[Official Topic] Sharing to Twitter and Facebook

Flickr Staff

Thea Lamkin says:

Hello all!

There were a few changes last week to how your photos appear when they are shared on these two social networks. To be completely clear and forthright about these adjustments, we wanted to give you a rundown on exactly how sharing to Twitter and Facebook works now. Plus janky screenshots!

Our main goals in redesigning the sharing experience were to a) make sure your photos were displayed as beautifully as possible in your social platform of choice, and b) ensure that photo attributions were clearly visible and preserved beyond Flickr.

1) Twitter

Twitter cards, or previews of Flickr photos within Twitter itself, have been available in the browser for a bit now. Starting last week, they also show up in Twitter-supported mobile clients. This means you don't have to open a tweeted link in your mobile browser to get a glimpse whatever beautiful photo people are talking about.

But we know how important it is for photographers that there are no illusions about whoever put their love and labor into that photo to begin with when people share their work on a 3rd party site. So lets take a look at how we've designed Twitter sharing to do just that.

Screen Shot 2012-12-18 at 5.28.42 PM

As you can see, the attribution here will display not only your Flickr screen name, but also your Twitter handle -- and only if you have connected your Twitter account to Flickr. This way you can get props on both your social networks at once, while making sure that your photo will be displayed in all its glory.

2) Facebook

When you share one of your own photos to Facebook….

Here's where the sharing behavior you were used to has changed -- but note that the following applies only when you share photos of your own to Facebook.

Screen Shot 2012-12-18 at 5.15.42 PM

In order to display such a large and shiny version of your photo within your Facebook feed, a version (smaller than the original) is uploaded to Facebook in a "Flickr" photo album. As this is a departure from the sharing behavior that you all have come to expect, we're sorry we were not more clear about this from the get-go, and understand why many of you had concerns.

If you're not comfortable uploading any version of your photos to Facebook but still want to share your work on your Facebook profile, don't worry. Pasting a link to one of your photos in a post will generate a smaller thumbnail of the photo linking back to the photo page, as you can see here:

Screen Shot 2012-12-18 at 5.17.34 PM

When you share someone else's photo to Facebook…

Screen Shot 2012-12-18 at 5.14.35 PM

As you can see, you'll still be able to get a sense of what the photo looks like in a smaller format, and the original photographer will be mentioned in the associated text. And of course, this will link directly back to the photo page of their work.

We hope this was helpful. Your photos are unbelievably important to us, and we always work to make sure that we're striking a balance between showing them in their best light and making sure you, the photographer behind the lens, are always part of the conversation.

I am having a terrible time trying to get the new iPhone app to share my Flickr photos on Facebook. I try to set up the app to share and I receive the message "Access Needed - To continue using your Facebook account, please give Flickr access to your account in the device Settings or the Facebook app." There is no Flickr app listed in the Device Settings nor can I find any Flickr setting in the Facebook app. Please help as I wish to remove Instagram from my phone and become a Pro user, but this needs to work first. Thanks

Since we're on the subject of sharing on Facebook, is it possible to address the issue of a lack of a proper thumbnail on Facebook while sharing there with Flickr guest passes and sharing Flickr slide shows. This was brought up in the past but elicited advice that the matter be taken up with Facebook as it had to do something with how the link 'parses there', whatever that means.

Not much joy has resulted from raking up the subject on their community forums.

I recall Flickr guest passes when shared on G+ had proper thumbnails. That isn't the case on Facebook.

Can this be shortened to "We no longer SHARE with Facebook - We GIVE your photos to Facebook".

Thanks for finally making this an 'Official' topic (although you should have put this on the blog for transparency.) Please don't get into bed with Facebook. Is there any chance of adding into the iOS app an option to "Share a Link" rather than "Send file to Facebook" when sharing from the app? I for one care less about things looking shiny on facebook and more about the fact that my Flickr images don't reside on a facebook server.
Posted ages ago. ( permalink )

Neil Fitzgerald says:

Actually, for anyone interested, if you "Share on Facebook" then go to Facebook and manually delete the image Flickr sends to Facebook from the "Flickr album", Facebook then changes that status update from a photo to a link back to your Flickr stream (so as it was before).

