Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class FM-3 94299 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from the book, CB&Q Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment, by Michael J. Spoor:
In 1956 the Q introduced a new series of 60' 70-ton capacity flatcars designed to carry farm machinery. Built at Havelock ( CB&Q shops in Nebraska ) and classified FM-3, additional batches were delivered throughout the 1960's, resulting in 650 of these machinery flats on the roster by 1967, numbered 94250 - 94649. All had hydraulic cushioning, all-welded construction, and tie-down devices specifically designed for farm implements. Note 42 in the October 1971 ORER reads:
Cars in series 94000 to 94049 ( except cars 94000, 94005, 94013, 94018 94021, 94032, 94039, and 94047 ) are equipped with tie-downs for Caterpillar service; cars in series 94250 to 94649 are equipped with tie-downs for handling automobile components.

In this artist's depiction of Trafalgar Square, it is apparent that all of the current inhabitants of this space are respectable (wealthy) folk – e.g. middle-class Londoners out with their families (one man with women and children is flagging down a stagecoach), and aristocrats on horseback. Furthermore, they just seem to be passing through, relaxing on the square or by the fountain, or going about their merry ways. Just looking at the people, there is little that indicates the fiercely political, populist, and active role that Trafalgar Square would later acquire.
But in examining the space itself, one does see some clear political symbolism. The most obvious perhaps is the famous name which the square had newly acquired – Trafalgar – referring to the victorious Battle of Trafalgar (1805) against Napoleon's combined fleets, in which the British Navy under Lord Nelson established itself as the most powerful naval force in the world. Unlike “William the Fourth Square,” Trafalgar had potent connotations, and was not identified solely with the traditional monarchy or ruling elite. It instead would have been more closely identified with the wider British nation in its evocation of an enduring national hero and the British military as a whole – whose ranks were more the realm of common/poor conscripts than wealthy officers. In this image, one can also see two grand, newly erected monuments dominating the square – the National Gallery (completed 1838) to the rear and Nelson's Column (1843) in the foreground (there is also St. Martin's church on the right, but this existed prior) [5].
Thus this newly erected square – which bore the famous name Trafalgar, featured a column dedicated to one of Britain's greatest heroes as well as a repository of some of the most prized national artworks – had become a symbol of the British nation and Empire. The square was a spectacle that represented the identity and power of Britain in both time and space: it was the symbol of a new era in which the British had uncontested command of the seas and the world's most expansive empire, and the square itself marked the physical heart of London (and by extension, its empire). The grandiosity of Trafalgar Square, and its position as London's central transport hub made it a visible and effective instrument of the state in creating and perpetuating a unified national identity. The question now becomes whether the state had sole control in defining this identity.

Porth y Nant, Gwynedd.
One of the terraces - Trem-y-mynydd.
At the far end is Y Plas.
The two rows of terraced houses, Trem-y-mor and Trem-y-mynydd are each Grade ll listed as is Y Plas, the large house for the managerial class.
Porth-y-nant was the name given to the new settlement planned and built for the exploitation of the granite deposits in Nant Gwrtheyrn, which was begun by Hugh Owen in 1851. The village was built by a new purchaser, Mr Dodd from 1861 and completed by a Mr Benthal. The present houses were built around 1875 by the then quarry operators Kneeshaw & Lupton. It housed workers in two main terraces of dwellings which were considered an advanced provision for quarry workers at the time. The terraces are set around an open communal square, together with company offices, a shop and bakehouse. Later, the manager's house and a chapel, commenced in 1875 and completed in 1878, were added. The village, which continued to serve the three large quarries, Cae'r Nant, Porth-y-nant, and Carreg-y-llam, produced large quantities of granite setts and kerbs, particularly for Manchester, Liverpool and Birkenhead, and continued to operate until 1914. Significant quantities of aggregates and building stone were also produced.
The community lived an isolated existence, with produce shipped in and goods shipped out mainly via the Irish Sea, resulting in limited contact with the outside world.
The 26 terraced houses were placed such that each home had an excellent view of the dramatic coastline at the floor of the valley. A shop was opened and thus the village became a self-sufficient community.
The last person left in 1959, and after years of neglect and vandalism, the buildings were revived at the expense of ARC Aggregates as a home for the National Language School sponsored by Dr Carl Iwan Clowes in 1978, its courses beginning in 1982.
The remote character of the centre means that it is difficult to access. The original road down into the village was very steep and full of sharp bends, and was unsuitable for nervous or inexperienced drivers, or for bad weather conditions. The road has now been improved, and has passing places but it remains very steep.
