I'm pleased to announce that I have chosen a printer (actually a printing service) for the squared circle poster project - a non-commercial project to produce some very cool collaborative mosaic posters for Flickr members.

I'll be doing a print-run in early April, and the posters should be ready to ship in the beginning of May.

The reason for the delay in printing is so that I can time this to coincide with the "day in the life" poster project (the next DILO is March 21 - this will provide a week or two to collect images for that poster). By printing both posters (actually 4 posters) overseas, I'll be able to significantly reduce the printing costs, but there is some delay involved.

I'm currently planning on printing 4 posters. The posters will be:

Squared Circle Mosaic: Giant Peach
1) A 64 x 64 tile "Giant Peach" containing 4096 squared circles. The names of all the contributers will be on this poster (below the square), as well as the URL of a webpage containing a mapped version of the poster with links to the larger photos. This image was the favorite in an informal poll I conducted a few weeks ago.

EDIT: Weeks after writing this, I decided to use smaller numbers of tiles for the first 3 posters, because it makes them look much better (the tiles are easier to make out).

Squared Circle Mosaic: Scaling Hue Twist
2) A Fibonacci Spiral containing an even larger number of licensed squared circles (however many are available in early April), with more poster real-estate given to heavily favorited circles (big circles are prettier). This poster will contain the URL of a webpage containing attributions. This was the second-most favorite.

Mosaic: Dec 21, 2004
3) The next "Day in the Life" mosaic, all licensed photographs taken March 21, 2005, arranged in 1/2 hour increments from top to bottom. This poster will contain the URL of a webpage containing mapped attributions. Please participate in the next DILO and get on this poster too!

4) To be announced. A Flickr-related project that I think you're gonna like.

Each poster will be printed at 350 DPI on glossy paper at 27 x 40 (a standard poster size, suitable for cheap frames). This is not as large as I originally hoped, but I think you will like the price, which is much lower than I had originally hoped for:

The posters will be $4 each, or $12 for the set of 4. There will be an initial limit of 2 sets per person to make sure every contributor can get one. I'll remove this restriction later if I don't run out.

This price covers the approximate printing costs (divided by the estimated head count) but does not cover shipping & handling. I have not yet determined the S+H prices, but I expect them to be similar to EBay. I'm shipping out of California - shipping prices will be lowest for contintental US, a little higher for Canada (sorry Flickr employees!) and higher elsewhere. I should be able to ship 4 posters in one tube (the posters are coming to me prewrapped).

To save on overseas shipping, I can ship posters in larger quantities to overseas "hubs", but the hub coordinators will need to arrange local ordering & shipment, and then order in bulk from me. Here is a discussion on overseas ordering where you can work on setting this up.

In April, I'll put up a (paypal) ordering page for posters, as well as previews of the final artwork - the thumbnails above are representative samples, but do not contain the final set of tiles, nor the poster text.

Thanks for your support in making this project happen! Remember to use Creative Commons licenses on your images if you want them to appear on these posters!

Dances a little dance of joy.
Muffet Posted 20 years ago
This is very cool, and the cost is surprisingly low! Yippee!
DogFromSPACE Posted 20 years ago
Wheeee!!!!! Good stuff! Bravo Jim!
I'm all about gettin 2 sets.

On frames: www.americanframe.com is a great place to buy custom frames online. They have many different styles, and the simple metal "radius" frame, which I personally like very much, is quite cheap. ($10.50 for a 27X40 frame - more if you want plexi and/or a mat board)

Fixed. Thanks.

your first link on overseas shipping is incorrect, it backlinks to this page.

I am very happy to hear this news!
Thank YOU!

Woo hoo! That's great news, jbum. The price is right! ;)

So...when are you planning to announce #4?

WoooT!!!!

Jbum, I still have an email from you in my inbox I never replied to. My reply was going to be that our prospective print provider didn't do the kind of thing we were looking for, but I never got around to it. I am sorry!

Thanks for getting this together, you are the kewlest!

Please consider my personal favorite (the most favorited one overall?) for the #4 slot:

Squared Circle Mosaic: Original Proof-of-concept

(Failing that, another Fibonacci spiral on black without any swirlin'.)

Although that image is the most favorited of mine, it got most of those votes before I actually started counting (for the poster project) - it was one of the first mosaics I made - it's actually number 3 in terms of poster count.

The #4 poster is by a guest contributor who has asked to go nameless for the time being (oh I do love a mystery, who could it be?), so no more fibonaccis.