You can simply grab the link and then paste it on Facebook. No need to post, and delete to get the link.

Edit: Oh, I see you're talking about the new app for iOS 6.

The rest of us can just share the link

Is anything going to put where users who don't frequent the Help Forum will see it? I still think that some language when you use Share saying that a photo will be copied over will be a good heads-up for both users who do and users who don't want to copy their photos over. Only a few people will see this here, and infrequent users will miss a blog post if there is one coming.

This isn't working for me (In Australia) Sharing to FB isn't creating a new album on FB, whether I share from the ios app, or the flickr site.

Sharing from the web only produces a small thumbnail in my timeline and feed, sharing from the app produces a small thumb in my timeline, and a larger square one in my feed. Neither option is producing, or adding to a new FB flickr album. Hmm.

Neil Fitzgerald says:

It used to be easy to share via the web interface too. You just click on the (already configured) "Share on Facebook" icon above a photo. Now that button doesn't share, it "sends" the image to Facebook. It was noted before that you can manually share a link when logged into Facebook. I'm just disappointed that a so called improvement to a feature turns out to be the complete opposite of that.

Agree that the language being used is misleading. Don't expect a blog post about something negative like this.

It is very easy, yes. When you're on the photopage for the image you want to share, copy the URL from your browser's address bar. Paste that URL on Facebook.

Well for now, I've disconnected my Flickr and Facebook accounts. Currently a pointless feature for people like me that purposely avoid uploading images to Facebook. It's really creepy that they use face detection on all photos stored on their servers. As the Flickr guidelines state:

Nice, thanks for updating the sharing to behave on Facebook as other photo sites have done.

BUT

* location information is not added to shared photos on Facebook and Flickr photos doesn't appear on my Facebook map (Foursquare and Instagram post location information too). I gave "public" privacy setting to Flickr app, but I was able to post only to friends, so if friends is default option, posting the location wouldn't be the problem. Maybe make an option when posting, so people could choose.
* would be nice if the date taken is shared with FB too, because FB is about timeline, so it would make more sense if photos appear on timeline when they were taken. Right now, I had to do this manually.

I'm having a hard time getting my pics to upload to FB from my Android flickr app. When I try to post, in the app, it says that Activity Updates are OFF, whereas when I see it on the website, it says on. And the images uploaded are small on fb, not a great regular photo upload.

When I do upload to both twitter and facebook, it says that it failed to upload to FB, and then eventually I see a small picture on my feed.

I have seen other people who do have the bigger pictures, as you state above, but can't figure out how to do that, unless I upload to fb directly (which I'd rather not do).

The Android app does not upload the photo to Facebook; it only shares a link. To upload to Facebook from here, share via the web or the iPhone app. Presumably when the Android app gets updated, it will have the new behaviour.

thanks for the great info about how the images are being displayed in Twitter - mine are all showing in Tweets just fine, but none show up in the user gallery/recent images section on my Twitter profile page when viewed on the web. Do I need to do something with the Flickr app settings to make this happen when I tweet from it? Or do I need to reset something in Flickr? I notice that this doesn't happen when I view the @flickr account on Twitter - all recently tweeted photos appear as thumbnails just fine.

Can you explain in which way it is too cumbersome? All you have to do is:

1. Copy the URL of the photopage from your browser's address bar.
2. Paste it into a status update on Facebook.

Done.

Sharing a public photo link is easy (assuming you've already done the additional steps of logging into Facebook, which wasn't required before).

Two possibilities:
a) Your Flickr default upload privacy setting is "Private". Change that here
www.flickr.com/account/prefs/photoprivacy/?from=privacy

If that's already "public" then
b) Photoshelter has decided that anything you share from their site is private. You'll need to talk to them about the issue.

KevReillyUK says:

Unlike many people here I'm not too bothered by the new Flickr/Facebook sharing system for individual photos; any individual photos I take tend to be frivolous or unimportant in the grand scheme of things, and in fact most of those go only to Facebook. Flickr is for the more serious stuff, and that means sets.

Which brings me to the problem, one that tarmo888 alluded to earlier. If I cut-and-paste the URL of a Flickr set into Facebook as a status update, I get a small thumbnail, a link, and any text I add. This is far from visually impressive, but because it appears as a Facebook 'event' it does give me the ability to change the date that it appears on the Facebook timeline. So if I upload a set of photos from October 3rd 2005, I can have it appear on October 3rd 2005 in my timeline.

