Depachika (デパ地下), short for depaato-chika shokuhin uriba (デパート地下食品売り場), literally "department store basement food-selling place", are exactly that--a floor, sometimes multiple floors, in the basements of department stores that sell everything from basic groceries to upscale food stuff.
The Ginza branch of the Nihonbashi-based Mitsukoshi department store chain, opened in 1930, occupies one of the four corners at the centrally located Ginza 4-Chome junction of Chuo and Harumi Dori.
Mitsukoshi, Ltd. (株式会社三越), or Kabushiki-gaisha Mitsukoshi, was founded in 1673 with the yagō (shop name) Echigoya (越後屋), selling kimonos. In 1683, Echigoya set up their first. In 2007, it was announced that Mitsukoshi would merge into Isetan.