I *do* like the image you suggested Stewart, but one of the reasons it looks good is because there are only about 3000 tiles in it (that's a nice optimal number for mosaics, it turns out - above 4000 they get less interesting). So I want to try to increase the number of tiles by scaling the images a little differently.

The second thumbnail above, is probably the least representative of what that poster's actually gonna look like, because I haven't written the program to make it yet. The main thing it illustrates is that inner circles will be smaller. My plan is to make the size of the circles somewhat proportional to their 'favoriteness', and make the large circles a bit larger, so you can really see the nicer tiles well (in the other posters, the tiles are gonna be pretty darn small).

It may not have a spiral (since I'm probably gonna put a spiral on the DILO poster, and who wants too much of a good thing).

At any rate, the #2 poster is the one where I'm gonna give myself a little more free reign. I'll put up some previews for #2 in March.

I like the favorite idea, but the hue twist with desaturated images smaller was a great one... maybe you could mix the elements a bit?

striatic Posted 20 years ago
i love the one stewart selected .. the fibonacci with banding instead of spiraling.

but i guess with the "favouriteness" determining order, banding by colour wouldn't be feasible.

jbum has shared a very, very small tidbit of what poster 4 will be, and i assure you guys it really is something pretty special.
MOD
krazydad / jbum Posted 20 years ago
Banding by color is indeed feasible, because the favorites will tend to clump within large groups (all with the same number of votes: 3 votes, 4 votes etc.) and within the groups, I can band by color). I used a similar trick to get the spiral on the DILO poster, even though the images are grouped by 1/2 hour intervals - within the 1/2 hour clusters, I swapped them around.

Heck, if we wanted to, we could put hamsters eating waffles on this thing. Hmm...

The outer rim will have a lot of singletons though (the most popular images will tend to have unique vote counts).
Auntie P Posted 20 years ago
Fantastic, and at a great price too!
pberry Posted 20 years ago
Bravo, jbum! Bravo!
Metahari Posted 20 years ago
So do we need to change our posts in the headcount thread? I'd love a whole set if they're only $12.
matizi Posted 20 years ago
Me too! Great job jbum! What a treat!

krazydad / jbum Posted 20 years ago
You can edit your post in the headcount thread, if you like, but it isn't strictly necessary.

I'll get more precise numbers from you when I take orders in April.

I'm assuming lots of folks are gonna order the whole set.
ZenOptic Posted 20 years ago
Woo Hoo...
pberry Posted 20 years ago
Yeah, $12...why not?
only an egg Posted 20 years ago
ditto.

Quick question:

I've only got one picture in the group pool. I'm interested in getting a poster but is there anyway I can find out if my picture is included in the group? I've got the right CC license set up.
admin
striatic Posted 20 years ago
i think jbum is trying to manage the poster so that everyone with a properly licensed photo in the pool will have at least one photo on the poster.

maybe we should publish a list of photos and their owners before people start doing the final ordering?
MOD
krazydad / jbum Posted 20 years ago
Sounds like a plan.
évoluons Posted 20 years ago
Wow! And so inexpensive, congrats guys! Is there some sort of cut off date for poster worthy squared circle submissions?
neilbruder Posted 20 years ago
Indeed, a fine plan. Thanks striatic and jbum.

Looking forward to the poster.

I'll be producing the posters in early April. I will try to insure that everyone who contributes to the pool gets at least one image in a poster.

Don't forget about the "Day in the Life" group as well.

DogFromSPACE Posted 20 years ago
Hey Jim, what were you thinking for the design of the rest of the poster? (as far as the list of names)

Maybe a medium gray text at the bottom on a black background?

I'm almost tempted to suggest something involving a mosaic of everyones icons, but that would surely detract from the poster itself. (though it may be neat as its own image)
BenODen Posted 20 years ago
So, how're we doing JBum? What's the current status? Thanks very much for spearheading and getting this done!

Oh, and I know it complicates service or what not, but maybe the order form should have a check mark for "Extra" sets beyond the first, that way you have the orders made and in the bag if there is enough demand for a second run? Understandable if everything is all set in stone and this won't happen, but it just occurred to me as a way to be able to predict additional demand...

Hi Ben,

I have sent reduced size versions to the printer, and they are currently reviewing them - I may need to make some minor changes to improve print quality.

Currently, it looks like printing will occur in early May. I'll put up an ordering page at that time - I'm still working out how I'm going to deal with the complexities of international shipping.