On the other hand, if I link my Facebook and Flickr accounts and use the Flickr 'share' button to link a photo set to Facebook, my friends see a much nicer posting on their news feeds. It is pre-formatted and the thumbnail image is significantly larger. The downside is that I'm unable to change the date of such posts, even if I use the View All Activity option from within Facebook. All I'm able to do is to hide the post from my own timeline, or delete it.

Is there any way Flickr can change the nature of links that are automatically shared with Facebook such that changing the date becomes possible, or is this a limitation of the way Facebook works with third-party apps and services?

I like Facebook's timeline layout, but would rather keep the bulk of my photos on Flickr. If I could attach button-shared Flickr sets with their larger thumbnails and also edit the dates within Facebook it would be ideal.

I think it's the way Facebook handles 3rd party apps. I've just checked &, as with Flickr, posts from Instagram to Facebook won't let you change the date in the way you can with posts / photos/links etc,. posted while you're actually in Facebook at the time.

To be fair to them, they'd clearly rather you did things directly in Facebook (as you'll get to see facebook ads etc., while you're there), so you can't really blame them for giving less functionality when you've used a 3rd party to do things.

As you are trying to change the date on the Facebook side, wouldn't it be better to ask them? Flickr doesn't control how Facebook works.

If I cut and paste the raw Flickr URL into Facebook, I can change the date of the 'event' it creates just as I could with any other URL. If I link the accounts using Flickr's linking feature to Facebook's API, then use the Share button provided by Flickr on the Flickr site to share a set, I cannot change the date.

As I see it this is certainly as much a Flickr issue as it is a Facebook issue.

In an ideal world Flickr would offer the ability to extract the date (or, in the case of a set, the most common date) right from within the metadata and provide this to Facebook so the links automatically populated in the correct place on the timeline. But I realise that not only might this be beyond the capabilities of Facebook's API, it would be a big ask of Flickr's coders even if it wasn't.

emmadukew:

Absolutely. I was just puzzled as to why it worked one way but not the other. I guess when you use a simple cut-and-paste Facebook's system doesn't concern itself as to whether or not the URL belongs to a competitor, whereas using the API it's a bit more obvious (and, as you say, bypasses the adverts).

I guess I'll have to stick to the small thumbnails. Let's hope Facebook don't start filtering the editing options based on the domain of incoming pastes.

So sharing sets seems to be completely screwed up.
I uploaded photos to Flickr on my PC. I then copied and pasted the link for the 'set' onto Facebook. Facebook's totally happy with that, gives me the page info and thumbnail, and the link works perfectly on my PC.
A friend clicks on the link on their iPhone, and they get a Flickr page with an error message, 'Page not found'.
It works fine for individual photos, but not for sets. Now if I share a set on Facebook, I have to accept that people using computers will see them fine and people using smartphones probably won't. That's nuts, right?

Flickr have now resolved this problem, which was due to their redirection code being confused by some rather arcane modifications Facebook made to their in-app browser:

www.flickr.com/help/forum/en-us/72157632312335314/#reply7...

Ask your friends to retry your links and they should be OK.

Thanks. This is good. However, it's still not quite right. Because sure, that takes the user to my Flickr set, but as soon as they click on a picture, they're in the Photostream rather than the set. So a set like my 'Portfolio', where the photos are sprinkled throughout my Photostream, becomes a nightmare to browse.

I notice when I click on a picture from a Set like this, the page has a little '...' in the top right, and when I click on *that* and go to Sets, I can then find and browse the Set as I'd hope to. Is there any way that *this* could be the version of the Set the links go to on a mobile device, instead of the one that keeps spitting the user back out to the Photostream?

I have my settings configured to automatically post new uploads to Facebook ("Activity Updates: On" under "Sharing and Extending") and I'm still only seeing small thumbnails on Facebook. I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting; is there something else I have to do to get it to show up as a large picture?

Why can they not, in the above case, "browse the Set as you'd hope them to" after they are taken to a set (but before they click on a picture and get taken to your Photostream)?

