NYC - UES: Frick Collection and Frick Art Reference Library

The Henry Clay and Adelaide Childs Frick House was built by Carrere & Hastings in 1914. The palatial residence of steel magnate Henry Clay Frick, it was built on the entire Fifth Avenue blockfront formerly occupied by the Lenox Library, and planned by Thomas Hastings as both a residence and a gallery for the display of Frick's art collection.

Modeled on 18th century French sources, the house is placed on a terrace setback from Fifth Avenue and surrounded by a retaining wall.

Following the death of Adelaide Frick in 1931, the house was enlarged and converted into a museum by John Russell Pope, who added the entrance pavilion and library, in time to be opened to the public in 1935. The garden was added in 1977.

The Henry Clay and Adelaide Childs Frick House was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1974.
