Severn Valley Railway

Walking along the River Taw near Belstone. We were followed by the village cat at that point, it was incredible how far she came with us before turning back.

I caught the cat on video, as well as the rest of our walk at Belstone: youtu.be/7XgS45of6iM

Yesterday, we enjoyed a lovely walk from Sticklepath to Belstone, with the second half of the walk following the river Taw. We even spotted some trout in the crystal clear water.

Another photo from our walk last Saturday which led us following the river Taw for a while. I read that salmon might be spotted in autumn in that river, that sounds very enticing!

On Sunday we explored different sides of an area we visited a lot before near Belstone, in northern Dartmoor. Using Google maps as a guide we spend a wonderful day in a very quiet part of Dartmoor along the River Taw. At home I was delighted to see that this long exposure created a small swirl in the foreground :-)

Near the source of the River Taw, close to Belstone Common on Dartmoor. This little valley with its babbling brook is an oasis of bushes and colour compared to the starker appearance of the actual moorland in Dartmoor National Park.

The low ground between the hills is known as Taw Marsh and is the head of the River Taw flowing north to its estuary close to Barnstaple in North Devon. The shot was taken from the northern flank of Steeperton Tor on Dartmoor and also features the ridge that includes Belstone Tor and Higher Tor.

34027 Taw Valley is a SR West Country Class 4-2-6 'Pacific' designed by Oliver Bulleid, CME of the Southern Railway (SR). Lighter in weight than their sister locomotives, the Merchant Navy class, they could be used on a wide variety of routes including in the south-west of England and the Kent coast. They were a mixed-traffic design, being used for both passenger and freight trains, and were rated 7P6F by British Railways. Originally built with innovative features including air-smoothed casings and chain-driven valve gear, many of the locomotives including 34027 were rebuilt by British Railways in the late 1950s.

Small clumps of gorse bushes dot the rough grassland in the foreground. It seems that it is possible to find some gorse in flower any day of the year and this one was no exception as can be seen close to the bottom left corner in this photo.
