BLUE-BLACK GRASSQUIT Male Volatinia jacarina. A male Blue-black Grassquit is singing in a pasture along the Vía Cunuco about one mile north of Mindo in northwestern Ecuador at 9:34 AM on May 5, 2018. In this photo, the male is singing while perching on a stem.
Other times it was vocalizing in a way beautifully described by Hugh Land in his pioneering field guide Birds of Guatemala 1970 Livingston Publishing Co.: "Male grassquits display in a peculiar way. A male will leap from a perch, fluttering a foot or two straight up, make a sharp buzzing or chattering 'cheep,' then drop abruptly back to the same or an adjacent perch. This display lasts about one and one-half seconds."
The Blue-black Grassquit was formerly placed in the family Emberizidae but now resides in the family Thraupidae. It has a substantial geographic range, being found from southern Mexico to northern Chile, northern Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil.

This kestrel drifted over and disturbed the swifts. I tracked it until it was completely overhead at which point I was lying flat on the bank wall. It gave me a good eyeball. Worth looking at original.

Due to its low elevation, the trail around Johnson Lake is a fine walk in the early season (the trail is often snowfree by late April). There is a lot of variety in the montane forest of the lower Bow Valley, and this short trail samples much of it, as well as a couple of marshy areas where waterfowl and muskrat are sometimes seen. By hiking around the lake counterclockwise, you will enjoy continuous views of Cascade Mountain on the return along the sparsely forested north shore.
This is the view from very close to the parking lot/swimming area. We probably should have done the hike around the lake, but we were too close to sundown and we didn’t have lights. (As well, we hadn’t had dinner yet and we were hungry!)

Crosby Beach, in Crosby, north of Liverpool in Merseyside.
The beach stretches about 3 miles North-West from the Seaforth Dock in the Port of Liverpool, through Waterloo, where it separates the sea from the Marina, past Crosby Swimming Baths, up beyond the coastguard station in Blundellsands to the estuary of the River Alt. The navigable shipping channel in Liverpool Bay, connecting the River Mersey to the Irish Sea, runs parallel to the beach to around the coastguard station where it swings out to sea.
The beach has only really been stabilised in the last half a century or so. Prior to this at high tides the sea could come in as far as the first row of houses. Dune management, which is still ongoing to the present day (including the planting of old Christmas trees) and the building of a sea wall have now reduced the problems
In the older dunes north of the coastguard station, between the sea and the West Lancashire Golf Club, there are still some remains of the old wartime defences.
The Another Place sculptures by Antony Gormley are found here and, after a Sefton Council meeting on 7 March 2007, it has been allowed to stay permanently.
Other redevelopment is planned. The Seaforth radar tower, which stands at the south end of the beach, will be given to the public and a new building, The Mersey Observatory, will be built on the site. As demolition of the old structure is not planned until after 2008, a light display will be installed on the site as part of the Capital of Culture and Mersey Waterfront’s River of Light event. A million pound scheme was proposed to redevelop the nearby Marina as part of a visitor's centre for the beach and Another Place. The new centre was opening in late 2009 under the name of the Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre, and is also home to the Crosby Scout and Guide Marina Club.

Folks, something told me I had better get on down to see my main man Lou Colombo last week in Fort Myers FL, I played on Lou's band for 2.5 years in Cape Cod at the Wychmere Harbor Club and Thompson's Clam Bar in Harwich Port MA. It was an important time of my life and career and he was always very generous to me, kept me on my toes throwing tunes at me in all keys the music never stopped once we hit. I just saw Lou a few days ago in Fort Myers FL at the gig he was playing at his Daughter Sherri's restaurant and hub Marc Neeley - Roadhouse Cafe, he was at the top of his game, playing great as ever and looking like a million dollars. I am deeply saddened to receive terrible tragic news this morning from Lou's fine trombonist Nelson E. Foucht that Lou was tragically killed last night just 4 blocks from Roadhouse Cafe coming home from the gig. My deepest condolences to the Colombo Family, Lou's Wife Noel, daughters Lori, Sherri, David all his 6 kids, extended Family of friends and musicians. I am totally blown away, thankful that I had the opportunity to know him and play with him nightly back in the 70's and then to see and hear him again at the end of his life, thanks Lou! Here are some photos from just a few days taken by my long-time great girlfriend Jennifer and myself at his gig, R.I.P. Big Lou - Louis Colombo the greatest trumpet player bandleader baseball slugger and golfer ever! I used to go with Lou to the golf course where he had the snack concession in Yarmouth just to watch him drive balls in to outer space. I couldn't believe how far and hard he could hit the ball. Lou would put on black executioner gloves and hit the ball and it would disappear, just keep on sailing in to the sky like Lou's spirit must be now. His music and great memories will live on forever. *Note: Lou called me on my cell phone when I was at the airport just about to fly out of Tampa TPA Airport, he told me he really dug my album that I had given him "NDR SESSIONS Projekt" my first record of mostly standards, it was inspired much by him actually. Lou was talking about the horn players on it, Lutz Buechner and Joe "Jo" Gallardo, he really dug them and he told me we were going to do something back up in the Cape for sure. I was very touched by his call and he had called me on my previous birthday last year, I got all choked up when he told me that. Thanks a million Lou!
