If you’re gonna break down…

…better do it someplace scenic.

Maybe some (most?) of you know there are different kinds of lug nuts but I always assumed that there was generally one size that worked for most wheels. Wrong! I had to buy a spare a few months ago to replace the one that someone had stolen while the truck was parked in front of my house. Discount Tire sold me one that unbeknownst to me required different lug nuts- my Toyota ones were too fat to fit into the grooves. Unfortunately I discovered this when I got a flat on the first day of what was to be a 4-day trip on the White Rim trail in Canyonlands, and just prior to the arrival of a winter storm.

Miraculously 1) this is one of a very few places that gets cell coverage along the rough 100 mile road and 2) there are some rangers willing to go above and beyond what is expected - thank you ranger Devin who tracked down the right lug nuts and extender for my wrench and got a local Moab tire company (Grand tire pros of Moab) to provide (free of charge) an additional spare tire. Devin drove 8 hours round trip to deliver the lug nuts and wrench extender to me. To get a tow truck out was going to be at least $1600! I had to cut the trip short, but was still able to get in a couple of days camping and hiking.
