The current suspension bridge, replacing a flamboyant turn of the century iteration destroyed during World War II, was built between 1961 and 1964 to the design of Pál Sávoly. It is named after Elisabeth of Bavaria, a popular queen and empress of Austria-Hungary, who was assassinated in 1898.
