The abalone signature Icon on this Berkowitz Guitar is impeccable, like the rest of the guitar ( my apologies for my quick shot, Geez, guess we'll have to have Mike back on the show to get a good shot!).
Mike Golay was today's guest and he is profoundly gifted and well studied both a player and a composer. His site (which he has maintained since 1996) is deeper than most and broad in spectrum both musically and otherwise.
Today he performed pieces from his latest recording Across the Bridge all instrumental, all guitar pieces like

My fave is Welcome To Funkstown which is a tune where he and Al Petteway play. Al has been a mentor and teacher so his involvement in the recording of Across The Bridge was a both a thrill and an honor for Mike, but Al's been telling Mike you are doing some incredibly fine playing too, like if I were Mike's teacher listening to him play I'd know he's learnt his lessons well and then some, as evidenced by this one smoking collaborative tune Mike does with Al.
An impressive artist with two albums out the first being Half Pint also a winner of a recording, timeless, well executed, well recorded, compositional and guitar playing artistry.
Great to finally connect with Mike Golay here in Portland,
Maine .
Mike Golay plays a stunning Berkowitz Guitar
The Mics are Studio Projects which the great Rebecca Hall turned me on to ( give her some ears for sure ) and the station purchased for live acoustic performance. They are sweet .
This show can be heard in three parts (MP3)= PART 1 , PART2 , PART3.
One of the pieces Maine Squeeze did was w/ Barb Truex (who has a show on Wednsdays called "Crossfade" on WMPG)
on this beautiful old little banjo ukulele. Barb is found in the loopin' set besides being an active composer, sound designer, & teacher (let's not forget radio host) here in the southern Maine area.

Ed's hundred year old violin, he explained the instrument had significant history related to music and his extended musical family. Ed's playing is remarkably some of the more exquisite I've heard of late . He played on the show with another band and each time he plays he amazes me and apparently his bandmates.

Second time guest on the air on Us Folk Cassidy Holden is
a great bass player and is very active in the Portland, Maine music scene.
Yes Frank Hopkins was today's guest , a great singer-songwriter , multi-instrumentalist, recording engineer , producer, cool guy. We had been volleying emails for close to two years today he finally played on the show. He owns & runs Sweet Dreams Recording Studio here in Portland, Maine. Frank interweaves conscious lyrics into well crafted song structures. He has a new one in the works we heard some of the new (like is two days old, new enough for you?) song that will populate his upcoming disc.
Frank works on a tremendous number of projects and is in a variety of band configurations, today he played solo. We did volley for tuning breaks , playing tracks from the pictured disc.
Frank is part of the new record label comprised of area musicians and most of this latest compilation is streaming on the web check out Cat and Mouse Records .
Janine Blatt in the background, Sally Trice in the foreground.
Sally is my neighbor ( I found out today on the show!)
Janine has a great story about her traveling to Italy
to visit (several times apparently) Castelfidardo, known as
the accordion making capitol of the world.
She was visiting a shop there and handed the gentleman,
accordion maker/ proprietor a card, which had a picture of
(the band) "Maine Squeeze" also upon which included
in the image was Sally's acordion (an IORIO ) (on the card)
( which Sally got via a yard sale ,, yup it's true) and in an instant
the man's eyes light up, he points ecstatically at the image and says in
his broken english "I make , I make, I make",, pointing to Sally's accordion!
Certainly an interesting moment for Janine to convey to Sally,
the group and to today's listening audience. For more info on Maine Squeeze
Janine and two members; Nancy 3 Hoffman and Peter Blackstone serenaded our guests at our wedding which was their "gift" to us ( I know small world).
Chuck's working on a record and after 22 years of playing he certainly has the chops to lay down some great playing . Some audio samples and bio HERE Chuck Muldoon was raised right here in Portland, Maine , he left for several spells but returned seven years ago and has continued to play. His playing style is reminiscent of Paul Geremia, & of Roy Bookbinder (both who have played on Us Folk btw), w/ a dash of Chet Atkins thrown in, 'ceptin' , of course, Chuck doesn't sing , he can playsome good though.
Anna plays a very sweet Taylor guitar, and rather well at that.
I love these perspective shots, totally on the fly, totally blind.
Anna Freitas is a trooper showing up in a snow storm to play on the show. She has been developing a Portland audience over the last few years Anna's here

We were lucky since it was a school vacation Zach could make it in on a weekday. WHAT a great talent on the violin!
He plays locally on the weekends and March 9th info HERE . He is wildly expressive and without a doubt a virtuoso on the instrument!

