Rolling under the 12th St. Viaduct on Track 79 of the KCT North-South Corridor is "Run 20" led by a fresh, rebuilt SD40-2 followed by an SD30C-ECO. They're making their way across town with a transfer from the Joint Agency KCS-CP Knoche Yard to BNSF's Argentine Yard. 10/2/22.
Hubble rocks out with heavy metal stars!
This 10.5-billion-year-old globular cluster, NGC 6496, is home to heavy-metal stars of a celestial kind! The stars comprising this spectacular spherical cluster are enriched with much higher proportions of metals — elements heavier than hydrogen and helium are curiously known as metals in astronomy — than stars found in similar clusters.
A handful of these high-metallicity stars are also variable stars, meaning that their brightness fluctuates over time. NGC 6496 hosts a selection of long-period variables — giant pulsating stars whose brightness can take up to, and even over, a thousand days to change — and short-period eclipsing binaries, which dim when eclipsed by a stellar companion.
The nature of the variability of these stars can reveal important information about their mass, radius, luminosity, temperature, composition, and evolution, providing astronomers with measurements that would be difficult or even impossible to obtain through other methods.
NGC 6496 was discovered in 1826 by Scottish astronomer James Dunlop. The cluster resides at about 35,000 light-years away in the southern constellation of Scorpius (The Scorpion).

Near Glaumbær Folk Museum in Skagafjörður, there is this natural wonder outside of package tours. Stefano, who was our guide from Banaca travel agency and a good connoisseur of this island, took us to this impressive place.
In addition, if it was not enough, just next to this waterfall there is a thermal pool with water at more than 40ºC to delight any seeker of secluded places away from everything.

There is quite a difference in winter versus the warm months in observing the eating habits of pheasants. In the summer time unless you are out very early in the mornings or happen to catch them searching for bits of gravel to serve as grit to help their digestion, pheasants often are more hidden as they seek things to eat. They normally have a menu with more entries on it than they do during the winter.
The phrase “scratching out a living” goes all the way back to the 14th-15th centuries when in the older farming communities the farmers “scratched” the land using more primitive tools.
By the 18th-19th centuries, the use of the phrase gained uses beyond that of farming to include anyone who was barely making ends meet in their day to day struggle.
Jump ahead until today and the phrase applies to a broad spectrum of normally physically hard, low paying jobs or an unstable work life.
I grew up in an era when there were only a few government help agencies and can well remember my folks talking about people around them during the Depression and beyond who spent many years on community “poor farms”.
Poor farms were quite prevalent at one time in the US and folks who were unable to work due to age, disability or other factors were housed and fed in exchange for helping to produce food and maintain a farm. Local governments ran the farms as they were considered a cost-effective way to care for the needy rather than simply doling out monies to individuals.
It carried negative connotations for participants, particularly because they were labeled “inmates.”
Poor farms gradually petered out by the middle of last century with many in Minnesota closing in the 1930s due to government programs starting up such as Social Security in 1935 and the growing prevalence of nursing homes.

Walking on the runway like The Asian Queen with the red Goddess Touch Halo from CURELESS, to mixed with floating lanterns and lotus from CA making her more resemble like an elegance fantasy queen.

This is a great charity second hand bookshop run by the Voluntary Services Agency in Aberdeen. It is open most days between 10am until 12noon and then in the afternoon 1pm until 3pm. It is located on the Castlegate in Aberdeen and is well worth a visit for any book lovers.

This white building on New Bridge Street was once London's Central News Agency. In September 1888, they received the "Dear Boss" letter which was the first usage of the name Jack the Ripper, & once that was published, the story blew up even more.
The letter was written by a journalist, & it led to so many more imitation letters which wasted police time & resources.

This adult of the ‘Interior’ form of Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch was gathering food on the shore of Lake Oesa, at high elevation in Yoho National Park, British Columbia. What amazing colours!
Jason Rogers, an accomplished birder based in Banff, Alberta, Canada, pointed out to me that this image shows a distended area in the throat region that is used for food storage and is called a buccal pouch. It is similar in function to other such features like the sublingual pouch in Clark’s Nutcracker [see www.flickr.com/photos/luminouscompositions/51171213280/in... ] and crops in many larger birds including raptors.
