it is now 4,5 %) but nevertheless will I get a few bottles more of this to have on the table at all the food orgies during the days of Christmas.
From the back label:
Our story is one of enterprise and innovation, always looking forward while remaining true to our family roots. After four generations Batemans is still fiercely independent, honesty, creativity and gritty determination fuel our passion for our beers. This fabulously fruity beer is brewed with pale, crystal and chocolate malts and is hopped with English Challenger and Goldings. It has a rich aroma and pallet of raisins, sultanas, biscuit malt and peppery hops. A rich, luscious, and warming ale ideal for winter

Well, this is merely a test round to know what to order in for the real Christmas.. : )
Nogne O Julequad 2017 Belgian Quadrupel tasted so far and it is; as Nogne O beers usually, a fantastic beer! Need more : )
This bottle of home-brewed Christmas beer just beg to be opened. I can not resist such a clear invitation.

Last night I went to Yoga on the Ridge in Roxborough for an hour long yoga class with Theresa followed by a Christmas Beer Tasting with Don Russel, aka Joe Sixpack. At first we stretched out all the tension from the day, and then we took the edge off. Here's a little known fact about me, I hate Belgian style beers. Just can't drink 'em, and last night I learned that its the Belgian yeast that just doesn't do it for me. As many times as I try a Belgian style beer, I just can't get past that taste. Can't do it. The last three beers in the tasting session were Belgian style beers and after the first, I gave away all but a taste of the last two away. Incidentally, the tasting was also a history lesson about Christmas beers, Winter Solstice Beers & holiday beers in general. Since I love history, Joe's lessons appealed to me on many levels. Want to learn more about Christmas beers? Well, you're in luck! Joe's written the only book about them!
And while yoga and beer together are certainly not cliché, taking photos at the tasting is! Happy Cliche Saturday everyone and Cheers to Your Weekend!

Stillti upp studío aðstoðu í bílskúrnum í dag. Notaði catus og 2 flöss.Fann gamla rúllugardínu og smellti af. Búinn að vera með þetta klárt fyrir jól en of gott veður og flensa voru búinn að koma í veg fyir þetta.
Yes I know that xmas is over (and that this is rather late), but I just haven't had the time to bust into the bottles! Like food, I drink with my eyes, not figuring in the fact that we have a stash of wines and other stuff around the house. See notes for details.
A glass of Amundsen Jól served on draft at the Amundsen Bryggeri & Spiseri brewpub in Oslo.
Amundsen Jól is a 6% abv Vienna style lager. It poured a clear, copper red color with a large beige head. It smelled faintly of toffee and Christmas spices, such as cloves and cinnamon. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with a soft, creamy texture. The flavor started out with a fruity sweetness, ripe plums, balanced with an elegant spice character (pepper, cloves) and toasted malts before ending in a mild bitter finish, with some lingering caramel notes.
This is a very good beer, spicy and sweet but elegant and very drinkable. Congratulations to Tom Alfred Øimo, brewmaster at Amundsen, on a well made Christmas beer.
A glass of Lervigs Jul from Lervig Aktiebryggeri in Stavanger, Norway, on draft at Amundsen in Oslo.
Lervigs Jul is a 6.8% abv Belgian style ale brewed as part of the Lervig Brewers Reserve series, instigated by brewmaster Mike Murpy, for Christmas 2012. It poured a dark, reddish brown color with a beige head. It sported a sweet spicy aroma, with a strong anise character and some candy sugar. It had a medium heavy mouthfeel with a soft carbonation. The flavor started out with caramel and anise, before a mild hop bitterness created a half dry finish. Aftertaste of anise too.
The anise flavor was a bit too dominating, but this is still a pretty good Christmas beer.

