Science and Engineering Lab East and West Building, University of Illinois Chicago, Halsted Street and Taylor Street, Near West Side, Chicago, IL

Built in 1965, this Brutalist building was designed by Walter Netsch of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill to serve as part of the home of the Science and Engineering Department at the University of Illinois Chicago. The building is clad in brown brick with reveals at the window bays that expose the building’s geometric concrete perimeter columns, a concrete panel roof soffit, ribbon windows around the perimeter of the building’s top floor, a breezeway through the building’s ground floor, and two additions on the south side of the building, which are more responsive to the adjacent street than the original structure. The building is characteristic of the buildings constructed during the first phase of construction at the University of Illinois Chicago East Campus in the mid-1960s.
