The Peoples Outfitters building (also known as the Detroit Commerce Building) is nearly gone. The massive Book Cadillac hotel is undergoing restoration as The Westin Book Cacillac with about 455 hotel rooms and 67 condominiums. Unfortunately due to the need for more parking, the Peoples Outfitters building was deemed expendable.
One half of the side facade of the Book-Cadillac Hotel has been restored to its original pristine whiteness after years of abandonment and decay. The Detroit Commerce building is demolished in the foreground. January 3, 2007.

This 1920's Chicago School Style Building is being demolished to make way for a
parking structure for the restored Book Cadillac Hotel and Residences. The top six levels will contain condos.
Demolition of the 12 story Detroit Commerce Building to make way for Book-Cadillac parking has begun as of November 2006. The Book-Cadillac is the large building behind and to the left of the Commerce Building. The Detroit Commerce Building was completed in 1916 as the Peoples Outfitting Company department store.