Or in the 2nd case, how is it different such that clicking on a picture does not take them to your Photostream, as it does in the 1st case?

Are there two different page types for Sets in use here? (It's an honest question, I don't use Flickr mobile so I don't know what you might be seeing that's different than what I see.)

The setting you are using has not been changed by the new feature. The ONLY way that you get a large photo on your Timeline (and a copy of the photo uploaded to Facebook) is to go to an individual photo page and select "Share."

So, I take it that the fact that this is no longer pinned means that only the handful of people who see it here will know that they can copy a photo to Facebook, or that when it shows up large it's also copying over. That's really, really, really not okay, Flickr. So much not okay.

I think this is to do with the way Flickr displays is pages on the iPhone, and goes beyond the original Facebook app problem.

If I open a Flickr link from the Facebook app on iPad, I see more or less what I would see on a desktop browser. And although a caption states that "This photo belongs to xxx's photostream", navigation is limited to the specific set if I use the thumbnails under "This photo also appears in..."

On the iPhone things are a bit different, with just one large thumbnail and two smaller navigation thumbnails with symbols superimposed. But, again, a quick test has shown that if I use the > or < thumbnails to navigate, they won't let me navigate outside of the set.

In both cases clicking on the larger photo thumbnail invokes the "Lightbox" view which lets the user scroll left or right within the set in a similar way to viewing photos in the iOS Photos app.

I have only tried this with a Guest Pass URL to a standard set so I can't test with a setup like your Portfolio, but I can't imagine why one set would be treated differently to any other, even if that set contains random photos from elsewhere.

I think it's just down to the way Flickr behaves when it detects an iPhone. I've noticed that if I use the Facebook browser to open the URL in Safari, it opens a full-browser URL beginning with www.flickr.com and ending with /in/set- and the set ID. But if I do the same on the iPhone, I get a mobile URL beginning with m.flickr.com but without the /in-set- identifier.

You could ask Flickr about changing this behaviour but I rather suspect they may just ask you or your friends to install the Flickr iOS app.

+1

As a minimum, this should be explained in the FAQ about sharing.

Love it or hate it, this is a big thing. It should be announced in a Flickr blog and, because it creates a copy on Facebook, there should be a banner and/or some sort of warning when we attempt to share to Facebook that warns what happens. (That warning could have a "don't show me again" checkbox to allow us to disable it.)

Yep, it's definitely beyond the Facebook app problem, but still part of the letting-my-Facebook-friends-look-at-my-Flickr-sets problem.

Can you retry your iPhone test, because I've tried it multiple times with different sets, and it's the Photostream it navigates through, NOT the Set.

My 'Portfolio' isn't set up in any weird way - it's just a good example as it is quite obvious that the navigation is going to the Photostream instead of the Set because of the sequence.

My explanation about the '...' and going into Sets from there shows that the m.flickr.com version of the site can and will happily display sets properly. But I think the problem probably does lie in that bit where the '/in-set-' bit is stripped out.

What happens when I post this link on Facebook
www.flickr.com/photos/donkeyjacket45/sets/721576298048955...
is that that page gets displayed. When I click on a picture, though, I get redirected to
m.flickr.com/#/photos/donkeyjacket45/7229715346/
when I actually want to be on
m.flickr.com/#/photos/donkeyjacket45/7229715346/in/set-72157629804895506/
and ideally would have been redirected to the mobile site a stage earlier, to this 'set' page
m.flickr.com/#/photos/donkeyjacket45/sets/72157629804895506/

All the right bits are there, the mobile site redirects just aren't right. The set *doesn't* redirect to the mobile version, and the photo redirects, but loses the set information.

The Flickr app is irrelevant.

This really should have been an annoucement emailed out to all users. I'm really disappointed that I've only discovered this after realising that Flickr is uploading photos to my Facebook, rather than posting links to my photos. I pay for a pro account for a reason - to keep my photos secure. If I wanted to put my photos on Facebook (which I can do for free), I would do so - I certainly don't need Flickr to do it for me. Being able to click one button and have Flickr share a link on Facebook was invaluable to me. I have to copy a link from Flickr on my phone, log in to Facebook and then paste the link in. I'm very unhappy.