A Studio Projects mic in the foreground (C3) captured this singer's incredibly fine vocals of native Portlander Heather Caston rather well, she was on the show today plugging her NEW (this month) release "Again" She has an incredibly fine song on her site ( So long ) from it (with Bowed bass & Guitar no less!) certainly worth a visit to her site HERE She had the help of some (humble) local heavyweights in the music business , People like Fraser Jones & Bob Ludwig who all rallied around this artist and the new album .
Heather has a CD release 1st Feb right here in Portland town.
Don Campbell flew up from Nashville to play this gig (the reunion concert) and picked up a few other dates. Don says "I wouldn't miss this one for anything."
Don came up in Portland /Southern Maine area and regularly does fundraising gigs where he performs for no fee to help raise funds for great causes in amongst his touring with his very successful band out of Nashville.
It's always great to see a local guy do well and generously give back to his community. He's got several new albums in the works and a body of past projects worthy of eartime.
Don Was voted most popular singer-songwriter in the local Portland Press Herald poll. It's no wonder there are few who really give back to the communities he resides in like Don Campbell, you should catch him with his band some time he tours all over the country!

Don Campbell & two thirds of The Dave Rowe Trio switched off backing each other . The reunion concert is more like a family reunion for both all the artists like these guys and all the fans who have attended for the last 28 years. Money raised goes to needy individuals that may have fallen thru the cracks of the normal social service channels . Plus it's graet to catch-up andd PLAY !

Ed Howe is a very gifted player who started young, blew everyone's socks off and continues to play the violin with an adept touch . He's been a member of the the Dave Rowe Trio for about two years and sits in or is a member of several other bands in Maine.
between the reflections behind me and the bright daylight coming in the performance space can barely make out a busy bass player but he's there and sounds great.
We were delighted to have Hot Club of Portland member Zack Ovington make it on to the show he is an amazing instrumentalist here plucking the violin and getting into it. this trio is mighty talented > Zack also sings a lot of old swing tunes, & I hear does some justice on the guitar as well. Bryan is seen playing his amazing Gitane guitar.
Steven Bacon likes duct tape, Who doesn't? a true miracle worker,,,that duct tape. Hmmm reminds me of that Joel Mabus tune The Duct Tape Blues
(Once he starts playing no one notices or cares about the case!)
Steven is an Alaskan transplant, now a resident of Portland. He's very active in the local music scene & some very cool projects. His site is HERE He's a member of The Maine Songwriter's Association. He's also involved in some very cool projects recently FAWM (writing, producing &recording 14 songs in the 28 days of February) and RPM Challenge this was Steven's second time on the show, and certainly a local artist to watch.
Backing vocalist (& on the disc keyboards)
This set just the drummer and backing & harmony vocalist
Originally from England, now makes Portland his home.
Bullyclub did a great set today on the show.
New disc is Babbleluck
Jamie did seven songs live we heard two from the album.
One of the cuts was titled "Bobby Orr" which we heard has tapes
of the announcer for the Bruins screaming and Booby Orr scoring. Due to licensing he had to have it okayed by the Bruins and Bobby Orr which he did , even got a note from Booby saying he dug the song which , since Bobby Orr is is all time favorite athlete of all time, he had framed (of course).
Jamie's album Kînd-Lé-Sîd
was one of my faves of the year for his site go here
This Gitane guitar has the smallest soundhole I have ever seen on a guitar, and what a great sounding guitar. Bryan has super serious guitar chops we wre sp lucky to all three of these guys hailing from Portland, Maine. (obviously through the glass)
Hot Club of Portland just played around the one Studio Projects C3 mic.