March and they're still flogging Christmas beer. Well, it's a decent brew and the snow's still deep and crisp and even.
This week's selection is Muskoka Cottage Brewing's Double Chocolate Cranberry Stout (2010 Vintage), which is a 750mL stout with 8% alcohol. It retails for a bit over $10/bottle, so it's a bit pricey.
I'm continuing the Christmas theme yet again, as the Liquor Mart has a vast supply of Christmasy beer, which I love.
One thing interesting about the bottle (either than it reminding me of a wine bottle, even on the bottom) is that it has a swing top, just like a Grolsh beer. However, Muskoka needs to work on this, as the swing top is near impossible to open, and it nearly came apart.
Pouring the beer into glass - you get a strong whiff of roasted coffee beans, ah the smell of morning. It has a nice golden brown (slightly carbonated) head. Very much has a roasted coffee bean aroma, mixed with a Tim Hortons' mocha-all-in one in the beer. It has a very dark chocolate/coffee colour to it.
Taste wise, bit of a creamy texture on the tongue, a nice sweet zing hits your tongue, with a hint of a mixture of cranberries and (dark?) chocolate. This is actually a better mixture than I thought. I expected a chocolate+jam sort of taste, which is disgusting. It's quite nice.
Wow, I can feel the alcohol slowly hitting me, which would be great.. if it was christmas desert. This is exactly what this beer would be good for!
Very interesting stout, one thing I love about it is the Tim Hortons mocha aroma to it, as that's one of my favourite winter pleasures.
It's very pricey at over $10/bottle for 750mL, but if you want something for a Christmas desert, or even for a boxing day snack, give it a try. If you like Half Pints' Stir Stick Stout, you'll like it, but it's not as coffee-ish as SSS. I'm just happy it tastes better than I expected, but don't expect an overly chocolate stout, even with "Double Chocolate" in the name
Fifth Christmas beer for the season and we have a clear leader! This one I would like with my Christmas Eve dinner and I will try to get a few bottles more : )
"Weihnachtsbräu" from the Austrian Schrems brewery, strong lager (7,2 %) in a beautiful amber tone
A glass of God Jul from Nøgne Ø in Grimstad, Norway, on draft at Amundsen.
Nøgne Ø God Jul is an 8.5% abv beer brewed specially for the Christmas season. It poured pitch black with a small, tan head. It sported a peated smoke aroma, with ash / bacon notes. The mouthfeel was medium heavy with a soft carbonation. Flavor started out with a fruity sweetness before the smoke took over, with a peated character that was a lot stronger than I remember from last year. A bit too strong, so some cellaring is needed to mellow it.
Merry Christmas to everybody from South East London CAMRA.
Our organisation is a campaign, but is also a home for beer and pub enthusiasts, and has a big socialising element. Our next local events are; Wednesday 4 January a SELCAMRA committee meeting at the Ship at 68 Borough Road SE1, Tuesday 10 January quiz night at the Westow House at 79 Westow Hill SE22. We look forward to your company, though our greeting may not be quite as portrayed in the photo above.
A glas of Ylir Julebrygg from Ægir Bryggeri in Flåm, Norway, on draft at Amundsen in Oslo.
Ylir Julebrygg is a 7% abv spicy Christmas ale. It poured a clear, reddish color with a large beige head. It sported a rich aroma of ripe fruits, typically apples and plums, as well as fresh spruce and some caramel. It had a medium heavy mouthfeel with a creamy texture and a fairly strong carbonation. Flavor started out with a nice caramel sweetness, ripe fruits and that fresh spruce character reminding me of a green Christmas tree. It finished with a good bitterness.
Ægir Ylir Julebrygg is a tasty Christmas beer with a fresh spruce character that I really enjoyed.
i love the holidays! and it takes a lot of restraint for me not to buy all the Christmas stuff I see....before Thanksgiving. After Thanksgiving, it's open season.
Trader Joe's was the first stop. This year we bought the chocolate-covered peppermint joe's o's and pfeffernusse, German spice cookies. The chocolate-covered joe's o's are AMAZING. I need to buy peppermint ice cream so I can crush a cookie and top it. so DECADENT. The pheffernusse is also wonderful. I love spice anything. And these are no exception. Best part - they aren't even bad for me! Guilt-free cookies! Oh, and we got an advent calendar from TJs as well.
Next stop: Target
Organic low-fat eggnog, and MAPLE COOKIES! I'm not a huge eggnog fan. Never had it growing up. But it's a nice holiday touch to coffee. And the maple cookies were quite a score since we won't be making the trip to Toronto this Christmas. These are the real deal. No idea how they ended up at Target, but I wasn't letting they slip away.
Mulling spices (leftover from last year), gingerbread mix and maple-pecan mix are all from Williams Sonoma. Mom got the last two for my birthday. I think there will be some baking in the coming weeks.
Alcohols.... Christian has a slight obsession with Danish Christmas beer. When a friend heard about it, he mentioned this Belgian Christmas beer as a substitute. We'll see if it's a good trade off. A bottle of Stags' Leaf chardonnay and Hardy's sparkling shiraz round it out.
And, of course, dark, milk and white Hershey's mint chocolates.
Beers picked up at the brew festival in Imbersago. The xmas beer from Anchor Brewing is 2013, not 2014, so that was a disappointment (the year, not the beer). We hope to spend a week in Belgium in late spring 2015 and for sure there will be LOTS and LOTS of beer, cheese, mussels, frites, gaufres, and chocolate on the itinerary. Happy Holidays!
